To ask for your favourite disaster films?

I unashamedly love a disaster film, tbh usually a shark film but currently watching "the towering inferno".

Other favourites of mine are the poisedon adventure, Dante's peak, anaconda, volcano, Armageddon, 2012, no escape (couldn't actually breathe).

Any other recommendations?

Also any one watch and realise you would just simply not survive due to having no upper most strength and being unable to achieve any of the feats the actors do to survive?

Omg you are my people. I LOVE disaster movies. I have since I watched The Towering Inferno with my granny as a youngster!

love 2012, Deep Impact.

I got told off for laughing at San Andreas when the tsunami arrived. Like ‘what else can go wrong?.’

While not strictly disaster films. They all start with one, so I'm going to throw the Final Destination films into the mix

Have just rewatched them all 🤣🤣

Last Breath is a real life drama/disaster.
Touching the Void is based on a true story, too.
Or try Open Water.

Edited

Last breath was too real! BIL is a deep sea diver and freaked me out too much!

I'll have to watch San Andreas! If it's the Rock and similar in ridiculousness to skyscraper then I will LOVE it!

My favourite, most people have never even heard of, it’s very underrated imo is ‘Juggernaut’ with a stellar, mostly British cast (Anthony Hopkins, Roy Kinnear, Richard Harris, Omar Sherif, Ian Holm, David Hemmings, Freddie Jones etc), It’s set on a luxury cruise ship, and there is a bomb threat for ransom. I love the (very understated) humour in the face of terror and the subtlety of the performances, the characters separate stories and the fact it’s lacking in the shouty arguing that is seen in most Hollywood disaster movies.
Anyone else seen it? I got it on DVD still 😂

Mammyloveswine · 26/08/2024 22:07

There is a one on prime I watched recently about a plane that crashed into the ocean and there was a huge air pocket but then sharks swam in and started trying to eat the survivors.. was ludicrously unrealistic but very fun!

Whenever there's a countdown clock in a film, one of DH or I will lean over and intone "TIME TO GEOSTORM" after the very helpful speaking countdown clock in said film.

JanglyBeads · 26/08/2024 22:11

What's the one about cave diving, possibly based on a true event? Absolutely terrifying, wouldn't recommend it to me iyswim.

GrouchyKiwi · 26/08/2024 22:14

San Andreas is ace. It's not as good as 2012 but it's similarly full of All The Disasters All At Once.

Frostythecat · 26/08/2024 22:14

Skyscraper is the Rock film.

Peanutbuttercrumble · 26/08/2024 22:14

You might like the Martian or Jungle if you like films where people have to survive.

PeachyGreenBean · 26/08/2024 22:16

Oh my word, my absolute favourite genre of all time, I would add to the already excellent list:

Daylight (1996)
Thirteen Lives (2022)
The Core (2003)
The Wave (2015)
Flood (2007)
Deepwater Horizon (2016)

I went to the cinema for the first time in years to see Twisters and enjoyed it enormously.

RubberyChicken · 26/08/2024 22:16

The Poseidon Adventure 1972 version

Ooh not heard of jungle.. the Martian was ok.

Did somebody mention Armageddon? The greatest film of all time imho. May I also suggest Flight of the Phoenix for those unfamiliar - both versions. And all the plane crash films, Alive and Society of the Snow, both the same story.

Placemarking for more suggestions.

PeachyGreenBean · 26/08/2024 22:23

47 meters down (2017)
Into the Storm (2014)
Under Paris (2024)

These are not quite as good but if you start to run short..

AnImaginaryCat · 26/08/2024 22:24

Absolutely love a diasatet movie. Day After Tommorw is right up my street.

I must confess I'm just posting on this thread as there's films mentioned I've not watched. Prepare myself for the next time I'm home alone!!

That's called No Way Up and it was surprisingly good.
You can't beat a bit of Sharknado.

The ending was comedy gold, just put all your knowledge of basic physics aside 😂

Mammyloveswine · 26/08/2024 22:30

@peesinapod have you seen birdbox Barcelona? I enjoyed that!

(I have been laid up with nasty illnesses so have had lots of film time that I don't normally get!).

The Shallows with Blake Lively.
And usually anything with The Rock .

Tooty78 · 26/08/2024 22:31

The Wave a Norwegian film with subtitles. Doesn't sound very prepossessing I know, but it's a great disaster movie.
We watched it on Prime, but it was some time ago.
