My wee has had an unpleasant odour for the past few days, on and off, when I haven't drunk as much water. No other symptoms.

I'd be concerned about a UTI, but I literally have zero other symptoms. And it's not everytime. Generally just first thing in the morning, or I've been slow to drink water that day. When I stay hydrated and my pee is clear, it smells fine.

Should I be worried? Only concerned because usually even when dehydrated, there's no odour.

Could you be pregnant? This was the first thing I noticed, before I took at test.

FairTurtle · 12/09/2024 10:17

@FruitBadger Ahh no chance of that at all (sadly!).

Drink more water, mine is the same - coffee is worst for it. Should be a simple fix.

FairTurtle · 12/09/2024 10:20

@bazoom Yeah, drinking more water does actually seem to fix it (I never drink coffee), but it's just strange as it's a new thing and never normally happens.

Just drink more water

Mindymomo · 12/09/2024 10:28

I had a UTI a couple of weeks ago, my symptoms were pain when weeing, tummy pain, cloudy and smelly wee and finally a tiny amount of blood in wee, which is when I thought I have have a UTI. I got some testing strips which showed a UTI infection and then got 3 days of treatment. I must admit I drink 5 cups of tea a day, a Diet Coke and a coffee plus 2 glasses of water. We now leave a glass by the kitchen sink, so both DH and I drink water every time we go in the kitchen.

Ok - for me that is more unusual that it doesn't normally smell when dehydrated... I would say it is pretty normal in the morning and also when you don't drink enough for it to stink a bit🙂
keep an eye on it and see if it changes.

BMW6 · 12/09/2024 10:45

Isn't that perfectly normal when you are not as hydrated as you should be? Pee darker and stronger smelling as more concentrated?

Easy to fix. Drink more water!

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 12/09/2024 10:48

Are you well hydrated? Have you changed any medication or eaten asparagus?
I frightened myself by thinking I had blood in my urine this morning until DH pointed out that I'd eaten pickled beetroot last night!

Pippifer · 12/09/2024 10:51

Possibly just dehydrated - but I will say I once had a UTI that lingered after I thought it had cleared up and the only symptom was my first wee in the morning was really smelly. The usual antibiotics got rid very quickly.

FairTurtle · 12/09/2024 10:51

I guess it is normal for it to smell a bit stronger when dehydrated, but this odour I'm having is more like ammonia, like when you eat asparagus (I haven't!). Hence my concern.

If its brown & smells like sugar puffs I think that's fairly normal first thing in the morning as you're slightly dehydrated when you wake up. Just drink more water.

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 12/09/2024 12:11

You can get test sticks for wee infection from Amazon I think - or your local chemist

BeachRide · 12/09/2024 12:11

Diabetes?

ShaneFulorgy · 12/09/2024 12:42

Have you been eating a lot of asparagus, meat, garlic or UPF's lately OP? I've heard that those make a difference to your piss odour.

Oh hmm, maybe I didn't mean ammonia then. It's like the smell of when you eat asparagus!

Smell can be the only symptom of UTI in my experience.

BMW6 · 13/09/2024 15:19

According to Google if your pee smells like asparagus then it could be indicative of liver problems.
