To wonder if it's me or my phone making me look completely illiterate.

I might not be the world's best at grammar and spelling but I really wish my android devices would stop changing my words after what I've written has scrolled off the page. I've noticed it on a lot of other user's posts lately too and not just on MN. Is it me. Is it my device. Am I just not checking enough. I'm not sure if it's just android or if apple devices do it also. I swear I'm spelling things correctly and my tech is trying to gaslight me into thinking I'm losing my faculties.

I write. I check. I hit "Post" and all of a sudden it's messed up. It's doing nothing for my self confidence.

Have you got an auto spell check turned on?

FOJN · 29/08/2024 13:58

Not just you, my android devices do it all the time. Sometimes I make errors but the number of time I've seen you're changed to your and hear changed to here drives me mad. This morning I've had to change inappropriate capitalisation several times.

I've already had to correct this post. FFS

Yes, I use the predictive element for speed. I begin typing, chose the word I was looking for and check that's what is there but after that part has scrolled off the screen, it is changing words and adding letters in between words. Punctuation is appearing and disappearing. Sometimes words just go poof and gone. Things are getting changed after proofreading and moving on.

I've started questioning if I'm developing dementia or some other degenerative neurological condition. I'm not joking. I check and could swear it was right before moving on. I didn't think autocorrect changed stuff so long after typing. It never used to.

Yup, happens all the time. Type, proofread, press send/post, review message only to find it looks like it's been put through a drunken language translator. It's the random letters and spacing that gets me. I managed to catch it this morning before the word induction, typed correctly, got posted as information duct!

noblegiraffe · 29/08/2024 14:43

Mine has started adding extra words to the end of text messages. Like it predicts what I'm going to say next, then assumes if I press enter to send, that that's an 'ok' to add its prediction in.

amicissimma · 29/08/2024 15:14

It doesn't happen if you turn off autocorrect and predictive text.

Then you know whether or not you are illiterate and can be sure that all your typos are your own.

I recently realised that I had turned off auto updates on my Samsung. I used to have spellcheck where it underlined misspelled words. Great because my spelling always has been very bad, it was highlighted in school along with my poor reading an comprehension but it was the 80s and 90s so I was told I was just a bit dim (not bitter at all after working with dyslexic people and realising thats me, not at all Grin).

Now I have the option of either no spellcheck or this thing I am using now which autocorrects. But as you said, sometimes it is putting in really odd words or not autocorrecting. And now I feel a bit dim again!

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 29/08/2024 15:28

I can honestly say my Android device has never done that. If I cock up, its the fault of my own fat fingers.

Thistooshallpass24 · 29/08/2024 16:06

Me also, mix of android, glasses and cubot pocket phone ( tiny!)

Theunamedcat · 29/08/2024 16:09

My android autocorrects me wrong and if I accidentally hit a number in the middle of the word it's fine with that? No correction needed apparently 🙃

MissPeachyKeen · 29/08/2024 22:21

What annoys me more is that my android is very prudish & clearly disapproves of swearing.

If I get one letter wrong in a swear word (even a mild-not-really-swearing) - and actually even if its spelled correctly - it'll substitute the entire word some something completely random. Just dispenses with the whole 'this word is spelled most closely to what you're attempting' logic of predictive text.
