AIBU to believe that the cost of living crisis is a load of nonsense

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:36

So I wake up this morning to find that 14 million people are trying for Oasis tickets. A mediocre rock band and a “reunion” tour just to create a retirement fund for two already multi-millionaires.

The question is - where are so many people getting the money from to buy tickets? On one hand people moan about the “cost of living” but can easily find £500 to fund this nonsense.

Madness.

People should stop moaning about the cost of living if they can waste money on things like this. They are either getting too much income from their job/benefits (if they can afford this) to complain about “cost of living” or they should stop moaning about increasing food/fuel prices!

Rant over!

Well it is true. If millions of people can buy tickets for Oasis then they can easily pay a bit more for their food and fuel without moaning.

People are still able to buy things like Oasis tickets, lots of people do have disposable income and still be able to pay bills.
Lots of other people don't have any disposable money, and scrape by every month or struggle.
On account of we're not all the same person Confused

5128gap · 31/08/2024 11:34

And my question to you, and please don't dodge this, because its important, is how exactly could posters who are poor use the ticket money to get a higher income as you suggested? Because I'm not going to see Oasis, they're not my cup of tea. So how could I use the money I'm not spending to increase my income? I'm not poor, but wouldn't say no to a bit more affluence. So, how do I get that from £200 please?

Because the wealthier own the poor, didn’t you know? They can dictate what they do with their lives and how they spend their money. And they need to get back down the coal mines in their spare time to earn enough pittance to buy their bread.

gardenmusic · 31/08/2024 12:00

Do you get banned if you just write 'Tosser' on a post?

@5128gap Don’t be. I’m doing just fine. I travel often - have been to 30 Countries so far and have trips booked to Jordan, China and Japan in the next six months. But I am NOT moaning about a “cost of living crisis”.

My question in this thread is how can so many who are suddenly find the funds for Oasis tickets?

We get it, you are happy to be fleeced in the shops as you can afford it and have very little empathy. I only wished you'd meant it when you said rant over.

LadyGrinningSoul8517 · 31/08/2024 10:46

The irony in stating oasis fans have no taste in music and then stating you'd have liked to see Taylor Swift.

Ok then 😂

@LadyGrinningSoul8517 read it again I said I'd have loved to take DD.

''I" want to go see La bohème for Christmas at the Royal Opera house. However CoL means I can't afford that either.

No, but elsewhere in this thread, you ARE moaning about taxation. Frankly, if you can afford to do all that, what are you worried about? One less holiday should cover it. Why wouldn't you prefer to put your money into the society you live in instead of spaffing it up the wall going abroad multiple times a year?

Now you are going to tell me you earned that money. What makes you think the people paying for Oasis tickets are on the breadline, apart from abject snobbery because it's Oasis?

People who moan about taxation when it isn't going to plunge them into penury really irk more, far more than someone spending money they've earned on tickets to see a band.

I pay my taxes willingly because I, too can go abroad on holiday and have a decent life. I am not whining about any possible increases. Why are you? Will you become destitute as a result? Doesn't sound like it.

justbeingasmartarse · 31/08/2024 12:02

This is third thread referencing the new Oasis tour I’ve read this morning 😆 Quite the social touchstone

Emiliasmummy · 31/08/2024 12:05

I'm in the queue for tickets I can afford them they are not going on credit I'm not rich. I am also affected by the col. I can afford to absorb most increases but it is more of a struggle than ever. Im allowed to complain this situation was not of my doing and I, like everyone else do not want to spend all my money on food, heating etc I want to enjoy life. You are coming across so ignorant not everyone that complains is on the breadline but even if they were it is really none of your business how people spend their money.

Mynewsofa · 31/08/2024 12:05

HMW1906 · 31/08/2024 11:34

The cost of living crisis isn’t affecting everyone you know?!

I’m trying to get tickets, we don’t struggle for money despite the cost of things going up, we’re comfortable. I’m sure this is a situation a lot of people in. The people who are struggling with the price of things going up are unlikely to be trying to get tickets I would imagine.

No. it is effecting everyone including you, you just aren't feeling the same financial impact.

A COL crisis affects everyone because it's where wages don't keep up with the cost of inflation and therefore the standard of living costs more now than a few years ago.

