To hate Colin the caterpillar cake

And Connie, and any of the other supermarket knock-offs.

The cake is too dry! The outer chocolate shell is cheap and nasty tasting. Same goes for the hard face and feet, which don't complement the crumbly dry cake inside. All in all, a very unpleasant eating experience. The best bit is the decorative smarties.

Any time a Colin or one of his leggy friends is produced at a party, usually to be met with great glee by the other guests, my heart sinks. A relative had a Colin and Connie for his wedding cake and I was SO disappointed. All that waiting around for nothing! (It was a dry wedding for me so I was perhaps overinvested in the cake part.)

I think I'll be set upon as being U, but I had to get this off my chest. It's the worst celebration cake and its popularity is undeserved. Sorry, Colin fans!

@FatherConfesserTheGuesser @TomatoSandwiches

Whipped Colins... (no walnuts, all mallow).

My 40th birthday party buffet was awash with them.

I love a Colin but haven’t had one for ages. I have a notion for one right now !

Solonga · 04/09/2024 08:03

I would probably prefer Colin to fruit cake with marzipan and hard icing though, I quite like the feet

Biffbaff · 04/09/2024 10:03

OMG @CheeseWisely - I may actually like a whipped Colin!

😂

I honestly think it is only popular due to the hype, and the fact it looks cute. It is dry, horrible, and for people who don't know good chocolate cake imo.

BabaYetu · 04/09/2024 10:10

RIP Cherry Garcia, @ILuvfur5 ! It was the best one.

I’d rather have a Cadbury’s mini roll and a cuppa than a Colin. I’d rather have a good scone than either.

IsThisIt39 · 01/11/2024 20:54

Colin is a twat, he’s absolutely full of shite, and who wants to eat an insect anyway?

Beepbeepoutoftheway · 01/11/2024 20:56

I had them for my wedding cakes and even now, people comment on how amazing they were 😁

You could always say no 🙃

Cheesetoastiees · 01/11/2024 21:06

He and all his caterpillar pals are such happy looking little gits that I always eat them when they’re available and forget that they are mildly disappointing.

I always finish them though because I’m greedy!

MildGreenDairyLiquid · 01/11/2024 21:21

This is the most unreasonable opening post I have ever read on MN. Colin the Caterpillar is a god-level cake, especially the slice with the face.

If I was on death row and they asked for my last meal, I’d have Colin for starter, main, and dessert.

Rumour has it that all royal wedding cakes are Colins mashed together and covered in royal icing.

Eat one, and you have been touched by the divine.

LegoTherapy · 01/11/2024 21:24

It's barely even food, just a long list of shite. Have people who like it never had proper cake??

craftysnake · 01/11/2024 21:25

I refuse to eat shop cakes, they are utter waste of calories and my colleagues know that I think this kind of cake is shit

I feel sad that you’ve never had good food

3smallpups · 01/11/2024 21:31

I don't like him either, cake to dry, chocolate too thick
But I do love an m and s extremely chocolatey chocolate coated Swiss roll , so much better .

I have - Colin.

blackbird77 · 01/11/2024 21:37

I love Colin! Although I always try to get Connie where I can as I like to show my support for females in male dominated industries 🐛

Hawkerslife · 01/11/2024 21:50

I agree - it is a dry glorified chocolate sponge roll but I still buy one for my own birthday each year because it's cheap and cheerful and the kids like it - not because I think it's a fantastically made cake.

The best copy cat I've tried was Co-ops version. It was so much better!

Solonga · 02/11/2024 10:11

I like the feet and the face and usually buy the Christmas one, I shall enjoy the chocolate sleigh this year, I also bought Coronation Colin

ImNunTheWiser · 02/11/2024 10:19

Sorry, I don’t share the Colin love. I can, however, thoroughly recommend the Colin dog toy (or, at least, my dog can)…

I can’t believe people have such rich opinions about it. Surely it’s just an easy and novel cake to display for kids’ birthday parties? No grown adult is really eating it or savouring it surely?

Loveliest comment and gorgeous dog, you win 🥇

LadyGabriella · 03/11/2024 11:13

Everyone try the mini Colin’s! So much more moist and chocolatey

GroovyChick87 · 03/11/2024 11:15

Not had a Colin in ages but had a Cuthbert and he was rather yummy.

zingally · 03/11/2024 11:27

Agree. Not a good cake. Dry af and the thick chocolate is nasty.

VickyEadieofThigh · 03/11/2024 11:30

angeldelite · 03/09/2024 22:35

Cuthbert 😂

Surprised they didn’t go for something easier to say like Calvin or something

The wondrously funny Aldi social media team call a Cuthbert cake a 'Cuthy B'!
