And why do they have to have big bright posters with toys on...GRRRRRR. I don't want to have whinging DCs because I won't take them in there, especially when SIL does against my very clear wishes.
Am I just being really mean about the whole junk food thing?

probably is quite salty ( pickled bits and pieces etc) but we only go a couple of times a year

southeastastra · 19/04/2008 20:45

you get free flashing tooth brushes from the wimpey

onepieceoflollipop · 19/04/2008 20:46

yurt1 I was just about to say that about the gluten free aspect. (dh is a coeliac). However, according to dh's food list the chips are fine, except when they occasionally have other promotional potato products (eg wedges) on the menu. I think that they are fairly careful re cross contamination so they admit that the wedges aren't gluten free and are cooked alongside the chips).

Having said that dh doesn't like McDs much, but if he is desperate and there is nothing else handy at least he can safely eat most of the menu. (minus the bread rolls of course)

yurt1 · 19/04/2008 20:49

oh the salty wasn't a criticism as such - not in health terms anyway (just lived in Japan so am Japanese food snob )

That's interesting lollipop. DS1 is less sensitive that he used to be, but will remember that if we ever have any problems after McD's.

onepieceoflollipop · 19/04/2008 20:53

yurt1 I have just checked his latest food list and wedges are on it (i.e. they are gf!)

So is the sausage (as you know most sausage in this country is full of "rusk").

I suspect dh has mixed feelings about McD's. On one hand he is pleased when a company clearly identifies what is gf or not. On the other hand he is a bit snobby about it!

tribpot · 19/04/2008 20:57

lollipop - I think I last checked on McDs in Sweden and the chips were a no-no. Could be different here of course. Damn you wheat - why must you be everwhere? I'm cooking burgers for tea (organic from Sainsbugs of course) and appear to have picked up a random pack with Stilton in. Naturally, these have wheat in, Stilton being well known for its wheat content.

Why can wheat not be exiled from everything other than bread and pasta? Must it be in sausages, fish cakes, baked beans, meatballs?!?!

onepieceoflollipop · 19/04/2008 21:02

Tribpot I have dh's latest food list (from Coeliac UK) and the chips (well French Fries but the same product) are definitely in it. There is a tiny tiny chance that they may have suddenly been taken off the list as I haven't updated it for a few weeks, but this is highly unlikely as they have been listed as gf for many years.

We are in the UK. Hth.

Btw Heinz baked beans are fine (you probably know that). Most processed meat, fish etc is full of rubbish additives. When I met dh 7 years ago my diet was full of processed food. Food labelling wasn't like it is now, so I never knew what was safe and what wasn't, hence my diet improved radically.

tribpot · 19/04/2008 21:06

Thanks lollipop - your list is way more up-to-date than mine! I knew Heinz baked beans were okay but FFS is it really necessary to quiz every establishment on their baked bean provenance - there are lots of cheaper beans that have wheat in. At Christmas my poor mum said "ah-ha, I have got round the wheat problem, here is cous cous". She was less than impressed to discover wheat is cous cous (or vice versa).

LIke you we've had no choice but to go - as far as possible - for cooking from scratch, that's fine but I do still object to wheat being put in stuff it doesn't need to be in!

onepieceoflollipop · 19/04/2008 21:14

Apologies to the op for my hijacking on this thread, I will go in a minute, but first can I give tribpot this list of gf baked beans (!) - raising the tone of the thread

These are ok:

Co-op
M&S
Sainsbury's
Somerfield
Tesco

Ok I am going now, promise. Good night.

vixnpips · 19/04/2008 21:16

LOL one you carry on.

I hate MacDonalds and have never taken my children nor ever will unless there is nothing else to eat within a half hour radius. I won't ban them (still too young to go on own) or prevent friends/DH/GPs taking them but I would rather eat my own snot, personally .

sphil · 19/04/2008 21:36

It's funny about the MCD g/f chips issue. I've heard conflicting reports about the gluten content - there was a suggestion somewhere (can't remember where) that they weren't. Whatever, DS2 always goes a bit loopy after he's eaten them (or any thin processed chips tbh). I wonder if they could have any dairy or egg in them - perhaps they're 'coated' with something to make them crispy?

Would love to know - we take DS1 occasionally and it would be nice to be able to go as a family.

sphil · 19/04/2008 21:37

Shold have explained - DS2 is allergic to dairy and egg as well as being on a g/f diet for his autism. Forgot I wasn't on SEN

JiminyCricket · 19/04/2008 21:51

Anti-globalisation/advertising/junk food propaganda is the way forward, imo - "Oh look how they put up all posters about toys to get children to want to go there, I bet the toy would break after one go anyway" bla bla "look how nice the burger looks in the picture, but when you get it it doesn't look so fresh does it". No problem with it though, we go occasionally and friends take them there the odd time(niceish for coffee/milk and muffins).

glucose · 19/04/2008 22:06

southeast - thanks for wimpy tooth brush tip - we bought one of those toothbrushes the other day, its been a real hit. i will have to look out for a wimpy branch.

we are golden arch regulars, but we have also eaten the same Ikea meatballs in UK, Germany and Italy. MacDonalds are not the only globalisation sinners.

yurt1 · 19/04/2008 22:10

sphil - ds1 has become a lot less sensitive recently, but has no problem with them. Marolyn Le Breton (who is very particular) has always said they are OK for the diet. But then I'd always go with individual children- ds1 goes loopy on peanuts for example if he has too many - don't know anyone else with that reaction.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/04/2008 22:13

OP needs to get a grip.

Remotew · 19/04/2008 22:16

Dont you enjoy a BIGMAC now and again? It can also be a bargaining point for going shopping.

I know what you mean but dont stress about it. It ok once in a while. I would be worried if it was the hightlight of your chidrens week, that would wrong and you know it. However, would you want your kids to hear about Maccas and to never have been there cos their parents were too posh!!

glucose · 19/04/2008 22:39

Even better there is now a 'horror! - some MN give their dc tea and other caffinated products' thread to accompany the ill effects of MacDonalds thread.

oxocube · 20/04/2008 07:24

MaryAnn. See my previous post on this thread!

SheikYerbouti · 20/04/2008 07:56

I crave McDonalds about once every 6 months

It's the gherkin in their burgers that does it for me.

DS1 last had a McDs a year ago
DS2 has never had one.

But that's because I just don't think of taking them there.

McDs is a joy when you are hungover

SheikYerbouti · 20/04/2008 07:59

by not thinking of taking them there, I mean that I am never anywhere where McDs is so I don't bother going - but I have no problems with them eating there as long as it's not all the time.

vixnpips · 20/04/2008 12:08

Just to make myself a bit clearer on the OP, I'm not against the occasional burger and chips. What really gets my goat is SIL taking them so often when I have asked her not to. It has caused issues with DC that everytime they go past these places, they want to go in mostly to collect the toys. On a personal note I don't actually fancy a big mac, ( a whopper tho is more likely do it for me). Although I personally don't choose to feed too much of these foods, so when they go often with other people I then choose not to take them myself, sometimes I would want to, yet how many mc Ds can you have in a month!
I was really narked as DD was with SIL yesterday and when they came back I was told that she had eaten really well. The list included, nuggets, fries, coke, ice-cream, a couple of cheese strings, sweets, melon (with sugar on) and fruit shoots to drink! GRRR the fruit shoot was to count in DD fruit count! When she came home she was starving and hyper!

vixnpips · 20/04/2008 12:09

On a caffine issue.. I try and limit this purely on keeping me sane.. the DCs go nuts on it.

OP posts:
onepieceoflollipop · 20/04/2008 12:46

I would be more about the sugar on the melon tbh!
