Sainsburys Toilets

I have no words to describe the toilets in Sainsbury's.
I walked in and the smell was disgusting, I try to avoid but in general I think why shouldn't a big Supermarket have clean toilets! So maybe every other month or at stations I use public toilets.
Anyway I walk into the 2nd cubicle surprised there is only two for a large store in a small popular city..
The toilet was clean I suppose but to the corner of my eye I couldn't help but see the open toilet brush and it was stuff out of nightmares. 😫
I was almost in shock and after 10 seconds thought no I can't use the toilet.
I wasn't quite at the absolutely desperate stage. But even so the fucking smell!!!
Afterwards I could barely walk round the store to get the minimum I needed.
Yuk yuk 😷 🤢 🤮
SAINSBURY'S toilets need burning down. The taps to the toilets to the doors going into. Gross.

Sainsbury's always have grim toilets for some reason. My local Tesco, Waitrose and Asda all manage to have relatively decent ones.

I don ‘t shop at Sainsbury’s but never thought of them as downmarket.

Exactly. Your toilets at home are probably used 4 times a day per person if you are out most of the day. Then probably double that if at home all day.

Supermarket toilets are used about 15-18 times an hour - so about 200 times in a 15 hour trade day (7am-10pm).

So a supermarket toilet is used ten times more frequently than a toilet at home.

Plus the older people produce stronger smelling wee adds to the stinking

Oh come on now. I am used to both the casual and deliberate ageism on MN, but this - old people have stronger smelling wee so are by default responsible for the state of supermarket toilets? That, my friend is an ageism too far.

Though your other point about how often supermarket toilets are used compared to home toilets is perfectly valid.

pretzel1212 · 26/08/2024 09:16

They only pay then to be cleaned once a day these days. All about saving money.

Towerofsong · 26/08/2024 09:17

Same at Costa, every one I have ever been to has disgusting toilets. I really, really hope the staff don't use them but I guess they probably do....

Coastalcreeksider · 26/08/2024 09:20

One of the cashiers in the local Morrisons told me that often within an hour of the supermarket being open, the toilets are absolutely disgusting.

I don't regularly shop there and have never used their toilets but if they are not checked very regularly, then the smell is going to get a lot worse over the course of a day.

People can't help having to use the facilities, some of them may suffer from bowel conditions too which doesn't help but if I ever have to use public toilets, I never expect them to smell of roses. Even M&S that I did use a couple of weeks ago had a rather noticeable pong on going in.

oakleaffy · 26/08/2024 09:30

I pity the poor person who has to clean this literal shit.

Humans are disgusting.

I'd rather hang on in desperation rather than use a public lavatory - so often they stink.

Years ago there used to be lavatory attendants in department stores who checked each cubicle as the customer left- that at least hopefully made people not piss on the seats or floor or leave their stinking turd in the loo without flushing it.

Really public lavatories need to be designed where they can be hosed down like the biohazards they are.

orangetree1999 · 26/08/2024 09:37

If anyone at Sainsbury's is reading this please also deal with your Dorridge store.

PrettyPinkShoes · 26/08/2024 09:43

Not sure how anyone can generalise.

I've used some in a Sainsbury on a retail park in Northumberland and it was immaculate.

What shocks me is how many women use the loos and walk out without washing their hands. Straight out to touch food.....some of which they will look at and put back on the shelves.

And people who walk out and don't flush. You only have to wait a few minutes for the cistern to fill up again before you leave and then you can flush.

PrettyPinkShoes · 26/08/2024 09:45

The issue is that very few if any store loos have windows that can be opened.

As someone who does have a bowel issue, with urgency, I am just grateful for ANY loo unless it's absolutely filthy and thankfully I've never seen one- or if it is the cubicle next to it is usually ok.

Agreed- it's revolting the amount of women who don't wash their hands after using the loo- they then put their turdy/pissy germy hands on the door handle to get out.
I use a tissue to touch the door handle after washing hands as the thought is just so gross.

