to believe Lady Starmer should pay for her own clothes and personal stylists?

And Keir Starmer should have paid himself for his 'several pairs of glasses' and £19K worth of work clothes? On top of that there was £20K for accommodation for Sir Keir and another 'similar sum' on 'private office' costs.

Purely by coincidence, it seems the donor was given a Downing Street security pass allowing easy access to the corridors of power without any role in government.

And yes, Carrie and Boris Johnson should have paid for their wallpaper and hampers too, that is just as sleazy.

Sir Keir Starmer faces investigation over possible breach of parliamentary rules after Labour donor 'pays for wife's clothes'

A Labour peer paid for a personal shopper, clothes and alterations for Lady Starmer, both before and after the Labour leader became prime minister in July, according to The Sunday Times. But Labour said they have contacted authorities over the matter.

in the space of a few weeks he’s imprisoned people for opinions on social media

Inciting riot, you mean, not “opinions on social media”.

Araminta1003 · 16/09/2024 14:44

I don’t think they had a choice and had to use strong deterrent to lock up and put people off rioting, it was out of control, not fair on the police and was horrible for anyone living in those places.

However, I am not so naive as to believe some of those people were just stupid and disappointed by the football not coming home!

Longleggedgiraffe · 16/09/2024 14:45

Is the Taxpayer paying for her dresses? No. So there shouldn't be any need for anyone to get their panties in a wad over this. Save your energies to fight against the damage Labour have inflicted on pensioners instead. That is, taking money from the needy to give to those who are already earning over £80k a year.
Pick your battles otherwise you'll have no energy left when you do need to fight something really worth while.

Buildingthefuture · 16/09/2024 14:48

Does anyone know if they pay tax on “donations” they receive??

CocoapuffPuff · 16/09/2024 14:55

Can't she afford her own frocks?
Of course, frocks for rich people are far more important than heating for elderly people. I mean, my elderly mother in law is worried already about affording her gas bill this winter, but as long as Starmer's got his new snazzy suits and his missus is dressed to the nines.....

So imprisoning people literally for words becomes acceptable?

it is communism 101 and the world is rightly concerned about this government. A big over reach.

They say these words were inciting riots, but if you take a cold hard look at the actual words people have been imprisoned for, they are unpalatable opinions.

p.s. Hew Edwards not in prison

nOasistickets · 16/09/2024 14:59

The mistake people made was to this KS was different... he's not.

urbanbuddha · 16/09/2024 15:02

Yes, when the words are used to incite riot. Words are literally the only way you can incite riot.

I wish he would move as swift on locking up those who commit rape and sexual assault as a strong deterrent to put these attackers off. That would be a good message to send.

Instead, they are seeing criminals including sex pests and domestic violence aggressors spraying champagne and celebrating with smoking spliffs as he lets them lose early.

Beggars belief.

Ted27 · 16/09/2024 16:44

You do realise that he is not personally responsible for sentencing anyone. As far as I understand it all sentencing with regard to the riots is within existing guidelines.
As will Huw Edwards who obviously could pay for a legal team which clearly did a great job. For him that is. Not sufficient in my opinion

Yes, when the words are used to incite riot. Words are literally the only way you can incite riot.

I can’t stress enough how wrong you are, I rarely say that, but you are wrong and it’s dangerous,

People were not posting “meet at 7pm to join the riot at the mosque, bring your bats” they were posting about their unhappiness at the level of immigration from Muslim countries into this country. And to say that isn’t allowed is staggering,

It is an opinion.

I am 79. My pension is about £300 per month as we cashed in Ni or whatever it was when young and very broke. I’ve always been a saver . I have dreadful eyesight and my glasses last year cost me £500 + . I paid for them myself not on a credit card because I am a saver ,brought up that way . Actually not true I used a credit card to gain points and then paid off immediately. My clothes are often ancient yet I’ve been greeted as someone who has been the smartest there. I buy expensive classic clothes . I’m stunned that Keir Starmer cannot pay for his own glasses and his wife on £50k pa cannot dress herself . I will no longer vote Labour

Or the people carrying machetes or zombie knives. Although, I think we’re going to pay them instead 🤦‍♀️
You couldn’t write it.

Surely you’re eligible for pension credit? You’d get help with your glasses as well if you claim it.

I seem to remember some posters repeating that Labour would have VAWG pre GE

Might be going the way of some of their other promises...

DroopyEyelids · 16/09/2024 18:13

Unpopular opinion but I think they are actually paid pretty poorly considering the job responsibilities.

Gilmour15 · 16/09/2024 18:20

Rummly · 15/09/2024 11:31

No, that’s a more substantial angle on it. It’s tied up with the concerns over crony appointments (which I think is probably more serious in fact, since some, maybe many, are civil service appointments rather than arms-length quango or agency positions).

The facts of Lord Alli’s pass, as I understand them, are fairly minor in time and nature. But, yes, I agree that that part of the story tells us rather more about the conduct and instincts of this government.

Hasn't he been a Labour peer for over 20 years?

Arguably but all their main expenses, housing, energy are also paid for so there is a lot of disposable income. Tony Blair is no estimated to have a personal fortune of between £45m to £60m. It sets you up to be incredibly wealthy for life. Boris Johnson pleaded poverty as PM and now has a net worth of £2m although he bought a house for £4m with no mortgage so it is all very shady.

Gilmour15 · 16/09/2024 18:20

Probably. But why is that relevant?

AuntieJoyce · 16/09/2024 18:28

urbanbuddha · 16/09/2024 11:47

Well, yes, if he’s in the habit of renting his apartment out for more than that, but if it’s his bolt hole in Manhattan she’s just covering costs and any staff surely?

The point is though I can’t think of any other occupation where it would be acceptable to receive this. It may be several years since my Bribery Act training but this would’ve been way out of acceptable limits even at £1,250.

At one point visiting representatives were bringing their own sandwiches for lunch FGS

Pelsall116 · 16/09/2024 18:45

Surely he earns enough to afford his wife some decent clobber. He was quick to call out Boris Johnson over the wallpaper scandal, rightly branding it as sleaze, but quite happy to have his own snout in the trough in return for favours; The word hypocrite comes to mind
....and people wonder why there is such political apathy and a low turnout at elections.............

urbanbuddha · 16/09/2024 18:53

@AuntieJoyce

Yes, actually, I think you might right.
I was caught up in the numbers when I posted.
It’s difficult to know precisely. Lord Alli’s been a member of the House of Lords for over 25 years. Are they friends? Then again would you value a friend’s generosity to a certain amount if they let you stay in their gaff in New York? Maybe, to be on the safe side.

And of course the right do like to hunt down Angela Rayner in particular. She seems to offend a certain sensibility of theirs.

Transparency, that’s what we need. Transparency.

Blackbirdsinthgarden · 16/09/2024 19:02

Just rent the clothes . . . My opinion of politicians doesn’t depend on their sartorial elegance but how they perform as elected members. Lammy’s justification was laughable. Didn’t Carrie Johnson rent her wedding dress? I may be wrong though.

If I had to attend a high profile event (extremely unlikely) I would rent a nice little number. I wouldn’t look as good as Lady S. but at least I would fit in and look the part.
