And why do they have to have big bright posters with toys on...GRRRRRR. I don't want to have whinging DCs because I won't take them in there, especially when SIL does against my very clear wishes.
Am I just being really mean about the whole junk food thing?

I really dont see the harm in the occasional McDonalds though I am sure there will be many many threads telling me in graphic detail.

Dont think you are being mean though I am sure you have very valid reasons for not wanting them to go. Its up to you of course, they are your children. So no YANBU.

Alambil · 19/04/2008 19:40

once in a while (ie once a month or even less regularly) won't hurt them... IMHO

My DS has them probably once or twice a month and is still stick thin/perfectly healthy. I think that as long as 95% of their diet is healthy, a MacD or pizza or KFC etc won't hurt at all

Lovesdogsandcats · 19/04/2008 19:40

What is the problem with the odd burger and fries? It wont harm them you know!

I do wonder though if you forbid them, whether you are storing up trouble for later? Everything in moderation and all that.

harpsichordcarrier · 19/04/2008 19:45

what is your objection to your children eating there?

Alambil · 19/04/2008 19:47

They could only have ONE "bad" thing in their box - a burger or whatever, fruit and fruit juice (fresh orange) or milk... not THAT bad, surely?

oxocube · 19/04/2008 19:51

Don't have an issue so long as its every now and again as long as my kids recognise the burgers for the tasteless shite that they are . Have more of an issue with the term 'Maccy D's' TBH

vixnpips · 19/04/2008 19:52

I don't mind on occasion. Honestly. But I find that when the DCs have had these types of foods, they are hungry almost straight away, and it ends up just being a really high fat/salt snack to them! SIL is great but if she has the kids they will end up in these places EVERY time and we are talking at least 4 times a month!

oooh....a maccy d thread.....I like these....they argue and defend and then agree to disagree and all go off protesting their right to hate/love it...

vixnpips · 19/04/2008 19:53

I have to agree that they are also tasteless, unless coated in the sauses!

hifi · 19/04/2008 19:59

my family said it was a form of child abuse that my dd had never had a mcdonalds. so i took her and she took one sniff and pushed it away.

vixnpips · 19/04/2008 20:02

LOL hifi

Tommy · 19/04/2008 20:04

hifi -

I have never taken the DSs to McDs. We walk past one very often and they know what it is but have never asked to go in surprisingly. DS2 went to a party once but only ate the fruit and drank water () and doesn't want to go again - in fact, tuned down an invite to another party there.

I don't really have a problem with them but it's not the sort of place that DH and I would go to (we are veggies which does't help) so we've never taken them.

I think anything you hate or ban is just building up problems for the future TBH

VictorianSqualor · 19/04/2008 20:04

We have maccyds about once every six weeks, there isnt one near us so if we go into the city i often get one.
Don't see the issue if it's rare tbh, also my dcs wouldnt whinge if i said 'not today we had one two weeks ago' or something so maybe if you took them once in a blue moon they wouldnt whinge?

VictorianSqualor · 19/04/2008 20:05

btw ds calls it 'manky donalds'

glucose · 19/04/2008 20:20

I love these threads! DD got a really good toy today, snow white with a sort of well thing, and I won a Mc Flurry

tribpot · 19/04/2008 20:29

I'm fortunate in that ds is wheat intolerant, so we literally cannot go in places like McDs (and that in itself is a complete pain in the a*se - today we were in the National Railway Museum in York and dh had forgotten to bring the bag of snacks so we 'lunched' on crisps, ice cream and yoghurt!!)

Acinonyx · 19/04/2008 20:33

Dd has never McDed yet. It was touch and go in the US with my sis recently - but we made it. It's always family that undermine you the most.

vixnpips · 19/04/2008 20:38

The thing is do I really want to feed my DCs Lips and arses with a dash of salt , extra fat and preservatives?? All topped off with some teenage spit and ance flakes???

And what the heck is on B king fries to make them that way??? that is NOT potatoe!!

tribpot- you can go to places like McD's - just ask for burger without a bun- one of the few places that guarantees their chips are gluten free. Asking for a burger no bun always confuses the staff, but ds1 will eat it (remember to ask for no toppings either otherwise it's truly revolting).

MaryAnnSingleton · 19/04/2008 20:41

can I just say I hate MacDonalds being called Maccy D - it makes me cringe. Ds had occasional happy meals when younger but he never craves them - much prefers to go to Wagamama

yurt1 · 19/04/2008 20:42

wagamama tastes very salty to me (although ds3 would love it).

yurt1 · 19/04/2008 20:44

ds1used to love yo sushi when he was a toddler because he loved the conveyor belt and robot (autism heaven things that go round and round) but that's a bit too respectable for us to take him into now. He has learned to behave appropriately (more or less) in McD's in the last few months- he's 9- which is HUGE for him. So I'm currently a fan.
