This focus on Miele washing machines as being ‘the best’ is unreasonable? They all wash, after all!

Currently in the tedious but urgent process of buying a new washing machine. Won’t last long without one!
Last machine was a Miele classic, and it lasted 10 years, with use daily, if not twice daily
DH thinks we need another Miele
i think we can buy a Bosch or a John Lewis own brand for half the cost.
Miele machines don’t wash the clothes any better, do they?!
And is it unreasonable to think other brands are as good and would last that long?
We’re in big disagreement about to go to John Lewis!!

The lower cost ones likely won't last as long, so you'd need to factor in the buy twice in ten years thing. Up to you.

OFC you might be lucky and get a reliable machine that runs for a decade with nothing more than new brushes at year 6.

sleepyscientist · 29/08/2024 10:33

We've just replaced a LG at 10 year old think it was about £300 new. To be fair it could have been fixed but wanted a dark grey one

LadyDanburysHat · 29/08/2024 10:38

I would think a Bosch would be fine, they are also a good brand.

longapple · 29/08/2024 10:38

Bosch are offering an extra 3 years on the warranty on some of their models at the moment I think which takes it from 2 to 5 years, although they don't usually break within 5 years anyway so I guess it's low risk for them.

SleepingisanArt · 29/08/2024 10:39

My Miele died aged 19 (came with a 10 year warranty included which was never used). Replaced with another Miele. I do think it washes better than my friends cheaper machine as she's always having to do either extra rinses or spins which I don't need to. The cast iron cradle makes the machine heavy so it doesn't move during the spin cycle (some cheap machines have a concrete block in them which over time can break down and end up in the machine) and it is so quiet compared to the last one - the loudest noise is the water being pumped out not the spin cycle!

I got a cheap secondhand beko machine 12 years ago. It's still going strong. Never needed repairs

Sugarcoldturkey · 29/08/2024 10:41

Ask around to see if there are any Miele display units for sale (the exact machine on show in the shop). I got 70 percent off my Miele fridge!

WheresMySupportCat · 29/08/2024 10:43

We have two rental properties and always used to use Miele and Bosch. But we found they were just expensive to repair and had to be replaced anyway as often as any other machine so we now use whatever looks okay at Currys and replace as soon as they start to pack up. Our tenants are usually on assignment at our local hospital on 2 year contracts and I would say we replace roughly every 12-18 months.

(Yes I know- waiting to be piled on for being a greedy fucking LL).

Waspie · 29/08/2024 10:44

Miele, NEFF and Bosch are all the same company. We have Miele appliances that we've had for over 20 years, washing machine included. But then some (one!) which lasted only a few years (coffee machine).

Miele is about longevity and reliability. If you only got 10 years from your last Miele then you were short changed, and a Bosch would have done the job just as well.

WheresMySupportCat · 29/08/2024 10:45

Ooh sorry! Just realised you were talking about washing machines, not dishwashers! I have dishwashers on the brain because we have arriving today).

SleepingisanArt · 29/08/2024 10:45

OP have you checked to see if your machine can be repaired? Miele do a fixed price repair (excellent value as all parts and labour are included) and if they can't repair it they give you the cost off a new machine if you buy it from them (or half refund if you want to buy elsewhere).

LessMeek · 29/08/2024 10:45

My previous two washing machines were a beko and a candy, both very cheap at the time, both lasted 12 years of intense use. Similarly the very cheap fridge freezer I had lasted 22 years. It's the luck of the draw really, but I personally wouldn't buy something specifically because it might last longer when the price difference is so big. I got a hisense washing machine recently and it's good. Like you say, it washes the clothes, and it has the programmes / drum size/ spin speed / efficiency that were a priority to me.

Borborygmus · 29/08/2024 10:47

I think the quality of all makes of washing machine has declined. My old Siemens lasted 20+ years, but the Bosch I replaced it with is much more flimsily built, and I'll be surprised if it lasts 5. From what I've heard Miele aren't what they were either. I do have a Miele vacuum cleaner, and it's nothing special.

Your washing machines only last 12 to 18 months? That’s shocking

Takoneko · 29/08/2024 10:49

My LG washing machine is 13 years old and has never had any issues. I don’t think all washing machines are the same but Miele clearly aren’t the only brand producing decent reliable machines and more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean more reliable.

HerculesShipwright · 29/08/2024 10:49

I'm not convinced they are any better. My issue with washing machines is that I really can't last more than a few days without one. So even waiting for an engineer to fix it under warranty takes too long. So I effectively treat them as disposable and buy cheap machines. But in fact they do generally last reasonably well. We have a Beko and it's at least 4 years old and I won't have paid more than about £300.

Krampers · 29/08/2024 10:51

I have one I inherited at my first house I bought- it never breaks down and because I sold my house to someone who was going to gut the place I took it with me. I half expected it to die but it is still going. It refuses to die ( I wouldn't mind updating to more energy efficient one) and it is now 20 years old lol.

Dishwashers!

yes i know it is. Not sure why tbh. Ours is maybe 3 years and counting and the last one was a solid 8 or so years.

But they never seem to last that long in our rentals. None of the white goods do. But we have a guy who takes the machines and recycles them for parts and it's important to us that people who are paying a shit ton of money to us every month get a really good service. So every changeover we do new carpets, white goods, curtains etc.

DwightDFlysenhower · 29/08/2024 10:52

I'd be more concerned about having a wash cycle that takes less than three and a half hours. <side eyes Hotpoint machine>

Eco-friendly and efficient it may be, but sometimes I need a speedier option.

WheresMySupportCat · 29/08/2024 10:53

That's so wasteful.

WheresMySupportCat · 29/08/2024 10:55

Not really. Everything gets recycled. Curtains go to the charity shop. The carpets go to a place that specialises in reconditioning them for either sale in aid of our local hospice.

I'm okay with that. It's fricking expensive to us though.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 29/08/2024 10:56

I have a 12 year old Beko that is still going strong. 3 kids so the machine has performed plenty of loads.

TeenLifeMum · 29/08/2024 11:00

I remember having this debate and couldn’t justify Miele unless it hung the clothes out to dry. I bought a Samsung and have had it 14 years so far. It was much cheaper than Miele but not cheap cheap. About £500 I think.
