To think only a monster would claim a reward for returning a missing pet

Surely any decent human would refuse unless absolutely desperate for food or something

Well you can think that but your wrong. It's not an arsehole act at all and to be honest part of why you think that is probably because you don't have a much loved pet so you can't imagine how it would feel to lose them and how grateful you would be to get them back.

You're literally profiting from the fear and anguish of another human being and their animals companion.

Actually it would be an arsehole move to offer a reward and then not give one.

BecuaseIWantItThatWay · 29/08/2024 13:08

YABU.

Your threshold for what constitutes a monster is shockingly low.

If a reward is offered, it's a token of gratitude which the offeror feels positive to give.

I mean if you’ve gone out of your way to help search for their missing pet it’s a finders fee look at it that way.

What if it just turns up in your garden?

Or in my case which, seems to be the universally agreed local wildlife gastro pub, the kitchen?

DysonSphere · 29/08/2024 13:08

You've made no effort really have you in a case like that

No you're not. What a fucking odd way of thinking about the situation. You're returning their much loved animal and in return they are offering you the reward as a thank you.

You talk about it like these people are holding their pet ransom until they cough up the cash... Hmm

In most cases it will be a reward offered through insurance.

Would you not claim on your home insurance or car insurance if something went wrong?

ReadWithScepticism · 29/08/2024 13:10

Another thing to think about is that many owners would be so overwhelmingly relieved and joyful to have their pet back that they would really really get additional happiness from bestowing the reward. I can imagine circumstances in which it might even be churlish to refuse to take it.

That's quite a bonkers way of looking at it. The reward is a token of (agreed) gratitude for going to the effort of looking and returning your animal.

IReallyCouldntThinkOfAUsername · 29/08/2024 13:12

I'd never take a reward for returning an animal. But monsters is a stretch.

You still have to bribe him/her to come to you.

Not found a lost pet but both my DP and myself have found many lost phones and return them/ensure the owner can pick them up. No rewards ever. My DD, as a 4 year old, finds one lost phone and is given a tenner by the owner.

Teanbiscuits33 · 29/08/2024 13:12

I wouldn’t, personally, accept a reward. All I would have done is happened upon a missing pet and returned it to the owner, which would be the right thing to do. How does that make me some kind of hero for returning a pet to its rightful owner? It would be the right thing to do whether a reward was offered or not.

I would feel awkward accepting money for doing something any decent human being should do. Plus, it can be taken advantage of. Animals have been taken before now in the hope the owner gives a reward for its safe return.

That's two separate things though. As an OWNER, I would offer as much reward as I could afford if I thought it would help, and pay it happily if someone found my pet.

As a decent human being though, I would be embarrassed to return a pet back to its home, and then expect payment for doing that. It's profiting off someone else's desperation

Howdull · 29/08/2024 13:13

YABU - if a reward is offered, a reward is offered. It's an incentive for people to act and to do whatever the thing is that the reward is offered.

A monster would be someone who found a lost pet and then demanded a reward before returning it.

TeamPolin · 29/08/2024 13:13

Perhaps the 'monster' is in severe financial need and this helps them out of a hole..

Then it’s a lottery ticket 🤣

Sparklytoe · 29/08/2024 13:14

Does it ever happen?

I think most of the missing pet FB posts are scams

DadJoke · 29/08/2024 13:14

If it were my pet I’d insist on it.

Newsenmum · 29/08/2024 13:15

Someone might have put a lot of effort into finding/returning the pet. Times are hard. Definitely give them the reward.

Reugny · 29/08/2024 13:17

This thread has reminded me that lots of people on a certain platform think cats are lost when they aren't. They are just greedy and want more human slaves to feed and entertain them.

I also know three elderly cats whose owners all got messages about their "lost cat" when their cat was younger.

I don't even have a pet I just think taking a reward for doing a basic humane act is an arsehole move

Actually I never see someone offer a reward. But imagine someone is filthy rich and always works, so has no time to go look for the cat and a poor homeless person has time enough and goes look for the cat all day to earn 500 euro and then the rich one says: no you get nothing. You have to do it for free. That would be bad. So it depends. Someone who isn't poor demanding money from a poor cat owner yes that's bad.

There are groups set up to report missing pets in different areas.

Ponderingwindow · 29/08/2024 13:19

I’ve never understood why people
offer rewards for lost pets. However, if they do and the pet is found, they should honor the offer and pay the reward.

just from a practical perspective, do other people need motivation? Who wants a random pet in their care for longer than necessary?

@OptimismvsRealism

if it was my pet & id offered it, if it was returned to me I'd gladly pay it.

However, I do agree that needing to post a reward as an incentive it a terrible reflection on our society.

I wouldn't want the reward, but if they kept insisting, id accept the reward, then give it to the pet to spend on toys & treats 🤣
