Could this be something more sinister?

I have been on and off bloated for about a year now. I haven’t been bloated all the time, usually just when I’ve been eating.

In this time I’ve had coeliac ruled out, I’ve had a stool test (all fine), I’ve had basic bloods and I’ve had a pelvic ultrasound (fine). I’m currently awaiting a colonoscopy.

But the past week, it’s been on another level. I’ve been absolutely huge to the point I looked pregnant. There’s a weird triangle shape to my belly.
I’ve been waking up with cramps, I was doing sulphur burps yesterday, and I just feel absolutely huge. I was extremely constipated also, and finally went yesterday, and one of the stools looked slightly black.

I went to the doctor on Tuesday who gave me IBS tablets and I have also not eaten gluten this week.
But it just seems to be getting worse. I’m literally getting bigger.

(pregnancy test was also negative).

Should I be more concerned that it could be something more?

I would stay off gluten for a while, just because you aren't coeliac it doesn't mean you aren't intolerant. I would also go off dairy for a while too. I have removed both from my diet and still occasionally would get painfully bloated so I started tracking foods and noticed it was when I had something with Guar Gum in it, so now I know I can't eat foods with it. I would keep a diary of foods that you have when it seems to get worse. Also, get some prunes and eat them regularly because if you are backed up the gas may be getting stuck behind hard stools and making it worse. I hope you find a solution, it sounds horrible.

H pylori?

Sad27YearOld · 06/09/2024 14:08

the doctor gave me IBS tablets and antibiotics in case of infection. I’m just worried that they’re not making a difference, in fact, it seems to be getting worse. Also, I did agree with the gluten part. I haven’t eaten any for a couple of days now and yet I’m still getting worse

Im thinking of going to A&E is that a terrible idea?

Gallstones / Gallbladder issues.

If you think it is either accident or emergency, it is appropriate to go to A&E. Otherwise, yes, it is a terrible idea. A&E workload aside, do you really want to sit there for 8 hours to be given some constipation relief and advice to see your GP?
Bloating may not be due to gluten at all, in fact FODMAP gives a whole list of foods which are generally considered innocuous by most people.
I am assuming you tried all the usual stuff to reduce bloating - movement, rennie...

H pylori?

I thought possibly this also, especially when sulfur burps were mentioned.

Doesn’t sound like you’ve had an accident or are having an emergency. If you feel you need to be seen could you ring 111? They may get you an appointment to be seen but I don’t think you need A&E for this

You often need to take a full course of antibiotics to feel any effect. You've had several medical investigations. Your GP saw you earlier in the week. You've got a colonoscopy coming up. Clearly, your GP is taking you seriously and has ordered a series of tests to try and find out what is causing your discomfort.

What exactly do you expect a visit to A&E to achieve? And what exactly do expect to achieve by asking an internet forum for opinions on whether you should be more concerned?

Take your antibiotics and wait for your colonoscopy and then take it from there.
