To think it’s okay to take certain things from a hotel?

I’m curious to know what people think about taking items from hotels. For example, I know things like toiletries (shampoos, soaps) are often seen as fair game, but what about things like mugs and glasses? I’ve stayed at a few places recently, and I was tempted by some of the nicer bits. Obviously, I didn’t take anything major, but it’s got me thinking - where’s the line? Is it stealing or part of the hotel experience?

AIBU to think it’s harmless to take certain things? Or shouldn’t all stay behind?

What do you think?

It’s theft
so glad you are not our guest
what on earth are you thinking!!!

Toptops · 11/09/2024 18:32

I've taken single use toiletries - they're useful for a weekend away at a b&b etc and I give unused things to the women's refuge.
I'd draw the line at anything else

Kjpt140v · 11/09/2024 18:36

You are a thief, and thecreason why hotel prices increase.

I’d say it’s pretty obvious, single use stuff is fair game, as will be thrown out anyway, the rest is quite obviously stealing.
What a sad world we live in where this needs to be asked. I despair.

You're that cheap you would seriously take home a part used toilet roll?? 😂 Having worked in hotels...part used toilet rolls are not binned or wasted, they are used in function suite toilets, staff toilets and staff accommodation. They're not buckshee to take home with you 🙄

Having worked in hotels we binned the loo roll if there was less than 25% on the roll. Public toilets/ staff loos had the big rolls. I always thought my employers were tight generally but this thread has been eye opening.

Heyhoitsme · 11/09/2024 18:47

Toiletries are there for your use. If you don't use them take them home. That's it! Anything else is theft.

Icanttakethisanymore · 11/09/2024 18:50

It's fine to take anything consumable. It's not fine to take anything else, unless you are comfortable stealing, in which case everything is fair game.

joolsella · 11/09/2024 18:51

Towels? Pillows?

GreatBigCat · 11/09/2024 19:05

Some nicer hotels I’ve stayed have had a fully stocked complimentary mini bar. As is fully stocked. And if you empty it once a day they just refill it. I took the mini bottles (maybe 20 of them) for two days and wanted to continue for the rest of the week but my dh said no. I gave them all to his dad, this is where we were travelling to, and he was very happy for the freebie, not that he drank a lot. 😂

Apart from that I only take the small soaps when nice ones like Byredo or White Company. I mean it’s included in the price.
A glass would not cross my mind to steal.

Mellowbear · 11/09/2024 19:25

That's awful you should be ashamed

Yourcatisnotsorry · 11/09/2024 19:58

Tiny jams from breakfast because they are so cute.

And available to buy in Sainsbury’s.

KittyBeebee · 11/09/2024 20:12

Mugs, glasses etc., definitely stealing.

Many, many years ago my mum's friend was on her own with 6 DC and had hardly any plates. She couldn't afford to buy new so she went to a jumble sale and bought a set of dinner plates with a hotel logo on. Every time anyone new came for tea she felt the need to explain she hadn't pinched the plates from a hotel!

Madrigal12 · 11/09/2024 20:18

Underlay, only the underlay mind because they'd notice the absent carpet .......and the safe, no-one uses it and no one would check !

HeavyRainSoon · 11/09/2024 20:32

I am higher management for a small chain of hotels and we absolutely would (and do!) charge for anything stolen from rooms, apart from consumables. The cost of everything (including toiletries) is factored into the overall cost of selling the room, and we definitely don’t fill up the toiletries from anything sub-par! Anyone caught stealing from the rooms is also blacklisted.

scotvic · 11/09/2024 21:41

No, that is quite simply stealing, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

whitebutterfly12 · 11/09/2024 22:39

Take the bed, curtains, shower head, anything you can see, why not .. being in hospitality this question infuriates me! Aren’t we all taught not to take things that don’t belong to us when growing up 🤷‍♀️

Washingupdone · 11/09/2024 23:08

I was talking to a woman waiting in the queue for the toilet and we got talking … as you do… about public toilets. She worked at a French railway station and it seems not only does the toilet paper regularly go missing in Avignon but also the toilet bushes. Imagine someone taking a toilet brush out in their bag!

Normallynumb · 11/09/2024 23:14

Of course it's stealing! I also don't understand why you'd even want well used glasses and mugs.. just for the thrill of it?
Look out for the bill, they will have your card details
Personally I have enough clutter, so I try not to add to it.

Mamanyt · 11/09/2024 23:22

I grew up in the hospitality business. Toiletries are fine, expected, and planned for. Especially if they have been opened. They are counted as "expendables." HOWEVER, non-expendable items are a different story. And the theft (yes, it is theft) of those items and the cost of replacing them can add as much as 10% to the room rate charged to EVERYONE when it is all added up. SO...if you really want to pay more the next time you travel, by all means, steal the glasses. And it is never "just one." YOU may take "just one," but it all adds up, and everyone pays.

We went into one room after check-out, and found that every glass, every towel, the bedding (thankfully, they left the pillows), AND the coffee maker were gone. They had tried to get the TV off of the mount, but failed.

Toiletries, sewing kits, shoe cleaning sponges etc I do tend to take. I donate them to our local women’s shelter.

THAT is a wonderful idea!

PeachShaker · 12/09/2024 00:39

I take tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits shampoo or soap - even if I brought my own as it’s handy for a night away where you don’t get it and you have paid for it. Maybe a few sheets of toilet roll if I need it. Not excess just a little.

i did once go a bit crazy and take a mug from a hotel (one who inconvenienced me by telling me it was no smoking and then gave smoking room as I didn’t realise I had to check in at a set time to avoid being given a smoking room). I had a complete freak out and was actually given an upgrade. The mug was taken for souvenir purposes as it was a significant event anyway. On this occasion I took not even a coffee sachet else and the plastic cup I took makes me so happy and I would have paid for it. It’s been almost 20 years and in the circumstances I’d do it again - I even didn’t take a banana for the road at breakfast as I was no soul of the cup.

Thank you Nite Nite.

AmIbeingTreasonable · 12/09/2024 01:11

Taking mugs and glasses is stealing, if you've done this you are a thief.

When on holiday in France several years ago, during a 2 week trip with small children, virtually every toilet we came across (public toilets, and those in the campsite or restaurants) had no loo roll and no soap. In many cases, there was no holder or even fitting where there might once have been toilet roll. We were camping and just added a loo roll and a small container of liquid soap to my bag every time we went out. It never occurred that the toilet roll might have been stolen
...toilet brushes ...? 🤮🤮🤮

whatkatydid2014 · 12/09/2024 09:25

I love that anyone truly believes the small cost per night of consumables like mini toiletries/tea sachets/biscuits would be taken off the room rate if no one ever took them home. I really can’t see it.
