AIBU to think this is happening too often?

It used to be that a thread stayed up unless people were calling each other cunts, now a thread gets pulled because the op doesn’t like the answers they are getting.

OP posts:
murasaki · 26/08/2024 18:14

I've just noticed the thread by the very entitled poster who wants their MiL to do their cleaning in exchange for seeing the baby now has this message. A bit ridiculous really. It's not identifying in any way, just someone who didn't like the quite reasonable reaction they were getting.

harriethoyle · 26/08/2024 18:14

Yep. It’s really annoying

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 26/08/2024 18:15

Yes. It pissed me right off TBH.

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 26/08/2024 18:15

Agreed. I thought the general rule was that threads could only be pulled if the OP had been outed IRL, or something equally serious. Now it seems they can be pulled just by asking. Maybe @MNHQ can clarify the position?

murasaki · 26/08/2024 18:16

Mind you, if Mumsnet jump to delete it, no wonder the poster expects everyone else to do what they say.

Daleksatemyshed · 26/08/2024 18:16

Sometimes I think they've been outed or realized they've said too much, other times they just don't like the answers

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 26/08/2024 18:17

It really annoys me too- to be honest I think there is a lot more flouncing on MN than there used to be. It used to famously be a place for quite robust discourse, now there’s a lot of drizzling about “vipers”.

(PS I love your username, @BiscuityBoyle . Pair aul bugger. )

Minimum85percentCocoa · 26/08/2024 18:18

Yes I’ve asked before to have posts deleted (I have anxiety and didn’t like the responses I was getting - fully understand this wasn’t a good enough reason for mnhq to delete) but that mil post did seem a bit like double standards to me as I can’t see a reason it was deleted other than op didn’t like the responses

Errors · 26/08/2024 18:18

YANBU and I’m not a fan of the over zealous censorship on this site in general.

Too many threads get pulled, too many posts deleted for ‘breaking talk guidelines’
I understand deleting spam or pointless personal attacks, but I’ve had posts deleted for posting an unpopular opinion about something… some of the terminally offended read it, clutch their pearls and then report. I’m not sure if MNHQ has the time to read every post they delete or if the mod themselves ends up feeling offended by an unpopular opinion and deletes the post anyway.

We are all grown ups and can surely read things on the internet without feeling traumatised by them!! Especially if it is just an opinion that differs from your own.

The whole internet is going this way though.

comedycentral · 26/08/2024 18:20

It's annoying but I am glad it's a feature for people to be honest. If a threads causing someone any sort of stress then it's best deleted, you never know how people might be feeling I guess.

StarSlinger · 26/08/2024 18:21

I think it's fine to ask for your own thread to be deleted. Most other forums let you have some sort of control over your posts so you don't have to go begging the admin to remove them,

I'm not sure why anyone cares if people want their threads deleted.

Hectorscalling · 26/08/2024 18:23

I do think MN have changed their stances it used to be very few deletions.

Now it’s all the time. Not sure why their reasoning changed. It used to be ‘you can name change if you don’t want this post associated with you’

I do find that quite a few that are deleted at the request of its author, tend to get re posted with some changes. Then deleted and reposted with changes until op can get people to agree with them.

Or my other suspicion is that people who are trolling do it, once it becomes clear people don’t believe it. Get it deleted rather than Mn deleting it and banning them. Then they can have another go.

It’s irrelevant whether people think you should be able to delete them or not, really. That’s just individual opinion. The fact is that MN’s position has always been that you cannot ask for a thread to be removed, but now they are allowing it without there having been any communication about a change to the site rules. Delete them or don’t delete them, that’s up to MN to decide, but the clear position should be communicated to users.

I don’t really care, it’s more that HQ has changed its stance. It used to be that you had to have a good reason, now they seem to be deleted for any reason.

OP posts:
murasaki · 26/08/2024 18:26

I do like the fact that that the deletion messages specify the reasons though, so we can draw our own conclusions from the ones where it was at the poster's request.

CrazyCubicZirconia · 26/08/2024 18:27

This reply has been deleted

This has been deleted by MNHQ for breaking our Talk Guidelines - previously banned poster.

I'm annoyed when a thread is deleted and a message comes up saying 'whilst we look into it .

Nobody's looking into, it's just been deleted.

Either that or the person in charge of looking into things is the world's worst employee and has never actually reached a conclusion

Yes, they never reappear. I think there should be a TAAT topic that dies after 24 hours where you can just speculate on ones that get pulled. Or MN actually just say what found when they "looked into it".

CallMeFlo · 26/08/2024 18:35

That MIL thread being deleted like that annoyed me. Clearly the thread didn't go the way she expected & that's why she wanted it removed. Personally I don't think that's grounds for deleting a thread

pictoosh · 26/08/2024 18:40

I think people should have their thread deletion request honoured whatever the reason.
I think simply changing your mind is reason enough, never mind it being outing or set upon by vipers.

It's a free chat forum. Why would anyone want to keep opening posts up against the author's will?

Westfacing · 26/08/2024 18:40

It makes you reluctant to contribute to a thread - seems you wasted your time when the thread gets withdrawn because the OP is upset. If it's a family drama, or something serious, well fair enough remove the thread if the OP has second thoughts.

But there was a thread the other day about someone having a John Lewis gift list for a house-warming party and 30th birthday; the OP got a bit of a pasting as it was seen as being grabby - the thread was withdrawn as it was causing the OP some upset!

And that's a good enough reason for asking for a thread deletion.

I don't really care if a thread gets deleted if I've posted on it. I just move on.It's a chat forum, nothing more.

And therein lies the problem. People want to be agreed with. Not told they are in the wrong, lest it upset them
