To ask if you’ve ever become obsessed with a murder case?

I was watching a true crime podcast on YouTube and it finished and went to a random suggestion and it was a 2 minute video of a crime scene inside a subway from the 80s on an ordinary news channel.

I looked into the case and there’s nothing on it apart from a one column blurb in the newspaper at the time and the victims photo being sold on Amazon. It’s so weird .. and I can’t stop thinking about it.

Anyone else?

The murder of Bobbi-Anne McLeod by Cody Ackland. She was a young 18 year old at a bus stop, he was a 24 year old good looking band member who had what looked from the outside to be a great life. He snatched her from the bus stop and murdered her. It didn't appear to be sexually motivated. I just can't fathom why he did it and I think because of their ages, him being in a successful band, it just really shocked me.

Yes I recall this . It stuck in my mind probably for the Same reasons as you. Just vert random, normal guy etc. I'm sure I have seen a podcast about this though which uncovered a sinister side to him? Could be Emma Kenny podcast maybe. I'll try and find it.. *edited- yes it was Emma Kenny on YouTube. Have a look, I think you will find it interesting.

I can't bear that Watts one. What a monster. Why does anyone talk to him? Family must be as mad as he is.
Listening to the Kristen Smart podcast Your Own Backyard was good.
Hadn't heard they caught the Delphi guy. Good.

GlitchStitch · 17/09/2024 00:25

I also find both the Chris Watts and Scott Peterson cases interesting. They are both so similar to me, outwardly mild mannered, almost taciturn. But capable of such brutal violence. And similar behaviour afterwards too, devoid of feelings of grief and guilt.

The murders of Christopher Byers, Stevie Branch & Michael Moore in West Memphis, Arkansas. The discourse between both sides (did the West Memphis 3 do it or was it someone else) is fascinating but the most awful thing was the botched investigation by the state. Then, when it became clear that the WM3 would get a new trial, they arranged legal matters so that no-one else can ever be tried for the crimes. Meaning this case really won't ever be solved.

I have always read up on Jon Bennet Ramsay.

Can this be moved to the True Crime board?

mrsmiawallace3 · 17/09/2024 00:31

Sophie Toscan du Plantier. Read every iota of evidence, and am convinced I
figured it out. Really feel for her poor parents.

Ian Bailey, I suppose?

Oh yes me too. I switch between the family members on who killed her. No one really believes it was anyone outside the family. A very odd case-that ransom note!

Yeah this one, I’m the same age as James so it’s sad to think he’d be my age and what he missed out on.

Would be life long torment to have been one of the people that saw them and stopped them.

I’ve often thought what a difference mobile phones would have made. People who stopped them would have been more likely to ask what’s his mum’s number I’ll call her, or even think I’m calling the police this looks off. With smart phones and the internet it might already have been on newsfeeds and sm that James was missing.

Mumandcarer80 · 17/09/2024 00:56

This wasn't a murder but Charlotte Jones her mum abandoned her in some woods in Warrington. Then reported her missing. The police had a whip round to buy her a Teletubby. Was in 98 I remember as I was pregnant with DS. I just think WTF goes through some parents heads. Often wonder what happened to her.

The only thing I agree they do right in the US is the Amber alert system they have over there. It has been spoken about before.

West Memphis 3. I’d like to believe they were all innocent but lately I’ve been starting think otherwise for at least 2 out of 3. Someone out there knows what happened to those poor boys.

Obsessed, no, but there's one I followed closely in the media having met the victim. Very interesting case anyway, but it felt close to home having interacted with the person, even though it wasn't really anything to do with me personally.

I’m pretty sure one of my former (very short term) colleagues was murdered, several years ago - I saw a very familiar looking woman’s face on the news, and nothing was ever mentioned again, even by other colleagues who might have seen the story. I’m just hoping that meant it wasn’t her, but who knows?

cerebuswannabe · 16/09/2024 20:40

Claudia Lawrence case baffles me. So sad her dad died without knowing what happened to his daughter.

I think the police know what happened and who is responsible- they just don't have enough evidence to prosecute. They sent a file to the CPS and that was the outcome. They need someone to speak up but for whatever reason, no one will.

The new podcast series about the case is interesting. It raises questions not explored before.

Boiledbeetle · 17/09/2024 02:14

My murder obsession is the murder of 83 year old Agnes Cresswell who was bludgeoned to death at some point between 11 and 14 May 1968 in Bradford, West Yorkshire by an 18 year old called Steven Rushworth, (who was already a double convicted rapist by 15).

Unfortunately the National archives won't unlock the file until 1st January 2026! I can find nothing about it apart from a Daily Mirror (I think) article from the time, and I can't even find that now. I know who murdered her (and that he went to prison), but I really want to know the details of the case.

This one is personal for me as I was a victim of his a few years after he was released from prison for the murder and finding more out about what he did before he came into my life will hopefully help me make some sense of, and make peace with what happened in my life.

On a none personal note I read a book Victim: The Other Side of Murder" by Gary Kinder in the mid 80s about a horrific robbery, and murders, at a HiFi shop in 1974. "I've read it countless times over the years and the senseless brutality of what happened never fails to horrify me. Of course I had to wait for the internet to exist before I could find out what happened after the point the book ended. It's such a sad story, but I've never been able to get it out of my mind.

Itisjustmyopinion · 17/09/2024 02:23

To think that Chris Watts and his parents thought they were entitled to the life insurance money was the final nail in their coffins. Disgusting behaviour

For cases like JonBenet and Madeleine it is very likely that the assumed truth is probably very close to the actual truth but we will never know

Have you seen the four-part documentary about it? It is the best crime programme I've ever watched.

Katielovesteatime · 17/09/2024 03:05

I'm obsessed with the Idaho student murders. I am shocked by how many people think Bryan Kohberger is innocent! Can't wait for the trial.

Brown's Chicken Shop Massacre of 1993 - I fell down a rabbit hole and read court and appeal papers ... I don't think they got the right people.

That's just at the moment!

DreamTheMoors · 17/09/2024 03:40

I can’t say I was obsessed, but it sure captured my attention.
The Laci Peterson murder case made US national headlines and it happened very close to where I live.
It was tragic and terrible and awful.
And her murderer-husband has been back in the news recently because the L.A. Innocence Project has taken up his cause. It’s hogwash.
The above innocence project is not related to the national innocence project, btw, and their “evidence” is shaky and crap and was, I believe, disproven years ago.

Imagine him getting love letters in prison.
Sickening. People are warped.

Yes this one. Still think the original three were guilty. But who knows?

JonBenet too.

FoleyHuck · 17/09/2024 03:49

I'm fascinated by true crime and the Anni Dewani case particularly horrified and captured me (the honeymoon couple in South Africa who were 'hijacked' after a meal out). I followed it closely at the time in 2010, having been to South Africa & some of the same places the previous year.

I met my (now) Husband in 2019 and after some months of dating in a conversation about crimes and murders he dropped in that he'd gone to school with someone who'd been murdered in a high profile case. He went to school with Annie Dewani & knows her family. His Dad attended the trial in a professional capacity Shock

Yes I am completely obssessed with the case of the murder of Dan Markel, a law professor, in Florida. His ex wife's family ordered a hit on him and the machinations of the case are just fascinating.

Agree. That was a weird one.

Yes, I listened to the podcast on this. So weird! She/her family murdered him because he made her move from one part of Florida to another!

XChrome · 17/09/2024 04:22

An eerie disappearance and death that is most likely a murder- Madison Scott. The story of how she disappeared from a campsite without a trace or any clues left behind made every hair on my body stand up. Last year they found the body after 12 years of searching.
