This focus on Miele washing machines as being ‘the best’ is unreasonable? They all wash, after all!

Currently in the tedious but urgent process of buying a new washing machine. Won’t last long without one!
Last machine was a Miele classic, and it lasted 10 years, with use daily, if not twice daily
DH thinks we need another Miele
i think we can buy a Bosch or a John Lewis own brand for half the cost.
Miele machines don’t wash the clothes any better, do they?!
And is it unreasonable to think other brands are as good and would last that long?
We’re in big disagreement about to go to John Lewis!!

We’ve just replaced a Miele that I bought second hand in 2009 for £90. It survived three house moves and the family growing from 3-5. I think it died due to overloading as I since discovered it was only a 4kg load. The drum ‘dropped’ and the whole thing started banging and moving across the floor!
We bought another Miele. I hope it’ll be worth it.

We've found Hoover washing machines to be brilliant, the last one we had finally conked out after 15 years.

Good to know, this was what I ended up ordering, it arrives on Saturday.

MostRidiculousDilemmaOfModernParenting · 29/08/2024 12:33

Our last one was a miele and washed beautifully. I don't even know what brand our current one is (nothing well known) but it keeps leaving a residue on all dishes and even though it's total volume is more than the miele one it's layed out in such a way that you can actually fit much less.

Our dishwasher before the miele was a bosch and thst worked very well as well.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 29/08/2024 12:33

As someone who has bought more washing machines then I care to admit over the past few years. I mean this nicely you’re naive, they don’t all just keep washing. Honestly, if yours served you well you’ve no reason to be tempted away.

I had an LG for 10+ years when it died. In that time LG became an expensive brand, so I replaced it with a Hisense that died after 13 months. there was one inbetween (think it was Bosch) that just shook itself to death after 14 months and now I’ve got one I think is an AEG that’s a cunt. Next time, if I can get a non self dosing one (have to use lots of different cleaners) I’m getting a miele

Madcats · 29/08/2024 12:43

We have lots of Miele kit, most of which we bought ex-display either from Abingdon or from a kitchen showroom. The store will deliver/install/remove old appliances. They list the stock they have available:

www.miele.co.uk/c/miele-outlet-abingdon-1409.htm

The 10 year old washing machine is worth its weight in gold thanks to its shirt wash (no need to iron).

balzamico · 29/08/2024 12:44

To those that have a newer Miele - does it still let you open the door during the cycle for the odd sock you missed and let you open the door v soon after it finishes spinning?
Mine is 18 years old and those are the two reasons I love it - I dread the day it goes as I open the door and chuck something else in so often!

I'd be more concerned about having a wash cycle that takes less than three and a half hours. <side eyes Hotpoint machine>

Eco-friendly and efficient it may be, but sometimes I need a speedier option.

Well my lovely 👀 2nd hand zanussi eco wash is 4 hours 20 min a lot of thought goes into what time I put wash on as I don’t like to do it at night when sleeping or when out of the house (fire dangers) so I guess that’s reason it was sold on but it’s a good one so sticking with it.

LoveSandbanks · 29/08/2024 12:47

I’ve had several Miele washing machines. House came with an Electrolux which we decided to use until it died. It’s actually great. It’s 5 years old now (family of 5 so gets use a LOT) and it has some features that I love that Miele didn’t have (can choose the length of the cycle within the program you use)

having said that when the dishwasher died we went Miele 🤷‍♀️

NevergonnagiveHughup · 29/08/2024 12:48

We’ve just replaced our Bosch of 19 years with another Bosch. About 10 washes a week or more when the 3 kids were littler.

A guy came to fix my MIL's washing machine and I happened to be there and got into a conversation with him. He had his own repair company but had worked for Miele and Bosch. He told me that the Miele machines that were around the £1k - £1500 mark were swiss made (just assembled in Germany) and the ones that were nearer £2k and over were the 'proper' Mieles. He also said that there was not much difference in the dishwashers between lower to mid range Miele and Bosch as long as you go for the top of the range Bosch.
Also as an aside on holiday this year we stayed at an air bnb and it had a miele dishwasher which had their dosing thing as well as being able to use regular detergent. The thing was a nightmare as because the dosing contraption is in the door the hinges cant support the weight so it doesn't open partially it just almost falls open if you arent holding it. then when the cycle is done there's this arm thing that comes out of the machine to hold the door open to let the steam escape. But you have to wait until the arm retracts before you can open the door. So if you want something out of there quickly its impossible.
I said to my hubby I was glad we went for the Bosch after the holiday.

