Tinned hotdogs at school

Hotdogsarevile · 10/09/2024 21:18

I picked my girls up from after school club today. They were a total nightmare, hyper, wouldn’t listen. Even caught them putting thick paint marker pens onto the rug in the playroom. They’ve never ever done anything like this before. I drill into them that pens belong on paper. They’ve had their pens removed now for 3 days (they’re 6 year old - twins)

When I picked them up from school the after school club staff member said they they’d had hot dogs for snack. The girls started laughing saying that they were all pink and floppy 😳

I absolutely hate tinned hot dogs with a passion. I’m sure it’s one of the reasons they were so hyper.

Would I be unreasonable to ask for them to be given a vegetarian alternative (not asking for something to be made specially but surely they must cater for veggies)

The list of ingredients makes me feel physically sick. I had them when we were kids, along with the packet dried onions you added to the brine 🤢

I pay £10 for each child for after school club (I am aware that people pay much more than this) but part of the selling point is that they get given a healthy snack - last week it was yogurt & grapes - absolutely fine

so

YANBU - hot dogs are the food of the devil

YABU - they enjoyed them let them eat them it’s not like they eat them every day

Your children were most likely unruly because they were over tired and over stimulated. Rubber sausages do contain questionable bits of 'meat', but if your kids like them and have the occasionally I can't see a problem. Some veggie sausages are lovely but some are really gross...so it might be a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire!

StaunchMomma · 10/09/2024 22:02

You have every right to ask for them to not be given them again.

You pay for a healthy snack and they are anything but!

LadyChilli · 10/09/2024 22:02

Hot dogs are rank. I don't think veggie ones would be any better though. The meat is the least of your worries on that crunchy textured list of ingredients 🤢My DS gets a lot of processed crap at afterschool for snack (ham, Oreos, sausages) but as he doesn't attend every day I just let it go and give him a decent dinner.

So these are the ingredients for a tin of hotdogs from Asda

Tits. teeth, testicles and all the UPF's.

Truly grim.

UhHuhHuH · 10/09/2024 22:08

WTF is mechanically separated chicken and why does it need to be described like that?!!

UhHuhHuH · 10/09/2024 22:10

I’ve got images of robots going rogue in a factory and there’s just debris everywhere.

It's literally meat slime.

Google the process but make sure you're not eating when you do 🤮🤮

UPFs are a problem, that's why tinned hot dogs are bad... but using all parts of an animal is great. It's embarassing that as a country we cringe at eating organs that are perfectly nutritious and useable in cooking.

StarSlinger · 10/09/2024 22:12

Twins you say?

I would be really upset if my kids were fed this crap.
Let alone that I was paying for the privilege!

Really upset? 😂

GrazingSheep · 10/09/2024 22:22

@HRCsMumma
Why are you laughing at the idea of someone being upset at their child being fed utter crap?

@HRCsMumma

Because it's a fucking hotdog.

Yes it's UPD but it's a treat at kids club. If your life is genuinely so good that the things you get upset about are as small as your child eating a hot dog, then I'm very jealous.

A bit miffed? Okay..
upset?? Go touch some grass. It's a hotdog, not crack cocaine. 😂

HRCsMumma · 10/09/2024 22:28

No, I think it's fair enough. They really are not good for us to consume.

GrazingSheep · 10/09/2024 22:40

@HRCsMumma

It’s not a treat. It’s the cheapest of the cheap processed shite. The sooner people wise up to the harm being done to kids by giving them this shite the better.

amymel2016 · 10/09/2024 22:45

I love an ‘eyelids and arsehole‘ hotdog!

Thistooshallpass24 · 10/09/2024 23:38

@UhHuhHuH imagine a large washing machine and meat slurry , the collagen is added back in to give form and structure 🤢🤢🤢

Thistooshallpass24 · 10/09/2024 23:42

@UhHuhHuH looks like softserve ice-cream

Smoke flavour

Interesting!

That's added to quite a few 'smoky bbq' flavourings. 😬

What exactly do you mean by “organs”? 🤔**

Thistooshallpass24 · 10/09/2024 23:55

@Bohomovies , I'm guessing they mean organs such as hearts,livers, sweetmeats etc they are edible but the UK doesn't really have chicken heart & mash on a Monday, home-made chicken liver pate on Tuesday , sweetmeats on Wednesday etc

Agii · 11/09/2024 02:33

Kids Health in this country isn't valued highly according to the food they are given. And I do agree - tinned sausages shouldn't have a placed in school canteen. Have a normal, less processed sausage would be acceptable.

Read - ultra processed people book, that helps to see why this lady is upset. You wouldn't eat food that likely contains non edible ingredients added in the processing.

Exasperateddonut · 11/09/2024 03:31

The veggie/vegan versions are so good. I love a trashy hotdog but can’t bring myself to eat a meat one now. The alternatives however are excellent. Yum!

As a rare treat, I’d not be worried. Don’t think you can blame their behaviour on that!

RosannaSpider · 11/09/2024 03:32

I don't eat them, my dog will as a treat
