Or should I just be ashamed to be English?

well if St.Georges day should, then so should St. Andrew's, St. David's and St. Patrick's.

No reason for you to be ashamed of being English, but I would rather celebrate being British, if anything.

But I am happy for St Davids or St Andrews to be public holiday in scotland and wales. Makes perfect sense and also St Patricks in Northern Ireland (Ireland already has a public holiday)

unknownrebelbang · 19/04/2008 14:09

I'm up for as many public holidays as the government can throw at us tbh.

SaintGeorge · 19/04/2008 14:09

See? Public holiday for St Andrews day for those in snp constituencies.

Maybe we should all just go on strike and not go to work.

Yup so should the Queens birthday ('tis in half the COmmonwealth allready) but wouldn't that mean 2 more BH in April so should we swap 1st May for Armistice day or Guy Fawkes? How about June (?Queens official birthday I think that would be nice)

edam · 19/04/2008 14:36

I'm all in favour of more bank holidays. Even though St George never seems to have come anywhere near England - wasn't he Turkish or something? At least St David was actually Welsh.

Let's have a Tolpuddle Martyrs day, a Peterloo day and Magna Carta day too, just to remind everyone that we do have to safeguard our rights and freedom...

MoreSpamThanGlam · 19/04/2008 14:38

Sigh......

Gives in.

Kimi · 19/04/2008 14:47

I was born in England I am English I cross out British on forms and write English in fact, I have a friend who is Welsh and although she lives in England now she will tell you she is Welsh and proud of it.

All for a bank holiday in favour of a bank holiday for St, Georges day, (Scotland get more bank holidays then us by the way)

Ambi · 19/04/2008 14:50

It most definitely should be a BH, and a nice Labour day like the US would be nice - ok just Wiki'd that and we have May Day which is labour day apparently

Er, you have actually got me there, 1dilemma, I can't quote dates for any of them (Peterloo was late spring/early summer IIRC). Just significant events worth commemorating!

CoffeeCrazedMama · 19/04/2008 15:49

dd3 certainly thinks it should be - but maybe that's because it's her birthday!

Uriel · 19/04/2008 16:34

Lovely idea. Shakespeare's birthday too.
