To ask for your favourite disaster films?

I unashamedly love a disaster film, tbh usually a shark film but currently watching "the towering inferno".

Other favourites of mine are the poisedon adventure, Dante's peak, anaconda, volcano, Armageddon, 2012, no escape (couldn't actually breathe).

Any other recommendations?

Also any one watch and realise you would just simply not survive due to having no upper most strength and being unable to achieve any of the feats the actors do to survive?

Is Titanic classed as a disaster film? Watched it again the other day for the 1st time in years.

Bonjovispjs · 26/08/2024 22:33

Titanic
War of the worlds
Knowing

AdoraBell · 26/08/2024 22:33

I’ve never seen 2012 because I was in Chile in 2010 when an earthquake, 8.9 and lasted for almost 9 minutes. After that I couldn’t face any disaster films.

Other than that I like Dante’s Peak and The Day After Tomorrow.

Alltheunreadbooks · 26/08/2024 22:34

There's 3 Norwegian ones that are on Netflix or Prime :

The Wave
The Tunnel
The Quake

All excellent.

There's a 1976 film I want to get called "Earthquake" with Charlton Heston in it, but I'm struggling to find it.

I must say The Towering Inferno is exceptional though, the daddy of all disaster films.

Also , does "The Perfect Storm" with Clooney in it count?

The Day After Tomorrow
The Impossible (although true story)
San Andreas
2012

And Twister, my all time favourite.

Twister is an excellent film! And the recent reboot wasn’t at all bad.

SelMarin · 26/08/2024 22:36

I love the idea of a disaster movie but most of them are pretty rubbish. It says something that the likes of The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 (pretty widely considered to be below-average movies) are among the most recommended on the thread! I've only seen the former, wanted to enjoy it, but wad left really underwhelmed.

I haven't seen it but Melancholia was well-received and is on my watch list.

Don't Look Up was the most recent one I've seen. It's not great but watchable.

Doggymummar · 26/08/2024 21:42

Towering inferno is the best

Agreed. Nobody else in my family can stand it, but I love it. Paul Newman, Steve McQueen and lots of other big stars - how can you go wrong?

Mammyloveswine · 26/08/2024 22:37

The towering inferno very tense now as there's been an explosion as the scenic elevator is full and going down...

The original Poseidon adventure is an absolute classic!

Agree. Still scared of boats 😁

That's the point of them though, the best ones are a bit ridiculous!

The Reef.

It's similar to Open Water, but the boat got damaged as opposed to left them adrift.

Knowing there are sharks circling you, bloody terrifying.

Enjoyed the reef! You seen the sequel?

@peesinapod have you seen birdbox Barcelona? I enjoyed that!

(I have been laid up with nasty illnesses so have had lots of film time that I don't normally get!).

I did start watching it but couldn't get into it. I'll try it again.
Great thread, lots of good suggestions 😊

Oldfatandfrumpy · 26/08/2024 22:47

Twister (and the new one Twisters but the original was best)
Unstoppable is also fab. It's slightly different as it's about a runaway train, but Chris Pine and Denzel Washington are great in it

I'llBuyThatForADollar · 26/08/2024 23:06

The China Syndrome with Jack Lemmon, Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas. Tense. Brilliant

CagneyandLacy · 26/08/2024 23:19

One Film, which doesn’t quite fit the disaster genre, is “Threads”. I think it was 1983, made by the bbc and with a screenplay by Barry Hines (ales). It’s extraordinary on so many levels Haunts my dreams a bit though!

Not to be confused with “The day after tomorrow “ is “The day after” - also 1983 but American. Also about nuclear war. It’s terrifying but also very significant.

You’ll love then both!

AmyandPhilipfan · 26/08/2024 23:22

Is Daylight the one with people trapped in a car tunnel and Sylvester Stallone manages to get in and rescue them? I really liked that one. I do enjoy a good disaster movie. Watched Greenland the other day which was pretty good. Also loved Day After Tomorrow. Oh and Sully about the real plane crash on the Hudson River. Oh, my favourite as a teenager was Alive, about the plane crash in the mountains that led to survivors having to eat their dead friends. Think there's been a new version recently but haven't seen it.

Chicca1970 · 26/08/2024 23:28

The Poseidon Adventure (1972) - absolute bloody classic 👌👌

ReturnoftheBink · 26/08/2024 23:29

Are you me?! I need to go back and read the whole thread but I wanted to add one that I loved as teen that’s not exactly a disaster film, but given the similar taste you might like: Deadly Pursuit. MAJOR b movie vibes, in a good way

I haven’t watched it for a few years - I know it had been on you tube. The actor who played Zak Dingle is in it - playing a local government worker with no real resources but who’s somehow responsible for sorting out housing after the nuclear attack on Sheffield . He briefly wonders if tents would help but quickly see the futility of any kind of action. “bastards!” he screams.

Chicca1970 · 26/08/2024 23:36

I bloody love The Poseidon Adventure - I watched it as a kid with my Grandad - totally OTT and gripping - all the characters were stupendous and you became really invested in their safe escape …

UnnecessaryOwl · 26/08/2024 23:36

My faves are already here,

Twister
Independence Day
The Day after tomorrow
War of the worlds

I loved Under Paris too and think yes, these kind of films are supposed to be a bit ridiculous OP so with that I put forth Pacific Rim. It’s more of an invasion Independence Day type than disaster, but an awfully fun watch!

Also enjoyed The Perfect Storm and Extinction.
