I am due any day now and I'm not expecting to be coming home in my pre pregnancy jeans and as I have a very large bump, I'm not expecting it to disappear into thin air.
I've lived in floaty maternity sundresses for the last few months.
So what did you wear to hide the postpartum belly while getting back to shape?
D like to get a few things to prepare.

Loungewear when I'm the house and leggings with a floaty stop I could breast feed in when out and about. I was lucky my bump almost disappeared after I gave birth so was back in my pre pregnancy clothes within a week. But leggings were more comfortable. Don't forget big pants and plenty of maternity pads- you'll need more than you think!!

Luio · 07/09/2024 08:50

Comfortable clothes that you can snooze in if you get the chance.

maras2 · 07/09/2024 08:53

Sanitary towel on a belt.
Big knickers.
Sensible breast feeding bra.
Sensible breast feeding nightie.
Dressing gown of doom. Grin
All en vogue for a 1960/70's delivery. 😆

Singleandproud · 07/09/2024 08:54

I could get back in jeans two sizes smaller than the ones I started my pregnancy in within 3 days - but I had awful hyperemesis and lost several stone through sickness would not recommend as a weight loss method.

You do not need to hide your post partum stomach, you have just had a baby and that is exactly what you are supposed to look like.

I'd continue wearing the dresses if you are comfortable with them and have relatively easy access for breastfeeding. But keep in mind that despite the lovely coloured maternity dresses Kate Middleton wore you are going to have a mammoth period and your boobs are going to increase and be sore and after day 3 you sweat alot to get rid of the excess fluid you've been carrying. So perhaps lots of soft, dark lounge wear for the first few weeks.

Maternity leggings, baggy tshirts (husbands) and checked shirts were the comfortiest combination for C-section and breastfeeding in the very early days.
I also wore PJ's and joggers a lot at home. I did find I got into my old clothes quite quickly size wise but comfort took a few weeks.

RaspberryBeretxx · 07/09/2024 09:04

Leggings, maternity jeans (I found them really uncomfortable after about 25 weeks preg anyway so they were good for after!) and lots of dresses - tiered shape were good like this. I had a couple with button front, sort of a smock shirt dress that were good for feeding in. I found extra bits on Vinted as I knew I wouldn’t be wearing for very long.

Lemonadeand · 07/09/2024 09:07

Maternity leggings, baggy tops, flip flops for hospital. I remember wondering this exact thing!

SarahB88 · 07/09/2024 09:10

My daughters nearly 4 months and I’m still in the big pants 😂

My bump went down before I’d even left the hospital so my plan of wearing my maternity joggers home didn’t go well because they didn’t fit and kept falling down so I left in PJ bottoms. I just wore my pre pregnancy leggings once I was home. I’ve since bought some that have a nice thick waistband to help support the jiggly tummy. Even though my bump went right down I’ve still got some loose skin and I liked the extra support when recovery from my section.

Take a couple of options with you for leaving the hospital as you might still have your bump or it might be totally gone. Same for afterwards really, you don’t know what your body is going to do. I’m 6kg lighter now than when I fell pregnant but I’m a totally different shape so things fit differently and there’s some things I wore pre pregnancy that I’ll never wear again.

VestaTilley · 07/09/2024 09:10

I didn’t care about getting “back in to shape”. You’re recovering from childbirth, not dieting for a holiday. During an 8 day hospital stay I lived mostly in pyjamas and nighties, then at home it was whatever was comfortable with a massive episiotomy and leaking breasts.

Wwhatnow · 07/09/2024 09:16

I embraced the leggings and joggers, and bought some new pretty nursing bras and tops, and nighties and pj’s. (I’m one never to usually leave the house in leggings / joggers, and was back to normal within a few months, but just embraced comfort dressing for the early weeks)!

