Racism at work towards towards clients

Flatspat · 07/09/2024 14:28

My college is racist and I'm getting very bored of her. My other team mates just ignore it and managment saying she isn't causing a problem! Some e.g's of what she has come out with this week -

She had been working with a french client and came back saying ' Ugh that french guy wad a nightmare he was arrogant and up himself like all French people are I'm sick of this I'm not working with any more French a**holes'

Travelers - none of them can read its because they are thick and what's the point they will just end up in prison again because they have crime in their blood.

Romanians and Albanians - they are vile and can't be bothered to learn the language they are all in violent gangs can't we just send them all home.

AIBU to demand that managment put a stop to this? They say she is white and she is talking about white people so it's not racist! She is in her early 20s so not one of those older generation who were brought up in a different time things that people say which is still not acceptable to me. She was too young to vote for brexit but keeps saying things about how it's the best thing the country could do we jusy need to get strict with it!

So is this racist? Am I being overly sensitive or is thus vile and unprofessional and I should take it further?

It absolutely is racism, racism isn't just about skin colour. She's creating a toxic work environment that is unacceptable. If HR don't do anything about it you need to resign and bring a case against them for constructive dismissal - they wouldonly be able to defend themselves if they are able to stand up in court and assert that racism is acceptable and nothing to make a fuss about.

Flatspat · 08/09/2024 14:32

Well 18.4 people think I'm being unreasonable. I am absolutely feeling validated and will take thus higher. Thanks everyone.

Don't worry mums net is full of racists. They think white people are the issue

MrsPeregrine · 19/01/2025 13:32

It’s sounds like she is making generalisations about groups of people based on their country of origin rather than their actual race. So no it’s not racism albeit unpleasant and unprofessional. Just out of interest, would you say that people in Spain who want fewer British tourists are racist? Surely that’s no different to this situation? They are making unfair generalisations on a group of people because of their country of origin.

Didn't they protest against over tourism, rather than "Brits"?

Ph wow this was old!
No the Spanish guys want a fare holiday industry. People wanting super cheap holidays don't spend much and when your entire industry is based on that you need to fight for your right to earn a living. It is starting to get anti English but the English have treated them like crap and used problems and crime in the areas

Update on this! I raised a grievance and it still hasn't been closed. I left the company in November and made the grievance before I posted this it has been ongoingfor over 2 mknths befire I handed in my notice. She became abusive towards me because I'm Scottish! She was making assumptions that I'm an alcoholic and saying I should go back there where they are all like me! I'm so happy in my new job I haven't looked back

Good to hear!

Client will overhear once, or she will slip

BarbaraHoward · 19/01/2025 13:49

Good on you OP, glad the new job is working out.

@MrsPeregrine someone upthread posted the Equality Act definition of racism, which does indeed include national origin. Not sure what the legal position is in Spain, but probably similar as I'm guessing it all stems from EU legislation.

EmmaMaria · 19/01/2025 14:05

Ermm. what time was that? I'm 67 and would find every one of those comments unacceptable. And they were unacceptable when I was growing up too. Some older people are racist/ Some younger people are also racist. Case in point, but if you take a look around, the right wing is doing rather well with some young people.

I also voted against Brexit.

You do realise that your assumption that the "older generation" think these things are acceptable, or that times were different so that makes it ok, is as bigoted as she is?

pikkumyy77 · 19/01/2025 14:32

Good for you OP! So happy you have a good new job.

JackGrealishsCalves · 19/01/2025 14:36

Let slip to the clients what she has said.
If they move their business and cause a stink I think management may suddenly change their tune

So that's ok then? Sorry but it sounds like something your colleague might say.

There is never a good reason to be anti anyone just because they come from a certain country.

I said that because I have seen people make the older people have an excuse comments on things before I absolutely don't believe any age group is racist or anything else just giving a picture and covering because I know mumsnet!

Let's juts say that tge clients have no choice and can't move they are not there by choice and tbh their opinions would not really be listened to!
I believe they should still be treated with respect she does not!

I think the Spanish are just anti being used for cheap labor and holidays heir labour laws probably also need looked into BUT this isn't my area of expertise and if you fancy an argument about it feel free to start your own post. Good luck to you.

I don't disagree with you.

But making excuses for them being 'anti English' or anti anyone just because of the country they come from, isn't on.

I'm not sure your understanding of not disagreeing is the same as mine.

Anyway, it still stands that if you want to start your own post to disagree in agreement about something unrelated to this post, feel free. Off you trot enjoy your arguments and have a lovely evening of Internet arguing

What kind of company do you work for?!!!?

I would be looking to leave immediately if that kind of thing is tolerated.

FuzzyWuzzyWuzABear · 19/01/2025 19:39

It's not unrelated though, even if you're trying to pretend it is.

You were making excuses for a dislike of people from another country, based purely on the fact it's where they were born, which is something it sounds as though your colleague would do.

The difference is you don't like it being pointed out to you.

JHound · 19/01/2025 19:40

Why are people saying “xenophobia rather racism”?

Travellers are, generally speaking, a British minority ethnic group.

hattie43 · 19/01/2025 19:40

Yawn .
What's with all these goady threads lately . People purposely choosing contentious subjects , just to sit back with their popcorn bored on a Sunday night

JHound · 19/01/2025 19:42

Explains why your manager doesn’t see racism when it’s in front of her face - she engages in the same behaviour.

Travellers are British.

That said I am not sure negative stereotypes and outbursts based on nationality are somehow ok. And her behaviour goes far beyond that.

Flatspat · 19/01/2025 22:40

wanders away and let's you all argue on an old post
