“There’s no way you can be pregnant without symptoms”

Lemongrassays · 03/09/2024 14:58

DH and I are due to start IVF soon for unexplained infertility. While we wait, we are still TTC and recently had a HyCoSy (standard precursor to IVF at my clinic), which we were told can increase our chances of conception a bit as it does flush things through.

Best friend knows about our situation and I mentioned that I was feeling hopeful this month. Can’t test yet as AF is not due for another 4 days. She asked if I had experienced any symptoms (I haven’t), to which she said there is absolutely no chance in hell of a pregnancy if I haven’t noticed any symptoms by now. She then launched in to a long rant about how she had every symptom under the sun before her missed period and I’d just “know” if I was.

Am I being totally stupid in holding out hope? I’ve never been pregnant, but didn’t think it was uncommon for the first and only symptom of early pregnancy to be a missed period? 🤷‍♀️

With my first pregnancy I had no symptoms whatsoever. Only reason I took a test was because I was 2 days late. I had symptom spotted for years and was actively ttc for 4 years so was certain it was just an irregular period.
I didn’t have any morning sickness, no food aversions, no tiredness or fatigue. I was completely normal throughout the first trimester!

Givemegoldensun · 03/09/2024 15:58

It’s very early to have any symptoms- I think some people actively imagine them! I’m twenty-one weeks pregnant with my second baby. First pregnancy no real symptoms apart from intense hunger from week 5ish and a bump (but not until five or six months). Second pregnancy no symptoms except intense hunger and dizziness from week 5ish and a bump from 16 weeks or so, although very easy to hide until a couple of weeks ago. You very well could be pregnant- your friend sounds a bit bitter.

Americano75 · 03/09/2024 15:59

She sounds lovely and not at all full of shit.

Got everything crossed for you OP. 🙏

Lemongrassays · 03/09/2024 16:05

Thank you, glad to know I’m not completely crazy here!

Rubbish. I had severe nausea from week 6 to week 19, but I had zero symptoms before then. I only tested because I was intending to booze it up at a festival and thought I'd better check 😂

I also know someone who had no idea she was pregnant until six months, although that is very unusual.

redalex261 · 03/09/2024 16:14

Nonsense! I had no idea (and was off contraception as had been trying for 18 months) and only did a test when a Tampax advert reminded me I hadn’t bought any for ages! Was 8 weeks gone! Tell her to zip it.

Coconutter24 · 03/09/2024 16:15

What an insensitive friend you’ve got there how can she be so blunt knowing what you’re going through!! I had symptoms both times very early on and before I tested but you hear of women all the time having no symptoms or very few. Some women have even gone all the way to 9 months and no symptoms until a baby starts to come out! Ignore her

GettingStuffed · 03/09/2024 16:18

I was 12 weeks pregnant with DD before I had any symptoms

Rory17384949 · 03/09/2024 16:19

Very insensitive of your friend. I didn't have symptoms until my period was late, then tiredness and nausea from about 5 weeks

Not true. Some people only discover they are pregnant when they go into into labour. Very rare but true (not me!).

Beezknees · 03/09/2024 16:21

0 symptoms for me, I found out when my period didn't come. Had no idea, wasn't trying for a baby (I was a teenager) and drank alcohol a lot in the first couple of weeks. I actually got extremely drunk on one occasion.

I continued to have no symptoms for the entire first trimester, and convinced myself I must have had a false positive until I had my first scan.

Had a bit of morning sickness in the second trimester and then some cravings but aside from that nothing. No sore boobs, didn't feel particularly tired.

TheRookieMum · 03/09/2024 15:10

Your friend was horribly insensitive. I didn't have a clue till morning sickness set in around 6 weeks. I only tested because my period didn't show up, with absolutely no other symptoms to give any clue.

Not only do I hope you're already pregnant with a healthy baby, but I hope you have as few symptoms as possible throughout a joyful, healthy pregnancy just to spite your friend.

Exactly this!!

P.S. Another person here who had ZERO symptoms before missed AF (two pregnancies). Your friend is talking out her 🍑

StripyHorse · 03/09/2024 16:21

YANBU. I was nervous that at my 12 week scan it would turn out that I wasn't pregnant, because I didn't have morning sickness, I didn't have a bump, and had no other symptoms. I felt like a fraud even though I had had a positive test. That baby is currently sitting on the sofa searching for University Open days.

I had very few symptoms with DD2 as well.

Mandylovescandy · 03/09/2024 16:21

First time I knew before my period was due though couldn't have pointed at any symptoms but my body just felt different. Second and third times had no idea until I tested.

YouveGotAFastCar · 03/09/2024 16:23

I had no symptoms at all with my son, all the way until 36 weeks when my ankles swelled a bit from moving house. I started to get a bit achey around then, too. I never had nausea, sickness, tiredness, sore boobs, etc.

Totally different this time around 😅

She's wrong. Perhaps it was true for her, but it's not a rule by any means.

SatinHeart · 03/09/2024 16:27

I had zero symptoms with my first apart from the lack of periods.

popsick · 03/09/2024 16:37

I had zero symptoms and combined with a bleed every 28 days and no weight gain etc didn't know I was pregnant until 6 months.

MattSmithsBowTie · 03/09/2024 16:55

I had every symptom imaginable and I knew before I even did the test, however I also know that other peoples experiences are different, I know people who’ve never had a whiff of nausea, some who’ve had periods even though they were pregnant and one woman who didn’t even know she was pregnant until about 8 months despite being a size 6!

the symptoms i had before my missed period were also symptoms of a period soooooo how does she explain that

DazedAndConfused321 · 03/09/2024 17:24

Do you really think billions and billions of babies have been conceived with exactly the same symptoms? Every experience is different, yours might be without symptoms. Your friend is a fool and should be quiet and supportive if she doesn't know what she's talking about!

I'm currently 7 weeks. I had absolutely no symptoms until about a week after my missed period. Ignore her. Everyone's different

Doggymummar · 03/09/2024 17:36

My friend gave birth at work. We were waitresses in about 1990. She had no clue she was pregnant no symptoms and regrettably no idea who the father might be! We were 17 and away from home for the first time, so it's perfectly fair to say you might not know.

mondaytosunday · 03/09/2024 17:57

Well my mums carer almost had her baby in my mother's bathroom. She didn't have a bump (she was about two stone overweight but also tall), bled monthly throughout and any pains or niggles she put down to her usual cycle. She felt poorly that day and went to the bathroom... next stop the hospital where she had a lovely little girl!

yeesh · 03/09/2024 18:01

I didn’t have any symptoms at all for my whole pregnancy. We are all different

Acommonreader · 03/09/2024 18:04

Fingers crossed for you! My parents friend went into labour without knowing she was pregnant so definitely a possibility to not know! I also had no symptoms though my entire pregnancy except being the size of a bus. No sickness, fatigue, cravings - nothing. Good luck x