Ella31 · 07/09/2024 09:16

Big joggers, loose top. And get loads of those big maternity pads. I went through mountains of them. Needed them for about 6 weeks

Saschka · 07/09/2024 09:19

Maternity leggings - you still have a bit of a bump (NOT fat, your uterus) for a week or two afterwards. Obviously smaller than when you were full term, but trousers with a soft stretchy band work well while it is going down.

LadyRoughDiamond · 07/09/2024 09:20

Stretchy leggings and a long shirt. Sometimes with a long cardigan over the top. Leggings were comfy and helped, along with big pants, to keep the enormous maternity pads in place. Shirt was long and to covered up the maternity pad and unbuttoned for breast feeding.

DS2 was an emergency c-section and so it was back to leggings again as I just wanted something soft on my stomach. I think I was back in normal clothes in a couple of months, but those early days were all about comfort and things I could curl up and nap in.

Saschka · 07/09/2024 09:20

In terms of tips, I was breastfeeding and mostly wore H&M breastfeeding vests with a jumper over the top.

Mammyloveswine · 07/09/2024 09:30

My bump literally went down before my eyes both times! I was expecting to still have it but nope! (I'm fat now ten years later so I can say this without sounding all smug I promise!).

Leggings a vest top and a loose shirt were my outfits of choice!

Lemonyyy · 07/09/2024 09:32

A lot of baggy button up shirts - can unbutton to breastfeed. Leggings, joggers or pj bottoms.

Edingril · 07/09/2024 09:33

Just my normal clothes

Changeyourfuckingcar · 07/09/2024 09:33

A lot of dresses. Jersey wrap dresses were good for breastfeeding, I found.
And very big pants but my god I hated those, uncomfortable things, made me feel less like myself than most other things 😂 I had a c-section so not masses of choice of course.
I could wear my jeans again 3 weeks pp… but I certainly didn’t want to until a little later!!

89redballoons · 07/09/2024 09:40

I had these floaty, hippy style trousers which had shirring all around the tummy and bum area, so they expanded and shrunk with my bump.

I think these were the ones I got. They were ridiculously comfortable for in hospital and around the house.

On top, if breastfeeding then I found the easiest and most comfortable clothes were a soft bralette, a stretchy camisole and a tshirt on top - that way you can just pull out a boob without faffing around with clasps and different styles of nursing clothes. Bralettes like this worked best for me - something with a deep V in the middle so you can just pull your boob over the top. I have smallish breasts, though, so this might not work for everyone.

At home in the early days I would often wear just the bra with a long cardigan over the top for warmth, and for snuggling my newborns in. (And now I'm feeling very broody thinking about it Grin)

Chillilounger · 07/09/2024 09:41

Maternity clothes. They were the only thing that fits.

SPsmama · 07/09/2024 09:43

I left the hospital in pyjama bottoms. At home I either live in leggings or pyjama bottoms. I'm still wearing my maternity clothes six weeks postpartum. 😂

Weddingclash · 07/09/2024 09:52

I’m the same boat OP - I’ve rotated a few maternity summer dresses but don’t think they’ll be the right thing to wear when my baby arrives in a couple of weeks. But equally don’t want to spend a fortune on clothes I might not wear for long.

I’m planning on wearing wearing maternity leggings (having a c section so need high waisted things) with some nursing tops or vests & then cardigans. I’ve not ordered them yet but seen H&M leggings recommended from here. I’ve also ordered some nursing t-shirts from Shein

Mammma91 · 07/09/2024 09:54

I wore loose jogging bottoms, a loose top and a hoodie in the car home. From there on I was in pjs for a week.

HerewegoagainSS · 07/09/2024 09:55

Loath leggings with a burning passion unless for exercise.

Trousers and a blue top and pumps. Oh and we went home via Costa - needed a decent coffee after 2 days on rank stuff. Remember this bunch of old ladies cooing over DS - they hadn’t seen a kid that new since their own!

Elphame · 07/09/2024 10:03

Leggings and a baggy jumper but I was back in my pre pregnancy jeans within a couple of days.

Hyperemesis has its compensations for 9 months of misery.
