And Keir Starmer should have paid himself for his 'several pairs of glasses' and £19K worth of work clothes? On top of that there was £20K for accommodation for Sir Keir and another 'similar sum' on 'private office' costs.

Purely by coincidence, it seems the donor was given a Downing Street security pass allowing easy access to the corridors of power without any role in government.

And yes, Carrie and Boris Johnson should have paid for their wallpaper and hampers too, that is just as sleazy.

Sir Keir Starmer faces investigation over possible breach of parliamentary rules after Labour donor 'pays for wife's clothes'

A Labour peer paid for a personal shopper, clothes and alterations for Lady Starmer, both before and after the Labour leader became prime minister in July, according to The Sunday Times. But Labour said they have contacted authorities over the matter.

They're all dirty little piglets with their noses in the trough.

Remember this when we're all paying £300 a month council tax, the health service is fully privatised and they tax us for setting foot out of the front door.

I’m already paying £310 and have been 300 plus for years - Scotland has it bad!

This was Starmer's response to the Boris Johnson wallpaper scandal. He called it 'major sleaze'. Starmer was absolutely correct.

The irony. Starmer is clearly a major sleaze too.

Yes I agree.

Rayner did everything properly, so can't really be singled out for criticism.

Starmer fucked up by not declaring the donation. He has handed his opponents a massive stick to beat him with and has put his wife into the firing line too. I feel a bit sorry for her.

His wife could have said no thanks. Surely she can pick out and pay for her clothing?

In fairness, Farage’s party have put in their ‘contract with the people’ that they would raise the tax free allowance to around £20,000. I’m assuming that would put money into the pockets of the people. They do want to cancel the short-term climate goals so we stop impoverishing the country. I’d quite like to see a bit more of my money and have a bit more put into the British Economy.

However, I imagine that just like the Tories and Labour, Farage and Reform would likely show themselves to be just like every other self-serving politician and be a huge disappointment to their voters. But right now we don’t know and I can see why plenty of voters will be turning to them in desperation.

Edited

I didn’t know Farage had promised this. I don’t think people on £20k or under should pay tax. I’d be willing to pay more so those on so little have a better life.

Unpopular opinion but I think they are actually paid pretty poorly considering the job responsibilities.

If you add their take home pay to their paid expenses, housing, utility, whatever allowance, then it's a handsome amount. They're essentially being given 'pocket money' while everything else is paid for. They're paid more than enough considering how the people they're "serving" are doing.

artsperson · 16/09/2024 19:52

For a PM and his spouse to accept money for clothes etc from a wealthy donor is to appear greedy and bereft of political intelligence. It looks awful and doesn't pass the smell test. It's pathetic. Buy your suits from M&S but have some dignity for heavens sake.

Papyrophile · 16/09/2024 20:31

Politically, my opinions are well to the right of Angela Rayner, but I can applaud her determination to climb to success in life. I still don't agree with her opinions. But I absolutely respect her achievements.

I can’t stress enough how wrong you are, I rarely say that, but you are wrong and it’s dangerous,

People were not posting “meet at 7pm to join the riot at the mosque, bring your bats” they were posting about their unhappiness at the level of immigration from Muslim countries into this country. And to say that isn’t allowed is staggering,

It is an opinion.

They were inciting violence - which is a criminal offence. Here’s one.

mass deportation now, set fire to all the f hotels full of the bas*** for all I care... If that makes me racist, so be it.

I don't think backdoor puppetry in the guise of gift-giving is a 'nothing story'. People seem to be conveniently ignoring that part. That smells like corruption and bribery but of course, "it's a gift" so no one can say/prove anything.

Well how come they can accept that but civil service admin can't accept a couple of bottles of wine and a few chocolates at Christmas then?

Well maybe, as in it’s a possibility he’s a lifelong Labour supporter doing all he can to ensure the party he supports won the election. He used to own The Octonauts. And ASOS, which could explain his interest in clothes.

He did declare the donation, but declared it late. The Times article said that Starmers wife has turned down all offers from top designers for free clothes, jewellery and cosmetics. The dresses she wore election week sold out in days.

”The dresses she wore election week sold out in days.” Do you think this justifies taking freebies (what would be considered bribes in the corporate world)? This Government is cutting fuel subsidies to pensioners and imposing VAT on private education. Yet they take clothing and other non essential items from donors. It’s not justifiable.

Late as in Starmer having a go at Johnson for missing the deadline?

Some clip online of him talking about how serious that is

Johnson didn't declare the donation for the wallpaper. The Tory Party got fined by the Electoral Commission over it and his ethics advisor resigned.

And what does late mean for Starmer?

Gilmour15 · 16/09/2024 22:34

It means that he won't be investigated for declaring a few weeks late.

No, you are wrong. People have not been jailed for posting about their opinions about the level of immigration from Muslim countries. They have been jailed for calling for riots and murder. Reports are easily accessible on the internet about what those who got jail sentences for incitement said. 'Blow the mosque up with the adults in it'; 'Riot in Huddersfield. Meet at the train station at 1pm. It's not going to be peaceful'; 'Every man his dog should be smashing f--- out of the hotel'; 'Set fire to all the f-king hotels full of the b*stards.' These are calls for violence.
