To think I don’t have too many jeans?

My partner and I are moving to a slightly bigger house but we want to not bring across what we don’t need.

I have a shelf of around 28 pairs of trousers, mostly jeans and a couple of trousers for the office. He said I should cut down by half as some I’ve never worn. I really don’t think what I have is excessive. Aibu?

@chickenshopdate

the number of pairs of jeans you have isn't the issue here.

you are going to have a serious row with your partner unless you sort out the decluttering rules. Discuss the 'rules' and agree on them.

Personally I'd go with each of us decluttering as much of our stuff as we can, but keeping our beaks out of the other ones stuff.

shared stuff, both put to one side what you'd be happy to get rid of, but the other one can reclaim if they want to.

How do you guys know how many pairs of everything you have? Did you just go and count in response to this thread? Do you keep a spreadsheet?

I'm what you would call an extreme minimalist.
I only have 4 cups bowls etc.
2 pots one wok bedding one one one off.
1 large bed small chest of drawers 3 chairs in my living room small coffee table no TV.
Kettle only on show in my kitchen small fridge freezer washing machine and a cooker.
Mop and broom.
No clutter not sentimental either.
I don't have to get up to tell anyone what I have when I already know.

Nice. I am not!

tennesseewhiskey1 · 02/09/2024 13:44

i don't even want to say how many i have as I'm embarrassed, but its more than you do. I need to get rid of loads.

Channellingsophistication · 02/09/2024 13:47

I think thats a lot, i’ve probably got 10 pairs in total. But this will cheer you, my friend when she moved into her new house counted her pairs of jeans there were 52!!!

elrider · 02/09/2024 13:53

I mostly wear jeans, though leggings if I'm not leaving the house. I recently bought more jeans so now have 4 pairs, plus 2 leggings. That feels like plenty to me! 28 is excessive. I wouldn't even have the space to store more than about 8.

MysweetAudrina · 02/09/2024 13:59

It does seem a lot but I'm not a Jean wearer. I have about 30 pairs of yoga pants though so I'm not judging.

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 02/09/2024 14:01

If you've never worn many of them, then yes, you have to many pairs.

Stravaig · 02/09/2024 14:08

Just representing for the zero jeans folk.

Wentie · 02/09/2024 14:12

Personally I think that is loads, but that doesn’t matter, it’s whatever feels right to you.

I have 4 pairs of leggings (leisure wear rather than black cotton, 2 summer weight and 2 winter fleecy lined)
2 pairs jeggings
2 pairs jeans

BUT I’ve just realised I have about 8 pyjama bottoms of various thickness 😆 so not as minimal as I’d thought

ChaoticCrumble · 02/09/2024 14:17

I always wonder if I have too many clothes or not enough space for the clothes?

The issue is that women are expected to have so many different types of clothes for different occasions - while it's a lot easier for men. I have nice dresses I only wear for weddings/special occasions, so it's easier to go a year without wearing them, but I don't want to chuck them.

I have smart trousers for office wear, casual trousers, lounge wear type trousers, cords for winter, linen for summer, plus dungarees and shorts. Only two pairs of jeans but I prob do have 28 pairs of trousers! I could live with less, but I appreciate having a choice.

AdoraBell · 02/09/2024 14:20

Well I’ve currently only got 1 pair, so I’m saying 28 pairs is too much 🤣 but, YANBU if you want/need that many. Could you store them away, maybe under the bed/bottom of wardrobe?

kwetu · 02/09/2024 14:24

OldTinHat · 02/09/2024 12:38

How many pairs?!

I live in jeans. I have a blue pair and a black pair. One in the wash, one on me.

Ditto

Lourdes12 · 02/09/2024 14:31

That's way too many. I have 2 pairs of jeans and no other trousers. I guess it depends if you wear all of them regularly which I doubt. I would limit them to 10 that you really like and wear often

Lourdes12 · 02/09/2024 14:33

Sounds a it like you have a hoarding issue with jeans. Why do you have jeans you have never worn?

sweetpickle2 · 02/09/2024 14:34

No amount is too many if you wear them all, which you admit you don't. So it excessive.

Pipecleanerrevival · 02/09/2024 14:34

It’s not excessive at all. (For a Kardashian.)

ClivetheDestroyer · 02/09/2024 14:35

28 pairs???!!!
I have too many clothes and I have:

  • black jeans
  • blue jeans
  • light blue jeans
  • black jeggings
  • cords
  • 3 x tracksuit bottoms (I work from home!)
  • about 6 pairs of leggings (mostly black and navy, a couple of short ones)
  • running leggings
  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • white linen trousers
so I make that about 18 pairs of "bottoms" total and that's still too many really
momtoboys · 02/09/2024 14:36

28 pairs?? Wow! I think I have 3 but I pay very little attention to anything clothing related.

Suzuki70 · 02/09/2024 14:38

I have about 12 pairs which is enough, in my opinion, even as a constant jeans wearer. Couple of pairs of black skinnies, 3 barrel leg, 2 wide leg, some straight leg, some grey ones, a pair of embroidered ones... You must have a fair few repeat "slots".

Ineedaholidayyyy · 02/09/2024 15:00

It does sound like a lot . I have about 6 pairs of jeans, 3 cargo type trousers , 1 pair of everyday leggings and 1 pair or smart work trousers ( I WFH) I also have a few pairs of workout leggings , but they are only worn for the gym.

I do a clear out at the end of every summer and winter, anything that hasn't been worn within the last 6-12 months I either sell or hand to charity. It's a great way of keeping my wardrobe fresh and up to date.

TheGoogleMum · 02/09/2024 15:02

That is a lot of jeans. Many unworn suggests that actually you do have more than you need!

I think 2-4 pairs is about right?

southpawsofthenorth · 02/09/2024 15:15

I have 11 pairs of jeans but tbh that’s because when I find a type that fits well I buy 2 extra pairs or a couple of different colours. I imagine it will be a while before I have to buy anymore

angelcake20 · 02/09/2024 15:50

I have 3 pairs of jeans that I usually wear but also several pairs that are currently too small, several pairs of walking trousers, a couple of work trousers, some cropped jeans, loose summer cotton and linen trousers, so probably more than 28 in total and I'm not at all interested in clothes and don't dress up much.

ManchesterGirl2 · 02/09/2024 15:58

Yes it seems a lot to me. What do you need them for?

I've got three pairs of jeans, plus several pairs of shorts, and various sports trousers.
