AIBU to believe that the cost of living crisis is a load of nonsense

So I wake up this morning to find that 14 million people are trying for Oasis tickets. A mediocre rock band and a “reunion” tour just to create a retirement fund for two already multi-millionaires.

The question is - where are so many people getting the money from to buy tickets? On one hand people moan about the “cost of living” but can easily find £500 to fund this nonsense.

Madness.

People should stop moaning about the cost of living if they can waste money on things like this. They are either getting too much income from their job/benefits (if they can afford this) to complain about “cost of living” or they should stop moaning about increasing food/fuel prices!

Rant over!

@MaryWils24 yes I have read it, I just meant that even though you can afford tickets, did you make a similar post when Taylor Swift sold out?

LoggedOutAgain · 31/08/2024 10:56

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:49

@CraftyNavySeal Well there is the base ticket price, then the cost of getting there, merchandise, food at the stadium, maybe a hotel. It all adds up.

We live in London. Taylor Swift cost us minimal extra. A short tube ride. Drank tap water, no drinks bought. And no merch. Just the ticket price of £110. Still a lot of money but we could afford it.

The cost of living has gone up for everybody. But it affects different people differently. For the worst affected they can’t afford to eat or heat homes. For us, we have stopped eating at places like Pret. For others it will be that they can’t afford new cars.

I see the expensive restaurants in central London full all the time with people eating out. It doesn’t mean that there is no cost-of-living crisis in the country though.

It’s a silly argument. But you know that.

Such a cool girl, you are.

not in the slightest

CostelloJones · 31/08/2024 10:56

I am one of those people who is after (still trying to get) tickets - and complaining/ actively campaigning about COL.

not because I am personally struggling with it, although I do think the rate that some bills have gone up is appalling, but because I see those who are struggling with the COLC. It’s called empathy? Wanting more for society? Social justice?

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 10:57

@5128gap Don’t be. I’m doing just fine. I travel often - have been to 30 Countries so far and have trips booked to Jordan, China and Japan in the next six months. But I am NOT moaning about a “cost of living crisis”.

My question in this thread is how can so many who are suddenly find the funds for Oasis tickets?

@FatmanandKnobbin Well you have said that you are “dirt poor” so unless you are happy with that, it may make sense for you to spend your money on something that will help you increase your income in the long run, rather than blow it on one concert.

I'm in the middle of doing a degree whilst recovering from cancer and a stroke and caring for my dd who is disabled.

I think I deserve some fun. Even if you don't.

Who on earth do you think you are telling people what life choices to make??

Exactly. You're unbearable.

EveningSpread · 31/08/2024 10:57

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:39

Well it is true. If millions of people can buy tickets for Oasis then they can easily pay a bit more for their food and fuel without moaning.

So we can only complain about rising costs once nobody can afford anything other than the bare essentials? I’m glad you’re not in charge OP!

You sound so miserable and bitter.

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 10:59

@FatmanandKnobbin I’m sorry to hear that. Best wishes for your recovery.

@Covidwoes Have you actually read my post? I can AFFORD tickets without needing to moan about the cost of living. My question is to how on earth so many who do moan have suddenly found money for tickets?

Ask them? I don’t know anybody like this.

3luckystars · 31/08/2024 11:00

Maybe a lot of people are buying the tickets from abroad also.

The groceries etc are gone very expensive, that’s true, but I agree this concert madness and tickets is getting completely out of hand.

Shakeoffyourchains · 31/08/2024 11:00

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:39

Well it is true. If millions of people can buy tickets for Oasis then they can easily pay a bit more for their food and fuel without moaning.

If millions of people can afford a one off treat that they'll potentially pay off over the next year or so then they can all afford their food, fuel, heating and electricity bills to more than double permanently?

Rock solid logic there OP.

priorities innit, some people would rather go and see Oasis in the UK than increasing their carbon footprint travelling abroad to places like Jordan, China and Japan

QuestionableMouse · 31/08/2024 11:01

Yes, the £800 UC I get a month is really funding a lavish lifestyle. I'm off to my private island next.

JosieB68 · 31/08/2024 11:01

Over 66 million people live in the UK… you’re talking utter nonsense.

merryhouse · 31/08/2024 10:56

And you just have to let everyone know don’t you? All these people, collectively excited about something but you, being so cool and kooky, just have to tell everyone how you think their lead singer is shit because you’re so ✨different✨

Honestly, I don’t get why people like you do this. They do it over Taylor Swift too. It’s embarrassing to witness.

DadJoke · 31/08/2024 11:02

This is one of the most dim-witted, facile, right-wing rants I’ve ever seen on mn.

Hysterical! 🤣

It’s fine - from the sounds of it OP can probably afford to carbon offset.

You can do what you like when you’re rich, but dare say you can’t afford something and you get the Spanish Inquisition about that coffee you bought from Pret last week.

same double standard as ever

joelion · 31/08/2024 11:03

I could afford Oasis (or Taylor Swift) tickets but I won't buy them. I don't think ill of those who do; it takes all sorts.

But the cost of living crisis? It's not mythical because some of us are relatively well off. Rather it's real enough and caused by the level of inequality of income and wealth in this country. Some people can't afford food for their kids; some people can afford private jets.

Solve the cost of living crisis? Try redistributing income and wealth, little by little. How? Taxation. Start at the top, with increase of CGT (not many of those who can't afford to feed their children have much in the way of capital gains, I'd hazard). Then continue with other redistributive taxes.

OK, grow the economy too. But reduce inequality as a priority.

Oasis? If they're more than averagely wealthy, tax them. Otherwise leave them alone.

Squirrelsnut · 31/08/2024 11:03

Pandasnacks · 31/08/2024 09:43

Isn't there around 66 million people in the UK? Did you think all of them were claiming to suffer from the cost of living crisis? I don't like Oasis either and don't get the hype over them at all, but your post lacks so basic understanding of the economy. The poorest won't have been buying tickets.

This. Why are you assuming people in poverty (which is depressingly NOT made up, btw) are the ones buying tickets? Is it an assumption about the social class of Oasis fans?

OhMaria2 · 31/08/2024 11:03

OriginalUsername2 · 31/08/2024 11:04

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:42

@AgnesX Yeah true. A lot of credit cards getting hammered today.

You have to wonder about some people’s financial stupidity. Happy to buy tickets they can’t afford (funding a millionaire’s retirement) yet will accrue interest on that same credit card when they can’t afford the repayments. And then moan about a cost of living.

I bet a lot of people who moan about the cost of living only have themselves blame through wasteful spending like this.

You’re just making stuff up in your mind tbh.

Cantgetausername87 · 31/08/2024 11:04

I mean @MaryWils24 you're a bit dim, and clearly not someone who is being hit with the COL crisis.
Like many people have said, it won't be people queuing for foodbanks who are getting the tickets.
But just to put your mind at rest, most of the people won't be people at all - there will be lots of bots as there always is scooping up the tickets to sell on.
Whats your problem with oasis anyway? Have a pop at Taylor swift fans and football fans too!