Which effects everyone equally but the financial impact is not equal when the population has different financial circumstances.

You are definitely paying more for housing (unless your house is paid off) food and fuel under the COL crisis. You just aren't struggling for money as a result.

OP is claiming the COL doesn't exist if people have disposable income to spend on concert tickets.

vivainsomnia · 31/08/2024 12:05

The vast majority of people in this country do manage just fine. A large part of them will moan about the CoL because it means they have to make choices they don't want to make so feel aggrieve, need to blame someone.

People go on more holidays, have more and newer cars, order food with deliveridoo, go out for drinks, splash on new clothes for occasions and go to concerts...but because after it all, they don't much to put in savings, they feel hard done by.

Say what you say, don't let anybody take (your place in the ticket queue) away.

@daliesque No - I am pissed about waiting in this queue. I have plenty of money, but wouldn’t choose to spend it on this. After seeing so many people moan about the cost of living, and then these same people post about getting in this queue and buying tickets, I am annoyed to be forced to queue behind so many people who are so financially illiterate.

Ah babes, you're right. You DESERVE the tickets more because you have more money Flowers

Thing is, we’re all joking but many wealthy people do genuinely feel this way. They would hate to mix with the less affluent.

DowntonCrabby · 31/08/2024 12:12

I love when threads like this pop up, MN would be boring without an occasional Mary.

PinkyFlamingo · 31/08/2024 12:14

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:47

To be honest, I’d rather my money go to Tesco or the Energy Companies than Oasis.

That's obvious. But you would have to be really dim or self centred to think that just because you don't like Oasis then others are stupid if they do.

Mynewsofa · 31/08/2024 12:19

Catdoorman · 31/08/2024 11:55

Are the 14 million people that want oasis tickets complaining about the cost of living specifically? If they are then they will likely make the adult decision to prioritise their spending, and not buy oasis tickets. I think it's highly likely that many millions more have at the very least 500 pounds to splurge on whatever they want. Its the millions of people without disposable income who are struggling and rightfully worried about the cost of living. Hope that explains it for you.

No, OP doesn't know that of course.

She/he/they is just one of those people and there are several on this thread, that a) doesn't understand that a COL crisis means everyone pays more to live and b) because of that ignorance thinks that some people spending money on concerts, restaurants or takeaways thinks that means there isn't a COL crisis.

Whereas we know millions of people can't afford those things because of the COL crisis and millions who couldn't afford it before the COL crisis.

They don't understand the meaning of the term or even the concept, let alone how different the consequences can be.

Whilst at the same time whining about a possible tax increase which will make a miniscule difference to their standard of living, but might massively improve someone else's.

Another person who just doesn't understand what a cost of living crisis is.

All these bizarre out of touch MN posters that think the vast majority of people are 'moaning' about the cost of living crisis because after all their holidays, new cars, nights out and clothes buying don't have much to save so feel hard done by. Lol.

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 31/08/2024 12:30

The OP’s got the hump as she’s doing her mum a favour queuing for tickets and doesn’t want to, it’s got nothing to do with COL crisis which OP has a weak grasp of.

Just think OP of all that extra money that’s going to be circulating when the gigs happen, brilliant for the economy. Well done Oasis.

Houseplanter · 31/08/2024 12:31

Oasis tickets are a red herring

There always has been and always will be those who are well off, and those who are in poverty.

There will also always be different things to spend your money on.

CostelloJones · 31/08/2024 12:32

Lifeomars · 31/08/2024 11:29

I hope you get them, I am not an Oasis fan but some of my happiest moments have been at gigs seeing my favourite bands. It lifts your spirits and lives in your memory forever. There is the thrill when you get the tickets, the countdown to the gig, the energy and anticipation when you arrive, the slight boredom while the support act is on and then the most amazing adrenaline rush as the main act takes to the stage! Nothing like a good live gig

Finally got through but only tickets left were £409 each so a bit over our budget - so that’s 4 hours of my life wasted 🤣😭

scalt · 31/08/2024 12:33

There is a parallel argument: there’s never any money to fix schools which are falling down, but always plenty for wars, lockdowns, millennium domes, HS2, cancelling HS2, MPs expenses and pay rises, subsidised bars in Parliament, legal defence for prime ministers who “didn’t know it was a party”, etc. 😀
