This focus on Miele washing machines as being ‘the best’ is unreasonable? They all wash, after all!

Currently in the tedious but urgent process of buying a new washing machine. Won’t last long without one!
Last machine was a Miele classic, and it lasted 10 years, with use daily, if not twice daily
DH thinks we need another Miele
i think we can buy a Bosch or a John Lewis own brand for half the cost.
Miele machines don’t wash the clothes any better, do they?!
And is it unreasonable to think other brands are as good and would last that long?
We’re in big disagreement about to go to John Lewis!!

We've had Miele, Bosch, another Bosch and we are now onto a Panasonic and I love the Panasonic as much as my Bosch.

TemuSpecialBuy · 29/08/2024 11:08

Yanbu

We’ve had a Samsung for 5 years and no sign of being on the out…

Thatmissingsock · 29/08/2024 11:08

Another here with a beko thats 12yrs old and still going strong. It was cheap as chips, we bought it when we had no money thinking we'd do well to get 5yrs out of then would hopefully be able to afford a 'better' one.... Meanwhile my friend has gone through 2 premium branded machines in this time and is on no. 3.
When it dies i'll be buying another Beko!!

Having experienced been stuck with cheap shitty washing machines in rented, I thought my Zanussi was good step up until it broke and we got a Bosch. Now our clothes are much fresher and I realised the Zanussi didn’t rinse the clothes very well even on an added water setting. The programmes were also similar ish on paper but in practice the Bosch is more useful and more intuitive and I am confident it reaches the right temperature during the wash.

So I think there is often a significant difference. Can’t say what the difference would be Bosch to Miele though.

I bought my Miele washer/dryer in 2008 and it seemed expensive at about £1,000, but I have been extremely happy with the actual washing performance all this time. DH was humming and hawing about the cost until the salesman said it would last 10 years (the guarantee period was 5 years then.)
In this time it has had a replacement door seal. And I cracked the window glass by closing the door somewhat forcibly with my knee some time ago but it hasn't affected the machine at all.
The 'cottons' programme is outstanding, grubby sports socks come up almost sparkling.
I've also found their customer service agents to be extremely helpful -- once when I left the filter open by mistake and the machine flooded and stopped, I phoned the service centre to book a call out and the chap gave me instructions on how to do it myself, I did what he said and it fixed the problem completely. Another minor fault (can't remember exactly what) was fixed after I followed the CS agent's advice to run a 95 degree wash through with the machine empty.
I'm ready to buy Miele again when this one gives up the ghost even though the equivalent machine now costs around 2.5k. (And would definitely see me out...)

mitogoshi · 29/08/2024 11:13

Get a beko, they won't last as long but are still cheaper overall

oldwhyno · 29/08/2024 11:15

A £500 Bosch should last 10 years if properly looked after. A Miele should have lasted longer really.

GreatMistakes · 29/08/2024 11:15

I'd probably go for the non miele because you can get some good stuff at a good price point. If a £500 machine lasts 5 years, its cost less than a tenner a month.

Will you have the same needs in 5 or 10 years time? Do you need a large drum now because you have 3 teenagers but in 5 years they will be off to uni? If so a large drum might become inefficient.

Technology also moves on in that time.

UpTheMagicFarawayTree · 29/08/2024 11:17

We've found Hoover washing machines to be brilliant, the last one we had finally conked out after 15 years.

JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit · 29/08/2024 11:18

It might just be my bad luck, but I've had 2* dodgy Bosch washing machines and 1 dodgy Bosch dishwasher. I would NOT recommend them. My Samsung EcoBubble is great but I do not expect it to last 10y. It was around £600.

*I did not buy a second one - it was replaced by Bosch and still died.

MrsClatterbuck · 29/08/2024 11:18

My AEG washing machine will be 15 next month. The previous AEG lasted 10 years. We live in a new build and brought my washing machine with me instead of getting the Candy washer dryer.
In the last year we have had to replace the Candy dishwasher, hob and fridge freezer. After 7 to 8 years. Replaced with Bosch dishwasher Zanussi hob and AEG fridge freezer. The Candy oven is rarely used so should last a good while. Things are definitely not made to last the same. We left behind Siemens dishwasher 19 years old when moving house. My sisters Miele dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer are still going strong after 18 years.

Miele, NEFF and Bosch are all the same company. We have Miele appliances that we've had for over 20 years, washing machine included. But then some (one!) which lasted only a few years (coffee machine).

