To think I don’t have too many jeans?

chickenshopdate · 02/09/2024 12:33

My partner and I are moving to a slightly bigger house but we want to not bring across what we don’t need.

I have a shelf of around 28 pairs of trousers, mostly jeans and a couple of trousers for the office. He said I should cut down by half as some I’ve never worn. I really don’t think what I have is excessive. Aibu?

I’ve got loads of trousers but not that many pairs of jeans as I just don’t really like them. So I have 4 pairs of jeans but they’re all very different styles.

I do have way too many gym leggings but I do go 6 times a week and you can only get one wear out each time whereas jeans get at least 3 wears.

Why have 4 if you don’t like them? Ido like them and wear them most of the time all winter and I have 3 pairs…

HowNowBrownCow2 · 02/09/2024 16:26

In normal circumstances I'd say it was excessive however I do also own far too many pairs and can completely understand how it happens.
I have black jeans in skinny and wide leg and a pair of ripped. Then have various shades of blue jeans in various shapes/lengths etc. There are some I only wear in winter and others only in summer etc. I've tried to get rid of some but there's always a reason to keep them. Oh and I have my fat day jeans which are a size bigger for those days where I'm bloated and don't want to be panicking that I've nothing to wear.

Mintgum · 02/09/2024 13:40

I'm what you would call an extreme minimalist.
I only have 4 cups bowls etc.
2 pots one wok bedding one one one off.
1 large bed small chest of drawers 3 chairs in my living room small coffee table no TV.
Kettle only on show in my kitchen small fridge freezer washing machine and a cooker.
Mop and broom.
No clutter not sentimental either.
I don't have to get up to tell anyone what I have when I already know.

But what if you have 5 people over?

I would love to see photos of the three chairs.

I would get rid of stuff that isn't worn and am looking forward to decluttering when we move. I have 2 pairs of jeans (hardly ever wear them) and mainly wear one of my 4 pairs of leggings.

Shezlong · 02/09/2024 16:55

I have 12 pairs of jeans (I've just done a wardrobe purge so I know exactly how many) but jeans are all I wear outside of work. No dresses, leggings, joggers or skirts, so I don't think that's too bad in that case. I had about 12 more in various sizes but I was ruthless with getting rid of ones that don't quite fit any more,
as you have ones you haven't ever worn, that's clearly too many. Why haven't you worn them and how long have you had them?

DancingLions · 02/09/2024 16:55

I don't like wearing jeans generally so I only have one pair. That said, I have about 8 pairs of jeggings, 6 leggings, 6 tracksuit bottoms (for wfh) and 4 pairs summer trousers oh and one pair of smart trousers.

I didn't think I had many clothes. They all fit in a single wardrobe and large chest of drawers. But reading some of the responses here, it seems like I do! I put on a ton of weight due to peri and had to start over from scratch. So I've not wanted to buy too much in the bigger size as I'm (desperately) hoping to shift the weight.

I don't have a lot of people come over.
2 close friends and my sister.
They never come at the same time.
My chair's ones a fabulous recliner a wing back rocking chair and a tub chair.

YankSplaining · 02/09/2024 17:05

You are in second place for “non-celebrity I have heard of with the most jeans.” First place is my cousin, who went on a shopping binge and bought around a hundred pairs shortly before she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Unless maybe you have a concrete plan for when you’ll wear them in the next couple months, you don’t need clothes you’ve never worn. Cut the number in half and you’ll still have a pretty wide selection to choose from.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 02/09/2024 17:05

Why have you got loads of trousers you've never worn?! Confused

You have one pair of legs! That's way too many jeans

PetrichorSoul · 02/09/2024 17:06

I’ve got 4 pairs.

Two blue, one black and one cream pair.

You have too many.

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 02/09/2024 17:07

Surely the only real answer is to keep the ones you wear and get rid of the ones you don’t.

YellowphantGrey · 02/09/2024 17:12

Depends if you wear them all and if you don't, why

For example if I find a pair that fits well, then I buy another pair so that I've got a back up or in a different colour.

