Pregnant dog

AIBU? So my partner came home last night and told me he thinks the dog is pregnant (by another dog from his work that I thought was neutered) I was absolutely livid and told him I am not having a litter of puppies at home because he is at work all day and I will be the one looking after them. We had a massive row over it and I get told I'm selfish.

So the reasons I don't want to are, she's a big dog and likely to have a big litter, I have a 6 month old baby and am pregnant, I've just spent the last 3 years overcoming psychosis and getting my mental health back on track and I feel this would be a massive trigger for me.

He's saying I wouldn't have to do anything as the mum would but I just don't think that's true. Please tell me if I'm in the wrong? It's like he's done it on purpose

The dog should have been spayed before now if you don’t want puppies, and you don’t want to risk pyometra, which she could die from.
You can get her spayed now and it will end the whole problem.

Edited

This.

just a word of warning OP - the pups may be classed as banned. Not all being banned are just XL bullys, some cane corso cross are being seen as "of type"

so he also may be breeding banned dogs - clearly he has done this intentionally.

I feel sorry for you OP but you have to just look after yourself now and your kids

HateSpewingTurnip · 12/09/2024 16:25

Op XL bullies would somehow get shoehorned into a thread about a pregnant chihuahua 🤣

I neither wrote the laws, not will comment on my thoughts about them. I will, however, promise you that I would not raise the concern of XL bully typing on a thread about chihuahua breeding though.

This is not a thread about potential chihuahua cross puppies though. We're actually trying help the OP to see the full picture and implications.

They really aren't!

OP I'm so sorry you're being put through the wringer, your husband is an arse and it's awful for your poor dog too. Ddb x cc pups are going to be huge! Finding responsible homes for them will be so stressful 😪

On December 31, 2023, the United Kingdom and Wales implemented a ban on all Xl bully breeds of dogs under the name “The Dangerous Dog Act.” Dogs affected by this act include the American Bulldog, Olde English Bulldogge, Cane Corso, the American Staffordshire Terrier and any other breed of dog crossed with a Pit Bull ...2 Feb 2024

@OrwellianTimes Cane Corso not a banned breed... how many times do people have to go through this?

The legislation determines if a dog is of an illegal type (pitbull or xl bully) by a set of measurements, features and appearance.
Much is down to personal opinion and is subjective.

A nicely bred FCI reg Cane Corso is unlikely to be found to be an illegal type. This is because the FCI registration means the dogs pedigree is verifiable, the dog can be traced back through its ancestors. (our uk KC don't recognise the Cane Corso, not because it isn't a pedigree breed, but because there aren't enough in the UK and not enough requests to add it to the import register yet).

Our government (well the last lot) made it quite clear that dogs with verifiable genuine paperwork proving they are a particular breed, won't be considered 'type' and therefore won't be illegal.

A back yard bred un-registered or registered with one of the spurious 'cash for a certificate' registration organisations (anyone can set up a registration club!!) might well be considered 'type', anyone can say their dog is xyz breed.

Google says they are banned?

Although this website seems to have an agenda.

That does come up as the first result on google but it is incorrect - was discussed at some length earlier on the thread

Several PP posted the actual government guidelines [?Page 5] which confirm OP's dog is not illegal

The UK Government does not have that Cane Corsa or, for that matter, the English Bulldog, on its list of banned breeds. Are you suggesting that the information on the Government's web site is inaccurate?

Although, I think a source that refers to English Bulldogs as "Olde English Bulldogge" is probably not reliable!

Just an update I asked him to leave last night and gave him the ultimatum. I think he was banking on me changing my mind and helping with the puppies but when he realised I was serious and becoming a single mum and leaving the relationship he said he would call the vets today when they open (which he has done) and get her booked in for a termination and spay.
Thank you all so so much for the advise. Thank you also for the snarky judgemental comments you've just made me realise they truly are some nasty people in this group and I hope you never find your self in an in asked for shit situation!

Well done for holding firm. You've done the right thing and let's hope your partner learned his lesson.

