AIBU to think that I might be a bit young for a 'winter sun' holiday?

Lighthearted: My parents want DH and me to come with them on a week's 'winter sun' holiday in December in Spain. DH thinks it would be nice, but I can't really imagine it and view these kinds of holidays as kind of a retiree thing. The weather won't be hot enough (22 degrees ish) to do much swimming/water activities, and I'm not really sure what I would do all week. We're in our late 20s. AIBU to think we're a bit young for this?

I would go because even at 22 degrees it would be three times as warm as it will be here. And you can turn your central heating off for a week, which probably almost pays for the week away 🙂 DP and I accidentally ended up in Portugal in a hotel which was hosting a "seniors " break, they were all really good fun.

Young people actually live in Spain and dont stop going out/partying in the wimter months just like they don't here ...

I agree that 22 degrees is a lovely temperature, but it makes no sense to say that it's "three times as warm" as it would be in the UK (which would presumably be 5-6 degrees C).

That implies that 0 degrees celsius (which is just one of the scales which we can use to measure temperature) equates to no/zero "warmth". Which isn't true.

St Lucia isn't Benidorm 😆

Old Benidorm is actually quite nice. It’s also a lovely area and Alicante is a lovely city

tiltingatwindmillsagain · 13/09/2024 08:00

I didn’t think sunbathing was such a big thing anymore. Skin cancer and all that.

FrenchandSaunders · 13/09/2024 08:06

I love spain in the winter. 22 is warm enough to swim. The thought of wearing shorts and t shirts and sitting outside bars and restaurants whilst it’s feeezing in the UK is amazing.

Why would you be too young? When I've been on 'winter sun' holidays it's been to go rock climbing, because it's far too hot to go climbing in those countries in the summer.

If you're an active/sporty person, lots of activities will be similar - trail running, cycling, tennis etc. are all much more doable when it isn't so hot.

This. Quite sad that you can't think of things to do that don't involve sitting still and frying your skin. Also quite sad that you assume all' old ' people just sit around being dull.

Chrsytalchondalier · 13/09/2024 08:45

Wow I've always done winter sun holidays as soon as I could afford it! I hate the winter! My DH is the same, we always escape in winter to somewhere hot.

WithIcePlease · 13/09/2024 08:52

I've been going on winter sun holidays since I met DH at 23.
It's simply joyous walking about in sleeveless dresses when it's so cold in the UK.
Sometimes, it's hot enough for proper sunbathing but if not, we go walking or sightseeing. Plenty of folk on cycling holidays at this time of year too.
Even in a beach resort, you can often walk for miles. I've done the best part of 20 kilometres on some days on these holidays.

Feelingstrange2 · 13/09/2024 08:56

Depends where you go.

We've been away to places like Spain, Madeira and the Canaries over winter. But we've explored on foot as the weather is better for that. We've rarely swum except in heated pools and on Christmas Day on Fuertaventura because I wanted to say I had! Actually the sea wasn't too bad once I was in and we stayed in an hour or so and had a lovely time.

But if you like sunbathing, whole beach days and swimming in hotel pools. Nah, not really.

CuttySarcasm · 13/09/2024 08:58

Spain isn't guaranteed 20 in winter I've been before and it's been 12 degrees! Even in May when we went it was regularly 16/17 degrees and jumper weather. Just to manage expectations. For winter sun you need to go further a field.

JLT24 · 13/09/2024 09:04

I have literally never linked going on holiday in the winter with being old. Myself and my DH have been going abroad all year round since we were in our early 20’s!

22 degrees is warm enough to sit out and relax - read a book/listen to music etc just what we’d normally do in even hotter weather but may wear shorts and t shirt instead of just swimwear! It’s also a lovely weather to sit out and have meals/drinks!

It’s also a good opportunity to do more sightseeing, boats trips, nice walks, cycling, shopping, trips to the local markets etc!!

CeeJay81 · 13/09/2024 09:09

We are off to Tenerife in December. It looks like itll be around 22 degrees, maybe a bit warmer if we are lucky. There's plenty to do besides sun bathing in Spain.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 13/09/2024 09:17

I mean, if you don't want to go, don't go, but an ex and I went to Lanzarote one winter and it was lovely.

tiltingatwindmillsagain · 13/09/2024 08:00

I didn’t think sunbathing was such a big thing anymore. Skin cancer and all that.

You'd be surprised - I'm really careful with my skin and still find people think I'm "weird" because I don't want to lie outside and cook myself any time the sun comes out.

I think a lot of people really don't take skin cancer seriously.

Luio · 13/09/2024 09:23

You are clearly too youthful and sophisticated for a Spanish resort in winter, so don’t go.

Remaker · 13/09/2024 09:24

Back when we were dating DH and his best mate went to Lanzarote at New Year. They were in their late 20s and it was them and the old folks. DH had a great time and won the mahjong tournament lol.

GerundTheBehemoth · 13/09/2024 09:24

My last trip to Spain was a few years ago in January. Flew to Malaga and then on to Sierra du Andujar to look for Iberian lynxes. Daytime temps were v pleasant!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/09/2024 09:26

The only one we ever went on was to a Caribbean destination, for a Feb. Big Birthday of mine, where we’d previously been in summer and early autumn.

It was very different - mostly well-heeled retired, rather than families, who were there for 3 weeks or more - some told us they went every year.

And the sea was definitely cooler and less calm than in summer, plus the air temp., while still very warm, was cooler than in summer/autumn.

Of course we enjoyed it, but I wouldn’t choose to go during the depths of winter again.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 13/09/2024 09:26

I've never done this type of holiday, but I love autumn and winter, and wouldn't want to miss it here in the UK. I'm 60.

I also don't like beaches and sunbathing. Would be a waste of money! Am partial to a city break, though.

doodleschnoodle · 13/09/2024 09:27

Go and hire a car and then you can go and do whatever you like!

HerVagestyTheQueef · 13/09/2024 09:28

DH and I often go to Mallorca in winter. We mostly go to walk in the mountains, but we also cycle and visit nice little towns, etc. Too hot for hiking and cycling in summer.
I also swim in the sea, but I do that year round here, too!
You also get a better standard of fellow tourist out of season 😁

Go if you want and not if you don’t, OP, but it really has nothing to do with age.

MumonabikeE5 · 13/09/2024 09:28

There’s more to Spain than sunshine and swimming. Winter breaks are good for exploring and visiting places.

I went to Barcelona one December and it snowed!

I certainly wouldn't choose Spain for 'winter sun'!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 13/09/2024 09:32

22 degrees is perfect for me.

We did a canaries cruise last January and I definitely sunbathed as well as did some sightseeing in the warmth. Went in the sea in Gran Canaria, it was lovely.

I’m 50, DH in his 60’s so we probably are old according to some but there were people of all ages on our cruise. We are doing it again for 2 weeks next January😎