Miele is about longevity and reliability. If you only got 10 years from your last Miele then you were short changed, and a Bosch would have done the job just as well.

I don't think that's the case is it? Bosch, Siemens and Neff are all part of the same company but I think Miele are still a family owned separate entity.

This has reminded me, we used to call an unreliable car a Dagenham Dustbin (ie made on Friday with the workers not so bothered because it was nearly the weekend) Unfair, possibly.

TheTripThatWasnt · 29/08/2024 11:21

Another one with an 'old' Beko. Mine's about to go into its 12th year without ever having gone wrong. I'll be replacing it with a Beko when it dies. Whilst some brands have (seemingly) gone downhill over the years, I think Beko have upped their game, so I have no issue buying from them again.

FawnFrenchieMum · 29/08/2024 11:21

I have just replaced my Indesit with a Samsung and that definitely washes better then my old one.

Our first indesit was replaced by the insurance after the drum collapsed after a couple of years, this then sat in the garage for a few years after we moved into a property that had one already in. Its lasted 3-4 years of use and was making a lot of noise, we didn't seek repair as it wasn't that great.

Never had a Meile but I would say some brands are definitely better then others. Very happy with my Samsung which seems to be mid price range. Cheaper the Miele, more expensive then Indesit / Hotpoint etc.

coolmum123 · 29/08/2024 11:22

in 25 years I have had 2 washing machines. My first one was an AEG bought without doing any research other than it was made in Germany. It lasted me 22 years. Now I have a Miele bought on offer at John Lewis with a 10 year warranty. My machines get used quite a bit but I do look after them in that I do the Maintenance clean cycle every 3 to 4 months and I clean the filters regularly. We do now have a water softner but for the life of my AEG we had very hard water but I was using Calgon. So I guess I would say if you look after them and maintain them then they will last longer. Regarding the washing I would say Miele have really good wash options and I have not had issues with fading / torn clothes coming out of it.
The only other thing I would say (off topic) is when looking at white goods and their energy rating do the maths. We were looking to replace our dishwasher and Miele was about £900 more than the top of the range Bosch one which had a lower energy rating. However when we did the maths we would have only been saving about £10 over the year buying the Miele so we settled for Bosch.

ErinAoife · 29/08/2024 11:23

My previous washing machine was a bosh and lasted 23 years (for context 3 kids who are absolute pigs, machine is on constantly). I bought a thor this year as large drum, very good energy rating and half the price of the big brand.

Also, the energy rating they quote only applies to the most energy efficient programme. So if you're not using that to do your washing, all bets are off.

I'm sure most of them do quote the figures for the amount of energy used for each programme somewhere, but I don't imagine anyone actually looks at that, and just looks at the headline rating (the letter) instead.

flymetoalphacentauri · 29/08/2024 12:04

My Bosch lasted 20 months before the bearings went. Dh examined it when the men had it apart and had to leave to order a part. He said it wasn't well built at all (lots of plastic and that rubbish metallic substance the Chinese use). He looked it up and they are made in China now. Even the repair men couldn't work out how the bearings could have gone so quickly as it had been properly used.

The Samsung we had lasted about two years. Stuff is rubbish now. The Miele might be okay, but it also might not. Past reputation and performance is meaningless now.

Squirrelsnut · 29/08/2024 12:07

My decade-old and used daily Bosch is absolutely fine.

zingally · 29/08/2024 12:10

I have a 10 year old, mid-range Beko that is still going strong.

I've probably jinxed it now though!

volteface · 29/08/2024 12:13

Just to add re the Bosch, I’d noticed that their quality wasn’t as good as in previous eras so I wouldn’t have bought it without the free upgrade to a 5 year warranty.

Miele is not the same company as Bosch & Neff.
Bosch & Neff are both owned by Siemens.
We have a Miele classic & it's been a lot less trouble than our previous Bosch machines. We've had it for 9 years with no trouble (touch wood!).

Skyrainlight · 29/08/2024 12:20

We have just bought a new washing machine, the domestic appliance repair guy who came to try fix our old one suggested we go with Bosch. We were going to go with Bosch but they were too deep for the space we have but I thought he would know which he is called to fix most often so his recommendation should be good.

BishyBarnyBee · 29/08/2024 12:22

We are very disillusioned with Miele after it was cheaper to get a new dishwasher than to pay the service charge for them to repair our old one. I do think they are good quality, but not as good as they think, and if something does go wrong, it's very expensive to fix.