VickyEadieofThigh · 26/08/2024 09:56

Our most local M & S simply food used to have 3 women's toilets in a separate room, men's (no idea how many cubicles or if urinals as well) and a disabled one. Then they changed to 4 mixed-sex cubicles and 2 disabled ones.

The result? All the mixed-sex (I can't comment on the disabled ones) are absolutely filthy and seats and floors are covered in piss. Yes, I've complained.

I also think some people do flush but do not bother to check that everything is gone.

Yes, precisely. A 5 year old could’ve written this.

zingally · 26/08/2024 11:39

The toilets in my local Sainsburys are okay. Probably haven't been in them for a year-ish though.

Not always true, our local Aldi customer toilets are always clean. It is in a generally very well heeled town though.

user1471538275 · 26/08/2024 11:49

This is an issue in all toilets open to the public.

I think you're unreasonable and wrong to say it's only Sainsburys.

It's not them nor their staff that have created this issue - it's the public, who may not even be customers that have done so.

Would you prefer they had no toilets at all? Given how sharply supermarkets seem to be cutting staff they might decide customer toilets are not worth the hassle of cleaning and maintaining them - then we all lose out.

Rail at the revolting individuals that have left the toilets in this state instead.

Nellieinthebarn · 26/08/2024 11:53

Of course its the people who use the loos fault, and of course its not only Sainsbury's and not all Sainsburys are like that, but also Sainsbury's made 996 million last year, so they could employ some cleaners to keep their loos clean.

TheLocust · 26/08/2024 11:55

Me too. No point washing your hands if you're going to touch the door handle on the way out. If it opens outwards I shove it open with my shoulder.

AFmammaG · 26/08/2024 11:58

I’ll never forget the time I pushed open the disabled toilet door in Tesco (to use the baby change table) and there was a man in there wanking.

Absolutely stuff of nightmares.

Nsky62 · 26/08/2024 13:37

YourHangryQuail · 26/08/2024 02:08

I complained at Park Royal Asda toilets. They had no toilet seats in the women’s toilets. No toilet roll. I ended up using the baby change that had a toilet in there

Why a pack of pocket pack tissues is always handy, I always carry two, one to give away if needed, an ex contact lenses wearer.

Ahhh……….he could have locked the door

Tryingtokeepgoing · 26/08/2024 13:50

I think there are three problems.

First, on the whole the general public are revolting and incapable of treating things with respect. All forms of human life use supermarkets, and I expect that the majority who use their lavatories are at the disorganised and messy end of the spectrum. Everyone else knows how bad they are and plans around it.

Secondlyas almost all public conveniences have been closed, those businesses that do still provide them end up providing a public service without being paid for it.

Thidly, as almost everyone who works I in a supermarket is paid at or near the national living wage I can completely see why they wouldn’t put much effort into maintaining standards. Would anyone clean up excrement and piss for £11 whatever an hour? And as many are just kids, they probably don’t even do that at home.

NatalieIsFreezing · 26/08/2024 13:52

Nsky62 · 26/08/2024 13:38

He would only have done that if he wanted to be sure a person/child didn't see him.

jasmine465 · 26/08/2024 14:09

Our local Sainsbury's loos are also the stuff of nightmares. It's a shame, because it's definitely my preferred supermarket of the six or so we have available, as well as being the closest to home! The store itself seems really nicely kept, always clean with nice displays etc but the toilets are absolutely revolting - small cubicles so you can barely turn around, cracked or missing tiles, loo seat hanging off, no toilet roll, no soap and/or no working hand dryer and invariably a used tampon on the floor for all and sundry. Absolute filth. Other supermarkets seem to take much more pride in their toilets - the Tesco ones are reasonably modern and while they might sometimes be unclean, it looks like recent mess rather than weeks of poor hygiene standards.

Listen up, Sainsbury's! This seems to be a trend.
