To hate Colin the caterpillar cake

And Connie, and any of the other supermarket knock-offs.

The cake is too dry! The outer chocolate shell is cheap and nasty tasting. Same goes for the hard face and feet, which don't complement the crumbly dry cake inside. All in all, a very unpleasant eating experience. The best bit is the decorative smarties.

Any time a Colin or one of his leggy friends is produced at a party, usually to be met with great glee by the other guests, my heart sinks. A relative had a Colin and Connie for his wedding cake and I was SO disappointed. All that waiting around for nothing! (It was a dry wedding for me so I was perhaps overinvested in the cake part.)

I think I'll be set upon as being U, but I had to get this off my chest. It's the worst celebration cake and its popularity is undeserved. Sorry, Colin fans!

What annoys me is they ALL TASTE THE SAME

Like dress him up in his Halloween outfit or a Santa hat or whatever crap they do on the other occasions in the year but you're still getting that boring chocolate flavour in the middle. Would it kill them to throw another flavour in there??

fairydust11 · 03/09/2024 22:40

Completely agree op, it’s just a cheap chocolate shell covered swiss roll, there are so many nicer, tastier & moist cakes in the shops.
Plus I genuinely can’t believe someone would choose that as their wedding cake… I wouldn’t even buy it for a kids party!
Horses for courses I guess.

I would 100% pick a caterpillar cake over a fruit cake for a wedding

I love a Collin! I don't get the Percy pig love though.

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/09/2024 22:29

Yeah, Cuthbert is better cake wise and not as sickly - and at about a third of the price, even if you’re disappointed you’re still two thirds less disappointed.

Edited

😂

They are reassuringly horrible, which makes them nice. No disappointment, they taste exactly how you expect.

The best, however, is The Co-Op Charlie the Caterpillar. Although the face isn't quite as good as Colin's.

CheeseWisely · 03/09/2024 22:47

YABU. I love a Colin. I love the little mini roll Colins more. But the 'walnut whip' style Colins are the best of the lot.

Goldbar · 03/09/2024 22:48

I don't mind the mini Colin's/Connies, but not fond of the big ones.

Whipped caterpillar?

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 03/09/2024 22:51

I agree OP. Dry and disappointing. Even my kids don’t like any of the caterpillar cakes they’ve tried.

if you know what i mean eyebrow wiggle GIF

What did you just say?

fairydust11 · 03/09/2024 22:55

@Differentstarts I opted for a 3 tier iced cake with different flavour sponges on each tier. I don’t think the traditional fruit cake is as popular anymore, or it wasn’t when I was looking for a cake maker.

Either way I wouldn’t opt for that, if money was tight and I was to buy a supermarket one for my wedding, waitrose do so many nice tastier & moist buttercream sponge cakes in different flavours.

jen337 · 03/09/2024 22:58

Who’s forcing you to eat this cake?

LifeofBrienne · 03/09/2024 22:59

Hmm I actually like Colin the Caterpillar cakes whereas as someone without a particularly sweet tooth I find most kids’ party cakes tasteless and sickly. The homemade ones too, because the whole point is the fancy decorations and not the taste.

Cobblersorchard · 03/09/2024 23:01

I agree @Biffbaff

Colin and every supermarket variant are just dry and horrible. Yuck.
It’s a No from me.

TikehauLilly · 03/09/2024 23:02

Yanbu

A relative of mine also had a Connie and colin as wedding cake and NO pudding... that was pudding... I love cake... I hate dry colin... very sad.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/09/2024 23:02

The Aldi version is REALLY good!

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 03/09/2024 23:04

A couple of birthdays with such cakes made me determined not to buy supermarket cakes again. Now I make my own cakes and the kids love them in all their wonky goodness

LadyGabriella · 03/09/2024 23:06

Try the Mini Colins. They are fab. Super chocolatey.

Kitkat1523 · 03/09/2024 23:06

All my kids and GC have had them over the years and they just loved em…they’re for kids though….don’t know any adult that has ever eaten a slice….certainly I never have….like would you?….they look so sickly 🤮

This has made me laugh in bed so much.

Biggaybear · 03/09/2024 23:10

Only thing better than Colin the Caterpillar are his kids.......

The tubs of M&S mini rolls. Especially cold from the fridge. Crispy shell & soft inside....😋

My niece is with you 110% on this As she says “no Colin , no party !” And she’s 26 !

TikehauLilly · 03/09/2024 23:21

@LadyGabriella

And if I recall they then multiplied to feed thw room, suddenly after the ceremonial cuttung many appeared on the table. it seemed to me that the whole.room was "oh that's so cool, quirky, great, fab idea..." I was shitting myself going through the photos with the B&G as that part got closer incase the roaming photographer got my shocked and appalled facial expression.... I was really looking forward to cake or pudding... 😂