Are you planning to stay with him? After the way he tried to manipulate you?

leighks123 · 13/09/2024 09:14

@TheRavenSaid this is a decision I really need to think about long term. I just wanted this shit show of a situation sorted first. I've definitely seen him in a whole new light after this

I don’t see what that’s got to do with it. DH and I were married within 3 months of getting together and had our first DS 12 months later. We’ve been together 26 years now!

We've just raised a litter of puppies. We absolutely did have to do "anything" with them. We did a lot even though the mother dog was excellent.

There was the daily weighing (twice daily for the first two weeks), and the worming, the socialising and despite it being a planned litter and mum being excellent, one poor pup suffered failure to thrive, so she had to be hand fed every 2 to 4 hours, 24 hours a day for 2 weeks.

Not to mention the vet fees, the extra cost of food, puppy milk, worming serum, flea treatment, the cost of chipping and vaccinating x 5 puppies.

It was a fulltime job up until they left home. We still have the one who failed to thrive. I doubt she will ever be big enough or strong enough for me to be happy for her to leave our care so that's 20 years worth of time and money, right there.

Obligatory puppy pic of Tiny waiting for her lunch attached.

Caerulea · 13/09/2024 11:16

@Frequency awww look at the scrawny little thing! So many breeders would have just done away with her, I'm so glad she's staying with you.

Frequency · 13/09/2024 12:04

Thank you. It wasn't something we did for profit so that made it easier to throw time and money at it. I wasn't counting the cost and looking to recoup losses.

The breeder of our bitch asked us to consider having a litter. She retired her bitch but wanted to carry on breeding and showing. She paid for a lot of it (health tests, stud fees, xrays and scans and also gave us puppy milk and a whelping pen) in exchange for pick of the litter. And she was on stand by to help with whelping if we needed her.

Even with her help it was a costly, emotional and time consuming venture. I don't regret it, we are in touch with all the puppy homes and they've brought so much joy to their new families but it's not something we'll be doing again.

Our bitch is booked in to get spayed next week now she has recovered from nursing. All the puppies were rehomed with breeding restrictions in place except the one who went to the breeder who I trust.

@leighks123 Well done for standing firm. You put yourelf, your children AND the dog first despite having a tough time whilst being manipulated. That makes you a very strong woman indeed, so make sure you never forget that if you ever get into a dark place again.

Hopefully he now realises what he had to lose and starts treating you and your home with more respect and consideration than he has done so far.

Apologies all

It was the spelling of English Bulldog that had me laughing! I am sure that student thinks this is how we all talk and write over here!

Anyway, OP, I am delighted he is seeing sense. I would put him on a warning, though, that this kind of stupidity better be out of character (says the woman who sneaked an extra dog into the home a week and half ago!).

You do underestimate the amount of time and money it will cost to raise youngsters. We took in a pregnant feral cat a little while ago, poor thing was so thin she was just fur stretched over bones. She had her kittens within 24 hours of getting here, so could not be moved to a shelter (who were jam packed anyway) so we decided to look after her ourselves. The shelter said to give her kitten food on demand and pack the calories onto her.

This tiny, tiny mog went through £60 of kitten food in two weeks! She was also drinking a LOT of kitten milk so the bill for two weeks alone was closer to £80. Then we needed to feed her three kittens! It really added up, so to feed a litter of large breed dogs and there nursing mother was going to be a hefty bill.

Also, none of them left! I promised DH I would find them homes, but everyone I asked who I knew would give them a good home already had a cat and the shelters were full to bursting - it simply wasn't fair to anyone to dump this little family on them. It is really hard to find good homes.

What I didn't realise is the the Cats Protection League can give you vouchers to get your cat neutered and microchipped for just £10 each. DH was kicking off about the cost of vet bills if we kept them all and thankfully, this removed his last objection. As they were rescues, the CPL was happy to give us the vouchers as it saved the shelter a lot of money and meant they could help other animals. Cats can wait a long time to get adopted. :(
