AIBU to believe that the cost of living crisis is a load of nonsense

So I wake up this morning to find that 14 million people are trying for Oasis tickets. A mediocre rock band and a “reunion” tour just to create a retirement fund for two already multi-millionaires.

The question is - where are so many people getting the money from to buy tickets? On one hand people moan about the “cost of living” but can easily find £500 to fund this nonsense.

Madness.

People should stop moaning about the cost of living if they can waste money on things like this. They are either getting too much income from their job/benefits (if they can afford this) to complain about “cost of living” or they should stop moaning about increasing food/fuel prices!

Rant over!

these poor people dragging you to concerts 😂

Bearpawk · 31/08/2024 10:46

What a ridiculous post.
People are affected to a various degree, as with anything in life.
All of my bills and costs have gone up and we can't afford to upsize when our mortgage term ends this year due to interest rates significantly increasing. Can't afford to upgrade our car which was the plan this year.
We do, however have enough in the bank to buy oasis tickets or a holiday or whatever we feel like, on occasion. Just not every month.

@Ihopeithinkiknow I don’t get why you don’t use that money for something more meaningful that could lift yourself from your current predicament. Maybe instead of saving for an Oasis reunion (funding millionaires) you could save up for something that will actually help you lift yourself up - like an emergency fund for food, rent or interview clothing.

Life is not all that bad. If you have a smartphone and a pair of earphones you can go onto YouTube and listen to your favourite band in a field without wasting hundreds in the process.

Did Liam reject you or something? You’ve got such an Oasis shaped chip on your shoulder.

Do you shop at Tesco or Sainsbury’s? Amazon? Or use a British Gas? Because you’re funding billionaires. And Oasis are millionaires not billionaires.

What music do you like OP? I’m sure some of the makers of it are extremely affluent so you’ll have to unlike them.

So almost 67 million living in the UK and 14 million of them have no music taste ... honestly I thought the figure was higher..

I hated Oasis from word go almost broke dh and I up..

I woild have loved to take dd to the Eras tour. It would have been a dream come.true for her.. however our finances didn't allow that. And I unlike many am not allowing that to go to a. Credit card. 10 years ago I could have afforded it.

I'm not on the breadline having to live of food banks etc but expensive music tickets are off the menu at the moment for us. I hope that will change..

Edited

The irony in stating oasis fans have no taste in music and then stating you'd have liked to see Taylor Swift.

Ok then 😂

Good grief. I bet you're fun at dinner parties.

Or does your mum get invited instead?

I can't imagine so. The OP will be sat at home listening to you tube with ear phones on while spitting foam on mumsnet about what other people choose to spend their hard earned cash on.

I might be wrong about this many people for tickets could be overseas too. A ton of people going to the TS concerts were from abroad and making weekends of it

Yes to this as well^
and it’s about demographic and also for some people it might go as their birthday/ Christmas present.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 31/08/2024 10:47

The use of the word crisis is overplayed, such that it’s become almost meaningless,

Undoubtedly some people are really feeling the impact of rising prices and have really felt it. But other data shows that many many more people are not. Restaurants are busier than they’ve been for ages, every flight I’ve been on this year has been busy, and airport lounges are busier that they’ve been for ages. Airplanes, retailers and holiday companies are all doing very well indeed.

JeremiahBullfrog · 31/08/2024 10:47

Why are so many people claiming to be homeless? There are some really fancy houses round here.

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 10:48

@FatmanandKnobbin How much did you pay for those tickets? You sound like one of those many people I am acquainted with (many old classmates) who need to reevaluate their life priorities.

Instead of spending that money on tickets, why don’t you use it to invest in yourself. Use it to learn a skill - or a new language, or anything - to make yourself more employable. In the long term it will pay off by increasing your income - much more so than spending two hours in a field queuing up for the nearest portaloo.

Only if we also apply that to deserving and undeserving rich as well.

EXACTLY this.

daliesque · 31/08/2024 10:48

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 10:40

@daliesque No - I am pissed about waiting in this queue. I have plenty of money, but wouldn’t choose to spend it on this. After seeing so many people moan about the cost of living, and then these same people post about getting in this queue and buying tickets, I am annoyed to be forced to queue behind so many people who are so financially illiterate.

You really are a misery aren't you. Hope your mum gets her tickets and enjoys rubbing your sour face in it 😁

Crikeyalmighty · 31/08/2024 10:48

Some people spend money on high end houses, some on going to the pub 4 times a week , some on holidays and yes some spend on concerts- some lucky buggers spend on all these. It's not compulsory- things like fuel, council tax, food , housing, transport etc are more 'compulsory'

Covidwoes · 31/08/2024 10:49

@MaryWils24 would you say the same about Taylor Swift?

My friend also got Oasis tickets on presale yesterday for £75 each. Not £500.

Who on earth do you think you are telling people what life choices to make??

@YouveGotAFastCar I’ve also heard Liam sing recently

my deepest sympathy

CostelloJones · 31/08/2024 10:51

Yeah my sister went to Barbados this year so Sandra down the street shouldn’t moan about struggling to keep up with the price of food for her kids. Or her heating bills.

completely different things.

catch yourself on

Besttimelftheyear · 31/08/2024 10:51

There is a cost of living crisis because wages haven't risen inline with inflation. Mortgages, rent, fuel, food is all very high. It's as simple as that.

Some people won't have been affected as badly by the COLC do they can afford Oasis tickets, or maybe some people can't afford the tickets but are going into debt for them.

Why is that difficult to understand?

mondaytosunday · 31/08/2024 10:51

OP there are over 64m people living in the UK, and I dare say that a significant amount are doing just grand. But a significant amount are not. You could equally say 'people are going on holiday - therefore no COL crisis'. Or, 'people own cars, therefore no COL crisis. Get it?

🤣 you have precisely zero idea about my life or employability.

Don't let you're stereotyping get in the way of reality though.

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 10:52

@Covidwoes Have you actually read my post? I can AFFORD tickets without needing to moan about the cost of living. My question is to how on earth so many who do moan have suddenly found money for tickets?

OP posts:
snakewillow · 31/08/2024 10:53

Being able and willing to afford gig tickets and also not happy about the price we have to pay for things so companies can declare millions in profit is entirely possible. Not everyone complaining about the cost of living will be severely impacted by it. That does not mean that there aren't millions of people who genuinely are struggling.

5128gap · 31/08/2024 10:53

I do genuinely feel a bit sorry for you OP if you really don't understand the joy that can be had from an experience. That life is short and is about more than sensible survival and hoarding the pennies. I picture you gazing from the outside in at people having the time of their lives, then scurrying home to purse your lips and count your beans and think you're the one who's got it sussed.

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 10:54

@FatmanandKnobbin Well you have said that you are “dirt poor” so unless you are happy with that, it may make sense for you to spend your money on something that will help you increase your income in the long run, rather than blow it on one concert.

Another person that doesn't understand what a COL crisis means.

The definition is a socioeconomic situation/period of high inflation where wages haven't kept up with the increase in costs of basic goods which enable people to live: housing, food, fuel, so living standards are squeezed and nearly everyone has a poorer standard of living than previously. Which means some people are thrown into poverty or financial struggles whereas other just have less disposable income.

Nobody ever said it meant everyone must be living in poverty or if not, just have no disposable income.
