well, yeah, obviously! I don't think that needed explaining. I don't think OP ACTUALLY thought anyone posting that was really believed there was a possibility they were the only ones this had ever happened to, because the majority of the posts worded thus are so utterly commonplace you'd have to be a complete idiot ("Has anyone been on holiday to France?" "Does anyone not drive?" to actually query if you were the only one
OP was presumably just pointing out that it's a fatuitous way to start a post. Which I agree, because it is (or at least I also find it) very annoying, and presumably if people have gone to the effort of posting about something they want others to reply, rather than eye-roll and scroll by.
MN is very busy with hundreds of posts a day on the busy threads, therefore it's always better to be as specific as possible if you want helpful responses rather than people jumping on to snark, "no, you're the only person to ever own a cat ever" (or similar).
If you want advice on loneliness maybe start a thread called "I'm really struggling with loneliness" or "how can I stop feeling so lonely?" or "need a hand hold - feeling lonely," not "has anyone else ever felt lonely?"
If they want to complain about the COL or want advice on saving money start a post with "Thread to complain about the COL" or "Who else is really struggling with the COL?" rather than "Is anyone struggling with money?"
If you want tips on buying a house in a particular area of London, start a thread saying that, not "Does anyone live in London?"
Yes it's a bit thread-police-y to complain about how people word their OPs but there have been far more minor/pedantic threads.
why bother wording a post in a way that you hope most people will 'know what you mean,' when you can just....actually write exactly what you mean????
