To ask what you think when you see a young, fat person?

I'm very, very aware that this thread will probably get some nasty responses.

But I'm young (26), overweight and short. I try to dress nicely and I'm actively losing weight, but I'm just curious. What do you actually think when you see a fat person? I've never given it much thought before now as I've been fat my entire life, but what do you really think? Am I walking round oblivious to the fact I'm being judged all the time or do people just not care?

I don't think healthy food equals bland, when did I say that. DH and I were talking about how we like food that tastes good and we both have different cultural inputs with our cooking so it is not bland lucky for us but he does like to make too much probably. Again, in our 30s we didn't think about it, in our twenties pre-children we are loads but you are right we have to adapt in our forties but it just zaps the enjoyment out of most things.

"as does my DH who is an amazing cook but as a PP said for us that hasn't meant weight loss, the food is loads blander for that."

Do you not read what you write?

Anyway, there's your answer. If you think changing your diet is going to zap the enjoyment out of things, then hey ho.

My DH is Norwegian. He makes loads of interesting food. My favourite foods to cook are Asian. Again, loads of interesting food. I don't know why you keep bringing up culture. No one's saying you need to live off mashed potato.

Her arguments are becoming more and more peculiar! There must be something in the (non existent, apparently) cake!

For some reason the well known poster of two days nailclipper has edited my quotes that said I like cake as hoc and left out his from my posting history this:

We have a cake club at work and withdrew membership as I am not a massive fan of cake, they all had

I wonder why?

Again sorry but you are in your thirties no doubt with young DC the way you are going on about good examples. Live and let live and all that but maybe stop being so judgemental as not a great example to your DC.

Ahhhh, now it all makes sense. There's some serious denial going on and so much of it is projecting her own dislike onto other people.

What 😂, I literally have been slim until 40s, I'm completely fed up of the lies that I'm your 40s it is basically excessive exercise or lack of food that keeps you very thin. It is too much time but anyway I've wasted enough time on this you are right there.

I don't think anything unless they're wearing too tight clothes and too short skirts and a crop top then I recoil inside

What the hell difference does being in my 30s make? I've given you multiple examples of women in their 40s, too. Do you also think that women below 40 can't get fat?!

Jesus wept. I'm going to have to follow nailclippers on this one and bow out. You're making such bizarre claims and it's all just getting silly now.

Enjoy your cake (or not), I'm off to do some writing then get an early night for my excessive exercise routine in the morning!

I have never said I like excessive cake that is something nailclipper with a history of 28 posts has fashioned for their narrative. Probably did like cake on ad hoc basis I prefer chocolate or wine. Omg shoot me! Well for a start most women aren't peri and I think I maybe as I've never never had a belly.

When I see a really overweight person, I wonder what awful trauma they've been through.

But maybe I'm projecting, because that was me in my 20s (obese and depressed). I'm slim/healthy now but I have no judgement on anyone.

I agree. For children and young adults, I do feel for them as they've almost certainly been suffering from some kind of trauma or eating disorder. I believe that for children, the fault lies at the door of the parents, especially primary age children who have no control over what their parents feed them. We really shouldn't be "fat shaming" children at all. Even adults in their 20's who are grossly overweight is probably down to childhood issues.

Adults, I'm not really bothered about as they can make their own choices. My sympathies are reserved for children and young adults.

Denial of what. I'm literally reinforcing your opinion which is that you have to exercise or sacrifice fatty food for that attainment of thinness in your 40s. You said you are a runner and not bothered by food so completely the opposite to me. Plus I don't know why someone with so little posting history is so interested in my posting history like I said- very creepy!!

Newsenmum · 09/09/2024 20:05

I don’t really notice, especially as most people are now overweight.

Disturbia81 · 09/09/2024 20:07

I just think a person. I think others don't register people who are an average level of overweight as it's so common now.
However I have a friend who is size 30-32 and she gets a lot of stares and ominous looks from men as they walk past

Weiredeout · 09/09/2024 20:08

Tbh i dont think much re fat 20s ar its common.
I do think about kids though as some seem quite active yet siddenly are gaining weight at about 10-12.

And esoecially on sports day when often there will be one very overweight child who cant run at all.
Tbh there actually arent many overweight kids at dc school certainly before y5.

Imo its also because pe lessons with 30 kids are pretty rubbish and girls especially arent running about. Even the club afterschool i paid for isnt running about.
Basically the kids only do the 2 laps of the field 1x a year abd thats sports day!!

Ive gained a load of weight now in 40s. About 2stones. My parents are literakky calli g me fat. But, actually im only in the overweight category with bmi 27. And in a size 12. Where i was a 10.
Its not fast fodd aa ive had 0 chinese, manybe 1-2 mcdonalds a year etc. 0 fish and chips.shops.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 09/09/2024 20:22

FFS, give it a rest you two. You've totally derailed the thread with your ridiculous digs at each other 🙄

Melodysmum12 · 09/09/2024 20:26

I do notice I won’t lie.
I wonder why they’re overweight.. is it genetics? Do they over eat and not exercise? Are they uncomfortable and how does it affect them? I notice more when young kids my child’s age (6) are overweight.. I worry for their future.

Goldenbear · 09/09/2024 20:30

Apologies for derailing.

Snotfair1 · 10/09/2024 01:15

I wouldn’t notice an overweight person or even someone who would be classed as obese as it’s more and more common. If not distracted or busy, I think I would notice a morbidly obese young woman though. I’d wonder how they feel about their body and size because I struggled with my self esteem throughout my twenties despite being slim.

I wouldn’t have bothered asking on here though OP. mumsnet can be quite fatist and over time you notice the same usernames popping up on certain topics such as weight and being really disparaging towards overweight people across threads which I find interesting. Says far more about them than the people they criticise imo.

Goldenbear · 09/09/2024 18:30

Yes, I know they can in teens, my DS is like this. I should have said and think I have made it clear that I'm referring to older women in their 40s.

I am mid-fifties with two kids at uni and one still at home and have a bmi of 19 which is in the healthy range as I am Asian. I am careful with what I eat Monday to Thursday and then eat what I want for the weekend. I adore eating out which isn’t great for the bank balance. I have bouts of trying to do exercise at home for ten mins a day but that fizzles out. I don’t exercise enough really.

So I am slim but it’s not from any obsessional exercise or eating. I just control myself with eating a bit less four days a week.

Everyone is the weight they are for different reasons. It’s important not to stereotype anyone at any weight, though most of us are guilty of it.

You have to change your diet on weight loss drugs. The drug gives you the willpower to do it.
