Neighbours CCTV

Can anyone help, advise or has been in this situation.

We have new neighbours opposite slightly to the left. They moved in and when they first moved in , we used to see them peering in people front windows when they were out 🤣 . They’re really bizzare and nosey. They have all their curtains shut themselves but we’ve noticed they put a number of CCTV cameras in their house - inside and outside.

One camera is in their front bedroom and is directed fully into our house- it just points into our bedroom and lounge.

I have children who waddle around with no pants on etc as you can’t see into our house… however this camera can!

Does anyone have any advise on what we do . We are reluctant to talk to them as it’s confrontation and also they’ll say it doesn’t point - is their an official person we can report to on this and any experience help welcomed!

Thank you

I like this! Yeah it’s honestly so weird. It’s a static video camera- we have one in our house the same that we have for our dog (it’s in the boot room with no windows in but it’s to watch our dog on) and they have the exact video camera as he so we know how it works and that it’s facing us type thing. I think some people are just so weird ! I do keep giving the camera the middle finger!

Are you quite ok?

LordEmsworth · 09/09/2024 13:58

No it isn't. HTH.

Yeah I’ve just been on the phone to 101 whilst writing this - they’ve been brilliant. It is a civil matter they said and we can ask what they can see and to move it positions. But also they said they will come and look at it as I sent them a photo and they couldn’t believe it it is to the extend it is just facing our house type thing.

This is nonsense, surely you know this? I have three cameras. You can’t tell by looking at them what they can see or what perimeters are set up. It is simply impossible.

vix3rd · 09/09/2024 14:00

Someone recommended rabbit goo from amazon. I second this but get the mirrored stuff so all they can see is the reflection of the camera.

Yes that’s why 101 said to ask them what they are recording and what they can see on their cameras. Literally what I wrote?

I would get the window treatments that mean you can see out, but they can't see in.

The neighbours sound awful and creepy

This. That thin layer of stuff that makes your windows look reflective from the outside but allow you to see out from inside. You can peel it off when they move away. Or else really tall pot plants on your window sill, but that will block your light.

But if someone has a camera in a window that's pointing directly at your house and your house is the only thing in front of it, it's pretty obvious what it's recording isn't it?!

If it was pointing downwards onto a path or driveway, you could imagine perimeters being set up, etc. Or like we have a camera in our window overlooking the garden, but it's a good distance from our back fence and then the same distance again to our neighbour's house, so it's obvious that we're just recording our own garden.

If the neighbour asked, I'd happily show them the Ring app that highlights that their house is cropped from the recording zone, but it's also obvious that there's no way we can record in their house at that distance.

Just because you have three cameras, doesn't mean OP's neighbour's cameras have exactly the same set up as yours.

its not obvious. My camera is pointed at my garage, I’m not recording rhe garage, in fact if you look at it you’d swear I was. I’m not. Because I habe rhe boundaries set up so I don’t. That’s why 101 said ask them, as you can’t tell what they are recording. If you could you’d not need to ask.

You're being weird. Maybe give it a rest?

Finding this a lot more on here recently. Normal threads, and then some posters purposely trying to be argumentative and a bit odd like they get a kick out of going down a rabbit hole or of tangent! It was a perfectly normal thread asking for advice . I suppose you can hide behind the internet though!

On a more relevant note- the PCSO is en route and has rang to say he’s walked past and seen what we mean so when I’m back from the school run he’ll have a chat with me.

Report them to the council because under NO circumstances can another neighbours CCTV camera be filming you, or pointing out towards someone else's property. It is all covered by the data protection legislation so there is a lot the council can do to stop it

If your kiddies are running round with no nappy then draw the curtains for their privacy.

MzPixie · 09/09/2024 16:38

Window privacy film is definitely needed I have neighbour's who actively look into my house so have to keep the curtains closed so also in your situation and getting these for mine now

Yep, noticed it too. Just unnecessary on your post.

Glad the PCSO has been so responsive! Fingers crossed for a good outcome!

Got the most bizzare update on this situation.

I got back from the school run and the local PCSO was outside. He briefly came in and chatted and said he also thought it was a static indoor ring camera (same as I have in our boot room) and that it was just facing in to us. He looked from the lounge and our bedroom and could see it facing us. He minimised it and said I’m sure the actual video camera lens must be somehow pointing down. He also said they have quite a few cameras on their property and the same one that faces ours but facing the other way. So very brief and I expect to put my mind at rest.

He said he would nip over just to reassure us and ask to see where they are facing.

Anyway 15 minutes later ish he knocked back. He said the man wasn’t in but his wife was- she spoke limited English. She let him in and in their front room was a wall of cctv TVs - showing exactly into ours and another neighbour (the only other with kids I’ve realised). He said it’s now in their hands and to leave it with them and he can’t tell us anymore now.

So how bizzare. I can’t work out what he’s doing but I’m glad I went with my instincts that something was not right!

oh my god! Good job you got the PCSO involved then. Well done and I hope they sort it out for you soon.

There’s a police car now outside and they’ve got some machine things from the house they’re taking out. I’m trying to not look obvious but somethings going on. It’s such a nice neighbourhood to live- maybe it’s to do with theft. I only noticed the camera go up a month ago - it’s not been too long to my knowledge. And we’re not a particularly exciting family , we’re quite normal with a cat, dog and kids so I can’t think they really have been wanting to spy on us 🥴

I'm impressed too! When we had our security system installed we were aware that police weren't responding to burglaries unless residents were in the house and were in danger, so I'm surprised they've rushed out to check if cameras are filming outside a boundary.
I believe most police forces across the UK are similarly stretched.

They may have already had other reports of this address and/or the occupants are known to the police. There are often reasons why some calls get responded to quicker than others.

It was the local PCSO - I haven’t spoken to the police. I rang 101 and they sent the chap who is our community officer over. We live in a village. I’ve contacted our PCSO twice before and both times seen them that day and been brilliant. I would guess by listening to LBC most days though this isn’t the norm in cities.