I've got work jeans x 4 pairs 4 pairs of wide leg jeans, 2 pairs of flare jeans and 2 pairs of straight leg jeans. I wear them all but not the duplicates until the others are worn out

Are the amount of jeans you have really going to take up that much space? If you don't wear them either sell or donate but don't feel forced into getting rid of clothes you don't want to.

I have 8 outfits.
2 sets of PJ's.

8 outfits?

I'm aiming for a reduced wardrobe and shoe collection. What's the basis of your outfits (colours etc)

TheActualAudacity · 02/09/2024 17:46

Light blue denim
Dark blue denim
Black denim
Cream denim
Skinny
Baggy
Straight
Flared
Boyfriend
Bootcut
Ripped
Cropped
Work jeans
Weekend jeans
Evening jeans

Multiple crossovers (so cream and blue flares, cream and blue boyfriend etc) so it soon adds up.

And then there’s my linen trouser collection.

With 8 outfits I just mixs them up.
I have 3leggings 2jeans 2cotton trousers 1 jumpsuit.
2 white tops 2 black 2 blue 1 red 1 yellow.
2hoodies 1 cardigan 1 jumper pair of snug boots trainers and flats.
I only keep what I wear if I buy any new clothes etc a top a top will then be cut up and used as cleaning cloths.

I take it they are all mix and match too?

I've cleared out things that only go with one thing so far and that's left me with less clothes but I think I could do more. I'm aiming eventually to get to a point where everything is worn and not just the same few outfits because there's too much choice

Shoes and books are my weakness though!

Cherrysoup · 02/09/2024 18:59

I have 4 pairs of jeans, one camo jeans, probably about 8 pairs of smart trousers for work, plus some leggings. I think 20 odd pairs is excessive, particularly if you don’t wear them. I’ve lived in my jeans over the summer. I echo selling on Vinted (maybe I can buy more!)

Jeans:
Urban Outfitters patchwork
Skater style pale blue
Pull&Bear half and half lengthwise pale blue and blue
Vintage style extra long raw hem cargoes

I have 2.5 wardrobes of clothes and two full chest of drawers and a full rail in the spare bedroom. And that’s not including said jeans that are organised on an open shelf in the dressing room.

I just love creating outfits. I’m quite social so maybe that’s why. I should clear out more really.

I went up a size after my pregnancy. And I’m maybe carrying an extra 10lbs (lost 7lbs so not wanting to rush it). Some clothes were bought before pregnancy just because I liked them and intended to get back to my original size.

Sometimes i`ll wear the red top with jeans or with leggings i switch up nothing as to be bland and boring.
I love books but i only get second hand ones when ive read that book ill take it to a charity shop before i buy the next.
It takes time to get used to new things and living different ive done it for years so its normal.
With any decluttering i say get brutal.
There is an old thread that i read on here by miss december i think that says she had a massive declutter worth a read it pretty much what id years ago ive never looked back.
Ive saved a small fortune.

I’m social too but there are only so many days in a week to wear different outfits!

Dolliesdisasterousdayout · 02/09/2024 19:05

How can it not be excessive op? It’s crazy! All jeans?

@Mintgum adopt me!

bakewellbride · 02/09/2024 19:54

Oh god! I have one cheap pair of jeggings that has just got some holes and needs repairing.

28 is insane.

KreedKafer · 03/09/2024 11:13

Everyone can stop competing to be the person with the fewest clothes now; we've all seen enough 'I only own one pair of trousers made from an old flour sack in 1979, who even needs anything more' comments at this point.

OP, I don't think the issue is how many clothes you own, just that you have lots of things you've never worn. If you were getting wear out of all 28 pairs of jeans/trousers and enjoying wearing them, that would be fine, but it sounds like you're buying a lot of new stuff all the time instead of creating outfits from the stuff you've already got in your wardrobe. Or getting seduced by the idea that 'THIS pair will definitely be my perfect jeans...' and then not being quite happy with them and seeing another pair next week that you are convinced will be MORE perfect, and never being satisfied. I say this mainly because I am very guilty of doing exactly this!
