AIBU to believe that the cost of living crisis is a load of nonsense

So I wake up this morning to find that 14 million people are trying for Oasis tickets. A mediocre rock band and a “reunion” tour just to create a retirement fund for two already multi-millionaires.

The question is - where are so many people getting the money from to buy tickets? On one hand people moan about the “cost of living” but can easily find £500 to fund this nonsense.

Madness.

People should stop moaning about the cost of living if they can waste money on things like this. They are either getting too much income from their job/benefits (if they can afford this) to complain about “cost of living” or they should stop moaning about increasing food/fuel prices!

Rant over!

Yes, get into debt all you want. Just don’t rely on my taxes to bail you out, or whinge about a cost of living crisis when it is your fault you got into debt.

You know it's not like sponsoring a child right?

You don't get assigned a benefit claimant and they send you a photo and a letter every couple of months telling you what they spent 'your' money on.

Your taxes probably don't even cover what you take back tbh.

If it makes you feel any better, this month 'your' hard earned taxes bought me a lamp in the shape of a hippo and some totally unnescessary wallpaper just because I fancied a change, so thanks for that op ❤️ couldn't buy that kind of tat in a voucher system.

It must be so difficult for you to solely pay for everyone's benefits, it sounds exhausting being so far up your own arse you poor thing

She still has time and money to piss around all over the world. It's a hard life.

ODFOD. Ermmm….I definitely feel the COL situation as a single parent on an average wage. I wouldn’t buy Oasis tickets but I go out, n as I used to, but I buy theatre, concert and cinema tickets. As a general rule, I save to do that, or I dip into my savings because fuck me, I deserve the occasional treat.

midgetastic · 31/08/2024 15:37

@fisherhatesgravel72

I'd guess renting in London - cheapest areas would still be 1500 a month in rent - average rent is over 2k a month

Then 400 a month for decent healthy diet

Then transport, gas and electric and council tax

Why would you change the wallpaper just because you “fancied a change” though? That’s so wasteful. You could have better have saved that money for a genuine “rainy day” if times got hard. Did you really NEED to change your wallpaper? If it was dirty then I guess so, but otherwise it may have been better to save that for a genuine emergency.

I read that many people don’t have £500 in savings for an emergency in the UK. If people didn’t make unnecessary changes like this and saved, they may be more resilient in a genuine crisis (e.g price increases).

Wasteful is flying on holiday and harming the planet - that's a lot more wasteful than new paper to make your living environment happier

For goodness sake, benefits should be a minimum safety net. For food, heat and medical essentials only. If benefits can fund lavish decorations then obviously they are far too high.

So in your world people with less money should just be in the poorhouse basically

Well at very least they should be doing everything they can to upskill and improve their situation themselves.

I thought you would have understood, what with all the bragging you've done on this thread about the stuff you've done just because you fancied it.

Poor people don't deserve new wallpaper is a new one on me. Maybe I should route around bins for newspapers people don't want and pritt stick them to my walls instead.

There was absolutely no need for you to tell us you're a tory voter, it's glaringly obvious.

Oh that is marvellous!
Edited to say a quick look at the website and it's all 'boring lamp, boring lamp boring lamp, Hippo' so that's a good find.

OK so assuming you're not a troll and are genuinely a bit thick let me ask how you think people should do that?

Someone has a car accident and can't work- they're entitled to basic heating and food, nothing else. Is that fair?
Someone has a disabled child and works 24/7 caring for them saving 'you' money by not having them with a full time carer.
Someone loses their job, they apply for every job they can but there's not enough jobs, they can't afford to study, can't afford transport to get to interviews because they just have heat and food.
Basic food and heat but expected to study, travel for work, start a business, do whatever to help themselves with literally no funds to do so.

You do realise that if people are on benefits it's almost always because they are ill or disabled and can't work, they are carers or they work but are too poorly paid to afford essentials? Are you really advocating that these people who are either very vulnerable or are engaged in essential but unpaid or poorly paid occupations like care work, retail, factories, agriculture, shouldn't have a pleasant home to sit in? They they should merely exist on a subsistence that pays for food and fuel? No pleasure, music, joy, just breathe in and out until they die? All because you know your neighbours friends cousin's boyfriend could work if he wanted but chooses not to, or whatever daft lie you believe about benefit claimants?

MeAgainAndAgain · 31/08/2024 15:56

Roll on Tuesday. Or Wednesday. Or whenever the schools are back.

OP, if you don’t like it, vote with your feet and tell mummy you don’t want to sit in a queue any more.

And do some reading about poverty, human beings, stuff like that. You might learn summat.

midgetastic · 31/08/2024 15:56

I suggest a week volunteering with a soup kitchen

My guess is minor private school education (one with no entrance exam clearly), leading to this patronising and frankly nasty attitude you have. I suspect you're probably quite young and have no idea what goes on in the real world.

And if this sounds harsh, then it's no worse than your dismissive and sneering attitude to those on benefits (most of whom are in work btw).

£400 a month for fresh food for 2? We spend max £70 a week and all decent stuff. I'm guessing that couple doesn't even exist. Nor the PP's barmaid who is struggling to feed her kids. Single families are well provided for by the state. My sister was a single of mum of 3 when her husband walked out and claimed benefits for a year. She says that's the most well off she's ever been been, well over 1k a month for food, utilities, clothing and running a small car as rent and council tax paid for.
