To hate Colin the caterpillar cake

And Connie, and any of the other supermarket knock-offs.

The cake is too dry! The outer chocolate shell is cheap and nasty tasting. Same goes for the hard face and feet, which don't complement the crumbly dry cake inside. All in all, a very unpleasant eating experience. The best bit is the decorative smarties.

Any time a Colin or one of his leggy friends is produced at a party, usually to be met with great glee by the other guests, my heart sinks. A relative had a Colin and Connie for his wedding cake and I was SO disappointed. All that waiting around for nothing! (It was a dry wedding for me so I was perhaps overinvested in the cake part.)

I think I'll be set upon as being U, but I had to get this off my chest. It's the worst celebration cake and its popularity is undeserved. Sorry, Colin fans!

I’ve never understood how they are so popular. I love cake, but they are a definite no for me.

Only thing better than Colin the Caterpillar are his kids.......

The tubs of M&S mini rolls. Especially cold from the fridge. Crispy shell & soft inside....😋

Have you tried the Mini Colin’s? They’re as good as the mini roll tubs.

Bluesclues1 · 03/09/2024 23:32

lol we had Colin and Connie for our wedding cake. No complaints that we know of (guests were also served dessert!).

@LadyGabriella

And if I recall they then multiplied to feed thw room, suddenly after the ceremonial cuttung many appeared on the table. it seemed to me that the whole.room was "oh that's so cool, quirky, great, fab idea..." I was shitting myself going through the photos with the B&G as that part got closer incase the roaming photographer got my shocked and appalled facial expression.... I was really looking forward to cake or pudding... 😂

Loool I would’ve been the same. Amazing 😂😂

I've always found chocolate cake a bit dry. Now I need gluten free versions it's a bit worse. I think us gf people have Frieda who has a green face.

Also M&S did start doing a sweet box that was Colin best bits and was a pack with mini faces, feet and the smarties so you don't need the cake.

TheOnlyCherryOnMyTree · 03/09/2024 23:41

I tried it for the first time this week(I'm in Ireland it isn't a big thing here really) and said the exact same thing, dry as balls and the chocolate was cheap and awful tasting. I expected much more from what seems like a British cult classic.

Fizbosshoes · 03/09/2024 23:43

I love chocolate but I find Colin (and others)quite disappointing
Agree @LegoTherapy about Cadbury mini rolls as well, although Cadbury in general is nowhere near as good as I remember it in the 1980s

Stewandsocks · 03/09/2024 23:43

You are so wrong!! The sponge is nicely dense so you can hold it in a party serviette and eat it easily without needing a fork, the ganache is delicious, the chocolate it's covered in is thick and yum.

I'm not a fan of white chocolate so not bothered by the face and feet, birthday person in our house gets the bum.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/09/2024 23:45

I’m not a huge fan personally - I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it as such but I’m not a fan.

My DS really likes them though, and most children seem to. Think it’s more for kids? I think they look cute though.

I’m not a wildly into cakes person - sometimes I want some but it’s not something I’d look forward to as such.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 03/09/2024 23:56

What was the wedding like in general??

StormingNorman · 04/09/2024 00:02

Colin’s cute but always disappoints. If you want a chocolate log you really can’t beat a Cadbury’s Mini Roll or two, ok three at most.

Mini rolls arnt dense enough though. A Mini Colin is more substantial and probably equates to 2x mini rolls.

He’s a complete dream if he’s been microwaved for 20 seconds

LadyGabriella · 04/09/2024 00:16

Sorry I’m just really obsessed with Mini Colin’s lol.

Prepare to never look back at Cold Colin again!

Cuthbert forever.

M&S lost their case against Aldi, but both got great publicity.

Now Aldi can't resist rubbing the M&S noses in it. To the benefit of both.

Aldi's media team are excellent (Facebook) really funny

Came here to post this! Such gooey amazingness. Big slice of cake with a foot on top that melts into the sponge 😍

YES! Or if you get the end piece and his face melts with his body. I can’t believe it’s not the more commonly suggested way to eat him

spaceshooter · 04/09/2024 00:37

Processed supermarket cake is fucking disgusting and I judge anyone who buys it. Joking Grin

spaceshooter · 04/09/2024 00:38

I really want some now!

ILuvfur5 · 04/09/2024 00:41

Best thing about tolerating a birthday party for me is the traditional birthday cake.

Its something you can’t seem to buy as a single cake or a small one and as an adult I don’t have enough people to offer slices to, if I buy one I’m pretty much scoffing the lot!

Does anyone remember Ben & Jerry’s birthday cake ice cream? It was basically a birthday cake surrounded by ice cream, me and DP were obsessed.

Sadly it’s been discontinued like Cherry Garcia, I mourn that ice cream more than a beloved relative.

Also does anyone remember tutti frutti ice cream? I remember that was a firm favourite of mine growing up.

I am a big fan of ice cream and often make my own, the Baileys, pistachio, iced latte, Turkish delight and cherry Bakewell have all been popular.
I’m working on birthday cake but based on these comments I’ll steer clear of Colin and his pals.

LadyAddle · 04/09/2024 00:42

@EngineEngineNumber9 @RoyallyEFFEDOFF Now I really want to try a microwaved mini Colin, and I'm on a GP advised diet - no mention of hot caterpillars. You meanies.

poppysgalore · 04/09/2024 00:47

My kids refuse to eat Colin cake. I don't blame them.

canwestopwiththenameshaming · 04/09/2024 01:01

@ILuvfur5 I remember tutti fruity ice cream in the 80s. There was a Gino Ginelli one that tasted so good. Now I have the "Gino oh Gino Ginelli" tune in my head!
