To not understand the obsession with ‘doodle’ breeds

CherryValley5 · 11/09/2024 21:26

Eg: labradoodles, cockapoos etc.

They are absolutely everywhere! Why are people actively seeking out and paying pedigree prices for dogs that are effectively mongrels? Behavioural problems are all too common, not to mention hereditary health issues due to poor and unethical breeding - I am a dog owner and the vast majority of doodles, ‘poo’ breeds etc that I meet are incredibly hyperactive, with owners who have no clue how to deal with them. Obviously there are exceptions, some are lovely but as a rule of thumb they’re dogs that I tend to cross the street to get mine away from.

The breeder who created the labradoodle calls it his ‘life’s regret’ - that speaks volumes in my opinion!

Doodle dogs are the animal equivalent of silver, crushed velvet sofas.

I'm fine, thanks for asking. As I've previously stated, there is a lot of anger surrounding the intentional breeding of designer crosses, yes. Have you ever worked with dogs? Rescue dogs? It can really open your eyes to why people get angry.

I've got 35+ years of experience in two breeds, as well as working, showing, obedience, agility, flyball and breed rescue. Also in dog nutrition. So yes, I do have a good range of knowledge surrounding dogs. And yes, not supporting puppy farming and BYBs is superior.

That's nice for you. I don't think I've ever come across a well behaved poodle cross. My groomer friends also loathe them, but their owners more 😂

Seriously - so angry - I did not ask for your CV - while I’m sure you have a good range of knowledge you are also judgy and just a bit mean. Your arguments are not wrong nobody likes puppy farms or BYB but you will not seem to accept that there can be (and indeed are) good breeders out there. Neither will you accept these dogs can be well trained and well behaved - I do not believe for one minute that if, as you say, you have all this experience with dogs you have never come across a well behaved poodle cross…. Also my groomer loves my poo, she also quite likes me.

@Waystation , just tell people it's a cockatoo. Far less snobbery.

😂 😂 😂

Our Cockerpoo is the best dog in the world. I tell her every day. ❤️❤️

I'm not just a bit judgy... I'm VERY judgy of people who intentionally breed or buy mutts with silly names.

I absolutely do accept there are good breeders out there. I know lots, who are incredibly dedicated to the health of their breed. Which should be any breeder's main concern.

I also know that every, single breeder who intentionally breeds crosses are bad. There is absolutely no reason to bring them into the world, other than cash.

Sorrelia · 12/09/2024 12:53

I frequently see that kind of rhetoric around mixed poodles owners who are considered "less than" in terms of dog ownership but I don't understand it. My corner of London is full of cockapoos, cavapoos and golden doodles, but they are always very well behaved. It's the little terriers that are often a pain.

You have to think about it from a socio economic perspective really. People who spend lots on that type of dog probably apply the same care to all aspects of their lives, so they would offer the dog good training, grooming, they would.probably own a house and have a garden for the dog to spend time in. They would also have researched with great care the breeder, and characteristics of the breed.

This type of dog very often belongs to comfortable middle class who will go to great lengths to add this companion to their curated lifestyle. They will not want a badly behaved and scruffy dog by their side and will.make sure it's not the case.

Hence why I actually would argue the opposite of your post!

Don’t Cavaliers have serious heart conditions?

What all of them...? We've had cavaliers and cavapoos for years and always lived to a good age.

A mongrel is a factual term for mixed breeds - exactly what doodles etc are, it is quite strange that you think of it as an offensive remark when it is simply the truth. Absolutely nothing wrong with a mongrel, I’ve owned plenty, however they should not be treated in the same way as a pedigree. It is not ethical or responsible.

The fact that you think dogs should be treated differently depending on their heritage speaks volumes.

BrassedOffTiggy · 12/09/2024 13:39

@Worriedmum1975 exactly!
All these judgmental people going off on one about 'pure bred' vs 'cross breed' when I judge anyone negatively who buys from a breeder, whatever breed!
There are too many in rescue without supporting bringing more dogs into the world for cash.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 12/09/2024 13:40

I think doodles may be a huge conspiracy to keep dog groomers employed.

Alternatively there is a desire for family friendly, sensible sized dogs that have appealing looks. Give it a few decades of inbreeding and we will see a new pedigree breed.

Without new breeds being developed we would all have to choose between Tweed Water Spaniels and English Water Spaniels without the option of Cockerpoo being available.

Errrrrmmmmm - what does this even mean? I must be missing something.

sallydoodlecat · 12/09/2024 13:45

Clueless female middle-class muppet here apparently. I have a labradoodle. We got him after lockdown. I had been in contact with the breeder for a long time. Went in with eyes wide open. Our breeder vetted us, gave us a 3-hour handover and gives life-long support. I have the most wonderful dog. He says hello politely to other dogs. Comes back to me when called. Cuddly and has a lovely temperament. Can't we just love our dogs whatever "breed" they are. And yes he looks like a teddy bear. And yes he doesn't moult.

I came here to write this post but you’ve put it so well I don’t need to. I have a lovely Aussie doodle, who is just the best dog and I really don’t care at all if I’m judged for owning him - best money I’ve ever spent…

In my bit of London the owners are largely as you describe in that they've obviously spent a lot to buy a certain kind of dog. They dogs are often very well groomed, and have swish leads/harnesses/coats etc. So yes, their owners are likely pretty affluent and own a house and have a garden etc.
But in general they seem to either not know, or not care, about how to train and handle their dog. Having money doesn't automatically make someone responsible.

lemonmeringueno3 · 12/09/2024 14:02

God knows why anyone would give a shit what makes someone choose their breed of dog.

You could ask that question of any breed.

Presumably, you choose your dog based on the characteristics that are important to you.

I wouldn't want a husky moulting truckloads of fur and walking for miles every day, but presumably some people like them.

Same with doodles.

It really is just snobbery. You are just tittering at the stupidity of people paying pedigree prices for mongrels. But they're popular for a reason and the market supports it.

@Andywarholswig mines an Australian labradoodle too! Gorgeous mongrel mixed breed mutts.

sallydoodlecat · 12/09/2024 14:17

And just to add as I'm on my high horse now, I'm really aware of the judgement placed on doodle and poo dog owners. I've worked so hard therefore to ensure he doesn't jump up at people, that he doesn't bark in the garden. If he's off lead and I see a dog on lead I put his lead on or at least offer. And I get really annoyed with other dog owners who don't make an effort. Please don't make assumptions about all doodle/poo dog owners. There are many reasons I chose a labradoodle and I'm so glad I did.

MadonnaLouiseVeronicaCiccone · 12/09/2024 14:34

I agree OP!
They look daft too. Like a bunch of mini alpacas running around the park.
I have a dog that looks like a dog!

Cockatoos are really easy to train due to both parents being high on the intelligence list. Our girl is so clever, she’s a joy to be around and the perfect size .She was our first dog and sooo easy to train.

Half poodle half parrot? 🦜

Woodlandervibe · 12/09/2024 14:41

I always assumed it was because people want a dog that looks a bit like a teddy?

I’m not a dog person but I think they look kind of sweet.

TheCultureHusks · 12/09/2024 15:39

stevienicksismyfairygodmother · 12/09/2024 08:32

Oh and both parents are pedigree. The breeder still has both and sends me pics annually. Mum, Isobel, is a tall cavalier King Charles and dad, Reggie, is an apricot poodle.

Could you imagine a pure bread apricot poodle? Dog would be a total fruit loaf 👋👋
