AIBU to think that I might be a bit young for a 'winter sun' holiday?

Lighthearted: My parents want DH and me to come with them on a week's 'winter sun' holiday in December in Spain. DH thinks it would be nice, but I can't really imagine it and view these kinds of holidays as kind of a retiree thing. The weather won't be hot enough (22 degrees ish) to do much swimming/water activities, and I'm not really sure what I would do all week. We're in our late 20s. AIBU to think we're a bit young for this?

Yes too young.

It wouldn't be so bad if it were hot enough to sunbathe but those holidays are targetted at the elderly who need to get away from the cold in the UK.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/09/2024 19:28

Interesting point!

I guess when young people do winter Sun, they go somewhere further than Spain, so hotter and sunnier.

Spain in winter would be somewhere I’d go for a city break and sightseeing rather than just sitting about. Is that an option?

EffortlesslyInelegant · 12/09/2024 19:28

YABU. You are never too young or too old to travel. And 22 degrees is 21 warmer than it will be here.

PinkyFlamingo · 12/09/2024 19:29

I would go, 22 degrees will be a lot hotter than it will be here in Scotland!

Parkmybentley · 12/09/2024 19:30

Sheesh, it's cheaper and still warm! I'd love to do one of those and I'm 30s!

MevsDHoliday · 12/09/2024 19:31

Just to add, they wouldn't be paying so it's not a free break - it would be the same price as going elsewhere or going somewhere without them.

Why would you be too young? When I've been on 'winter sun' holidays it's been to go rock climbing, because it's far too hot to go climbing in those countries in the summer.

If you're an active/sporty person, lots of activities will be similar - trail running, cycling, tennis etc. are all much more doable when it isn't so hot.

TheChosenTwo · 12/09/2024 19:38

I don’t think it’s an age thing, I just think if I was going away in December for some winter sun I’d go somewhere much hotter than Spain because I love being hot!
My friend refuses to go to Spain from about May to October as she finds it too hot, she’s only 30 but just isn’t a fan of it being too hot as she says she hates sweating and melting and prefers it cooler so she can get about and go sightseeing more comfortably.
if you don’t want to go, just say no thanks!
I can’t wait until my youngest is a bit older and I don’t have to ration my leave predominantly over school holidays so dh and I can fuck off in Jan/feb somewhere really hot, I adore winter sun and would never choose myself to go away in August.

Kelly51 · 12/09/2024 19:45

Depends where they go,is hotel aimed at over 70s, over 80s?
My DP and I often go to the Canaries with various adult DC anytime from Nov-Feb and it's a huge mix of age ranges, young groups, families etc
Btw we're 50, we think we're young!!

Yeah, I don't actually mind going away in winter. I just associate winter sun and Spain with retirees fleeing the cold weather. If they'd suggested we go to Mexico or Iceland or something I wouldn't have as many reservations. Of course we can just not go, I'm not being all too serious with my question. It's just that I have this image in my head and wondered if I was the only one. They go all the time, same place. That doesn't help 😅

We went away last December for dh’s birthday he was 50. We had a lovely relaxing week in the sunshine ! We had a great time and certainly not just for retired people. There were people of all ages there.

we even got 4 days of sunbathing which was great.

we loved it that much we are going this December too, it really sets you up for the cold dark winter.

Notreat · 12/09/2024 19:51

I don't understand the concept of being too young to travel . There is a lot more to do in Spain than sunbathe and ilthe weather will be a lot warmer than in the UK

WhatNoRaisins · 12/09/2024 19:51

Personally I think winter sun holidays can be a great chance for sightseeing or more active holidays to places where the summer climate would be too hot.

HelenWheels · 12/09/2024 19:55

22 degrees is nice

Beth216 · 12/09/2024 19:56

It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, it sounds like you don't want to go. And as it's going to be your money and you're time off why waste it on something you don't really want?

sunshineandshowers40 · 12/09/2024 19:57

I think this is more of a weather thing than it is about age. If I was going away in winter I would want somewhere warmer than 22 degrees.

sangriaandsunshineplease · 12/09/2024 19:57

A friend and I went to her parents' holiday home in Spain the January after we graduated as flights were dirt cheap and we could stay there for free. It was only 21/22 degrees but it was still amazing to see sun and feel warm. We were on the beach in T shirt and shorts rather than bikini but it still good

PCController2 · 12/09/2024 19:58

Not too young at all. Weather should be nicer than in the UK and you can do all sorts of exploring type things. Masses of things to do in Spain other than sit on a chilly beach.

Xmasbaby11 · 12/09/2024 19:58

I like going to cities in the winter, sightseeing kind of holidays - I probably wouldn't choose this kind of holiday unless I needed to really relax and/or wanted to spend a lot of time with whoever's going. Totally personal - go if you think you'd enjoy it!

FloatyBoaty · 12/09/2024 20:01

Fine not to want to go. Bit batty to think Spain is only for young people in the summer? I went to Valencia in November when I was 24 and living a fully debauched lifestyle, and had one of the best minibreaks I’ve ever been on.

Bjorkdidit · 12/09/2024 20:01

Where in Spain? 22 C will be lovely and you'll be able to go hiking, museums, white villages, eat tapas in pavement cafes etc.

We're going hiking in the mountains inland from Malaga in November and I can't wait.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 12/09/2024 20:01

I went in my first winter sun break with my pals when I was 18 and have done so since frequently.

I didn't realise I was breaking some kind of age rule. 😳

What age do you have to be and who decides?

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 12/09/2024 20:04

Where in Spain? Benidorm/fuengirola no thanks, Málaga/Madrid yes please! I don't like to just lay around on holiday so if the weather is in the twenties that's pleasant t-shirt weather and nice for walking around. I only just turned 40 but I've been going on winter holidays all of my adult life

EsmeSusanOgg · 12/09/2024 20:06

I remember an amazing holiday with my mum in my early 20s to Spain in February. We had an amazing time. Good food, lots of interesting cities to see. Nicer weather than the UK. Also, cheap as chips! I'm not one for sunbathing though.

This.

I don't sunbathing so I'd do some sightseeing, eat some good food, have some wine and maybe do some reading while sitting on a balcony or under an umbrella by the pool.
