To ask for your favourite disaster films?

I unashamedly love a disaster film, tbh usually a shark film but currently watching "the towering inferno".

Other favourites of mine are the poisedon adventure, Dante's peak, anaconda, volcano, Armageddon, 2012, no escape (couldn't actually breathe).

Any other recommendations?

Also any one watch and realise you would just simply not survive due to having no upper most strength and being unable to achieve any of the feats the actors do to survive?

Does anyone else google disaster movies on you tube and then just watch all the best clips without the tedious storylines getting in the way. Or just me 😳🤣

Spectre8 · 27/08/2024 07:08

Twister! 2012 and day after tomorrow are my go to.

Recently saw new Twisters movie in 4dx...haha what a ride that and highly recommend you see it in 4dx

doradoo · 27/08/2024 07:23

Possibly a bit close to the bone but a pseudodocumentary — the day Britain stopped

Oh my word, my absolute favourite genre of all time, I would add to the already excellent list:

Daylight (1996)
Thirteen Lives (2022)
The Core (2003)
The Wave (2015)
Flood (2007)
Deepwater Horizon (2016)

I went to the cinema for the first time in years to see Twisters and enjoyed it enormously.

Edited

Saw Daylight on tv as a kid. I have been terrified of underwater tunnels ever since. Absolute nightmare-fodder 😂

AmazingBouncingFerret · 27/08/2024 07:36

It’s not a natural disaster film like a lot of the others suggested but can I throw in Unstoppable from 2010 and starting Denzel Washington.

BustingBaoBun · 27/08/2024 07:50

Love a disaster movie!

A PP mention there was a new version of the Andes airplane crash...it was brilliant... Society of the Snow. It was really good

Also on a similar theme, "13 lives" about the young boys trapped in an underground cave, true story. Held my breath lots

elQuintoConyo · 27/08/2024 07:55

The Medusa Touch is a semi-disaster film, Richard Burton 1978. Guy as telekinetic powers and causes massive disasters with his mind.

awesome film

O I suggested a disaster movie tonight but no one was up for it. Think I will just watch one on my own tomorrow 😂

Classics are of course Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure, original over remake but will watch the remake. I actually feel like I’ve watched something recently that a character makes reference to being afraid of ships based on The Poseidon adventure then the very same thing happens. I’m not sure if I’ve made it up, it’s a dream (yes I dream about disasters 😝) or I actually did watch something.

My go to lazy day movies would be 2012 and The Day After tomorrow. Like many others watching some of The Rock is always a hit. I actually enjoyed The Meg 2 mainly for it’s cheesy jokes, the emergency condoms ( had to tell my DDs not quite 10yo friend to ask his mum why I laughed at that bit, I messaged her before he got home) and my 10yo DD who thought eating people was ok but not Pippin! My girl has inherited my disaster genes and loves Sharks, she begged me to take her to see The Meg 2 after falling in love with the Jaws movies.

I don’t think I have anything to add to the lists though.

I was looking forward to the new twister movie but not sure of the reviews.

That was on 911, you didn't dream it!

Iiquidsnake · 27/08/2024 08:45

One that I haven't seen mentioned so far is Runaway Train with Jon Voight, great film

cakeorwine · 27/08/2024 08:47

The Day After Tomorrow. I guess the Royal Family never made it when the RAF helicopter crew froze to death.

I do love 2012 - the effects are amazing.

Greenland is fantastic. It’s on Prime and is one of my favourite movies at the minute. We liked it so much we got the kids ( both teenagers) to watch it the next day.

I never heard of "Greenland" so thanks for the heads up, I'll give it a go this week 😎

The Day After Tomorrow
The Impossible (although true story)
San Andreas
2012

And Twister, my all time favourite.

I love Twister!!

theDudesmummy · 27/08/2024 09:04

Some people didn't like it but I liked Leave the World Behind.

KimberleyClark · 27/08/2024 09:10

Does Apollo 13 count as a disaster movie?

I love Twister!!

Twister is great. It looks gorgeous, has an incredible supporting cast (Philip Seymour Hoffmann and Alan Ruck in tiny roles, Cary Elwes as the baddie), and Helen Hunt’s hair deserved its own Oscar.

WonderingWanda · 27/08/2024 09:26

Lots if my favourites already mentioned. What about Speed?

theDudesmummy · 27/08/2024 09:29

The last scene of Perfect Storm haunts me every time I am on a boat!

BellaPommefritio · 27/08/2024 09:30

I became hooked on this genre via Poseidon (poor, brave strong swimmer Mrs Rosen!) and Towering Inferno as a kid!
I like the way dogs often play a crucial heartstopping moment to ramp up tension- from memory:
a collie with a homeless man in Day after Tomorrow only just getting into the library beofre the tidal wave,
'C'mon Boomer!'- cue slow mo jump of dog getting into fleeing vehicle in Daylight,
and the aforementioned Pippin in The Meg upthread! Can anyone remember any others?

BellaPommefritio · 27/08/2024 09:33

Has Black Water Abyss been mentioned? flooded cave with crocs!

harriettenightingale · 27/08/2024 09:46

Possibly a bit close to the bone but a pseudodocumentary — the day Britain stopped

At that time the BBC did a series called "If" which was about different possible (and quite scarily plausible) future scenarios if things went they way they were going. I also love a disaster film or doom doc and they were great!

"If the Generations Fall Out" considered life in 2024 looking from 20 years ago.

harriettenightingale · 27/08/2024 09:48

I also enjoyed "Right At Your Door", which is really quite horrifying:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/RightattYourDoor

Right at Your Door is a 2006 American thriller filmm^ about a couple and follows the events surrounding them when multiple dirty bombss^ detonate in Los Angeles.

The dog in the tunnel in Independence Day only just makes it when the road tunnel catches fire!

SingingSands · 27/08/2024 10:24

I love all of these! My gran introduced me to Earthquake (1974), The Towering Inferno (1974), and The Poseidon Adventure (1972) with her when I was a kid in the early 80s and I was hooked on disaster films ever since.

It's an oldie but I also love Ice Cold in Alex - not about a natural disaster or invasion but the characters do get stuck in a sandstorm!