Lavendersquare · 29/08/2024 12:55

I found that the lower the cost the longer the basic wash cycle. One cheap Hoover model took 3:45 hours for a standard wash!

My AEG cost far lot more but the standard mixed wash only takes 69 minutes and a quick wash 20 minutes.

Definitely have a look at AEG they are fabulous machines that John Lewis actually rebadge as their own 😉

Rory17384949 · 29/08/2024 12:55

I don't think they're worth the extra, Bosch and JL get good reviews usually.

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 29/08/2024 12:58

6yo Bosch here doing fine <tempts fate> - the door seal probably needs replacing as it can be a bit leaky, but the machine itself has survived plenty of insults (Lego getting loose frm a pillowcase, the laundry of a family of 5 + cats).

The Miele dishwasher bought at the same time, at dh's insistence, has been a disappointment. It's fine as things go but stuff will sometimes come out of a short or eco cycle still dirty.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 29/08/2024 13:04

I don’t know how the price compares, Costco do Miele

sounds like we have the same aeg. I fucking loathe mine (the feelings mutual, I’m sure my machine hates me).

I had a repair man come out after a few weeks of ownership who questioned why I bought it as they are troublesome with their touch screens always needing replacement.

just goes to show, one persons experience is not the same as another’s!

1apenny2apenny · 29/08/2024 13:07

I think in the old days Miele was worth the money. Now they only offer 2 year guarantee, imo if they are selling them at the very high prices and being 'the best' surely their guarantee would reflect the confidence in their product. There was a post not so long ago about how poor the customer service was, I would not expect to see that if a company like Miele. My Bosch came with an extended 5 year guarantee. I don't love it but it does the job.

JL machines are made by Electrolux.

When choosing a machine I just looked at the things that I wanted - ability to add clothes mid wash for example and a quick wash option. I don't want the ability to control it with my phone. I would like a machine that hangs the clothes out, folds and puts them away but sadly that's years away 🤣.

Vettrianofan · 29/08/2024 13:08

I have a Hisense washing machine. Had it for about two years and it's working fine. Large capacity. 12kgs.

Off topic but I remember me being not very impressed with the iPad when it first came out and hubby bought one. My brother on the other hand was so excited and he said to me 'what would it have to do to impress you?' and I said get up, make the dinner and wash up! 🤣🤣🤣

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 29/08/2024 13:13

completely! I just look at that as more to go wrong. I think that’s where Miele excelled. They didn’t do gimmicks, just kept it simple and made sure it all worked well.

pinkysmum · 29/08/2024 13:13

Miele make reliable machines, but god help you if you need customer service. They cancelled me multiple times ON THE DAY...and the first time they didn't even tell me - I sat in all day waiting for them. If you look online you will see multiple forums with people saying the same thing. The problem is they operate on a system where they order the parts, book you in, then check ON THE MORNING to see if the parts have arrived then cancel you at that point if they are not in. This is what the engineer told me and he said all the engineers thought it was wrong. If you've taken the day off work to wait in....tough luck.
I will never ever buy a Miele machine again in a million years. It was a horrendous customer service experience and dragged on for months. They never even replied to any of my multiple complaints....and they told me they didn't even have a customer complaints department.

Yes, ours lets you do that. Very useful feature!

Lincslady53 · 29/08/2024 13:39

We have a Samsung. Best washing machine we have had. Easy to use, one of the first that is intuitive and can be worked without referring to the manual. Let's you know when it's time to run the cleaning cycle, and it plays a jaunty little tune, based on The Trout by Debussy, when the cycle is finished. DD bought a slightly dearer model that has a little window so you can pop in a missed item after the cycle has started.

Mine does but the button to add laundry isn't obvious, that bit is on a touch screen so you have to faff around with down and up arrows. I stayed away from a model which had wi fi too . Don't see the point when it already has a delay start function

FlannelandPuce · 29/08/2024 13:45

I have a Bosch (series 6) washing machine still going 10 years later. It has a 3+ hour eco setting, but you can press an eco setting on all washes to make it more energy efficient, and can open the door at any point and add things.
I have used quite a few different washing machines on self catering holidays, and as someone up thread said there is a difference in the quality of the wash. With my Bosch machine clothes seem to come out fresher and cleaner, and I am always relieved to get back to it.
I have also found, after years of using own brand non bio powder, that sadly it really is worth paying extra for fairy capsules. But that probably a different thread....

AbbieLexie · 29/08/2024 13:50

We’ve replaced our Maytag with a Miele washing machine - our clothes are noticeably cleaner. The cost has been more than worth it.
