To not view this house

Name changed as I've spoken about this a lot in real life so don't want other posts linked.

DH wants to view this property. It is in the area we want and he loves it from the outside. I hate how it is set up, think it's really over priced and can't imagine how we would use the space.

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/150168083#/?channel=RES_BUY

Currently we are in a smaller property and I think we'd need to spend a lot to "fill" this house. I worry our current sofas etc. wouldn't fit. Looks like the family there now had the same issue. Lots of badly matched furniture round the sides of the rooms has honestly put me off.

There are 4 of us so the bedrooms would be good. The living areas, dining rooms etc. looks like too much dead space. Not a cosy feel at all has made me unable to see what I could do.
He is keen to go and view but I don't think that would help me get a view of what it could be, just more what it is.

Gut feeling is a no. Possible too much money considering I'd want to re do all the windows, the bathroom etc. But interested on opinions and what ideas for making this a home, other people have please.

I would view, especially if you are at the start of your search. You get a sense of market, pros and cons etc.alsophitos are with distorted lens so may not be as big and empty as it looks. And it is a gesture of openness to your DH's opinions. If you are afraid he will browbeat you into buying a property you don't like, then you obviously have bigger problems. But otherwise, there's very little cost in going? Viewing unexpected properties (if the core fundamentals match your needs)can either shift or reinforce your conviction of what you want. Both of these can be useful.

clary · 25/08/2024 11:59

Yes I agree with those who say they clearly have someone with higher needs or a wheelchair user living there, so I presume they need space and access in rooms and maybe less clutter and cosyness to enable ease of movement.

I agree the kitchen is grim but easily changed.

There's lots of space and you could make it your own @Elaine222 . I'm from that neck of the woods and you do get a lot of space for your money. If that's what you want to spend I think it's worth a look. Are you in South Lincs currently?

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 25/08/2024 11:59

That is a large house and bigger than I would go for. We are also a family of 4 and in a house of 220 sq metres which is a large house. An extra 100 sq m means it is overly big in my mind. Large rooms are really hard to furnish and then you will end up with rooms that you never enter (2 guest bedrooms a study and a separate dining room)

The garden is also very big, which some will love, but others will find a massive chore. The time needed to cut that lawn!

For family harmony I would go and look at it, but it wouldn’t be the right house for me.

Aligirlbear · 25/08/2024 11:59

Personally I think it has potential if you can see beyond the existing decor and furniture layout. It looks like someone living there has significant needs and uses a large wheelchair hence the layout - currently very wheelchair friendly with all the furniture “out of the way” . It won’t be perfect but no house ever is - why not have a viewing - it will be easier to make your point to DH if you have seen it and still don’t like it based on fact not some photos. EAs photos are often not truly representative as they are often taken at odd angles.

LivelyGoldOrca · 25/08/2024 11:59

What a great price. It would be double that at least where we are. That home just needs a different layout. You cant get mortagages when you are old easily so this may be a now or never. Pro and con list maybe? Both of you and kids sit down to do? Look at that garden!

GettingTricky · 25/08/2024 11:59

I'd also view it. It looks like a lovely house with a large, not overlooked, garden.

We looked at lots of houses and most if them were close to our wishlist, but we didn't like them. One house ticked everything, but my husband said no as soon as we walked through the door!

The house we bought just felt right when we walked in, but didn't look overly promising from the estate agents' details.

WingsofRain · 25/08/2024 12:00

Apart from the hideous kitchen I really like it. Accessible houses are so rare and the garden looks a lovely size.

You aren’t buying the furniture, you need to see through that and imagine how your stuff would look in there, plus repainted walls and so on.

However if you really aren’t keen it would probably be better to let it go to a wheelchair user who would make good use of the space and the fantastic bathroom.

godmum56 · 25/08/2024 12:01

I'd view it! The two things you can't change about a house are location and space. Unless its a price issue, I'd never go for less space, cosy is easy to create. I'd want that freestanding bath out but not immediately. Why do you want to change the windows? Apart from the actual house I think that its a good rule when househunting to agree to view anthing the other person wants to unless there is a serious reason for not. eg can't afford, totally wrong area, house is a wreck and you don't want a fixer upper. I mean what have you got to lose?

Shoxfordian · 25/08/2024 12:02

There's no harm in going to look, it can feel different when you're there - you can like something in pictures and not like it in reality or the other way round

Verbena17 · 25/08/2024 12:02

There will be much better set out houses situated in and around Peterborough.

I personally think there are way too many windows downstairs - making placement of storage and furniture too tricky.

I'd get rid of quite a lot of the lawn and have shrubs and trees.

user1471556818 · 25/08/2024 12:03

I would definitely go and see it .looks like lots of space and potential

Poppins21 · 25/08/2024 12:03

I think the current owners furniture layout does the house no favours and makes it feel like lots of wasted space. But it has the bones of being a lovely family home. I would view it and maybe plan how you as a family could use the space. So for example -the bedrooms would look better if they were zoned using rugs so it feels cozy and just not “too big a room” for a small double bed.

I really dislike the kitchen so I would want to offer £30k less to fix it but that’s just me! So that’s why I would feel it’s over priced.

But I prefer doer uppers so I don’t have to pay over the odds for others taste in decor. Good luck with the search

SilverDoe · 25/08/2024 12:03

The house reminds me of when I was a kid and I would play the sims and custom build my own houses and hav absolutely gigantic rooms that were 10x too big; way out of scale to the furniture you wanted in the room.

OP YANBU

godmum56 · 25/08/2024 12:03

PS OP why are you worrying about SOFAS?????

ProfessorPeppy · 25/08/2024 12:04

My DH grew up in a village near Crowland and seems to think it has a bad rep?? The house looks lovely, it would cost a million where we live!

Verbena17 · 25/08/2024 12:05

This is a better layout it seems…

Hate the decor but the floor plan is ideal.

Verbena17 · 25/08/2024 12:08

Or this one near Stamford (such a beautiful historic market town, way nicer than Crowland and this house is 20 mins from Peterborough)

It can't hurt to go look at it, he may well hate it in reality, you can never tell from photos.

RosesAndHellebores · 25/08/2024 11:37

It's spacious and well laid out. The garden is very large. The vendors are selling a house and the purchasers must evaluate It's potential to be their home.

The only deal breaker for me is the fact that it's 7.5 miles from a decent station.

Posts like this make me worried about trying to sell my house - around here there are houses that are five or six miles from a made up road, let alone a station!

clary · 25/08/2024 12:09

Those commenting on the low price for that much space - errrr there is a good reason why homes in S Lincs are not so expensive.

My mum moved from that area to the city we live in - when she commented that her four-bed bungalow + big garden allowed her to buy a two-bed + smaller garden in our city suburb, I pointed out that she was a few mins walk or drive or bus ride from all she could ever need.

South Lincs is much less well resourced. Crowland tbf is near enough to Peterborough for that to be your local centre for healthcare and shopping.

Disagree. We have 2700 square feet and use every room every day (apart from the guest bedroom and en suite but they are used a lot when family and friends come to stay). We both WFH so the study and fifth bedroom are used for that. My living room is a similar size to this house and it was easy to furnish and is very cozy now. I love space and if we move again I would want a house of 3200 square feet as a minimum because a couple of rooms are too small in my current house - the utility room and the main bathroom.

Mustthinkofausername · 25/08/2024 12:11

When we were house hunting many years ago, my husband didn't want to see a house that wasn't very attractive on paper. I said fine I'd go on my own. I didn't want the estate agent to think we were going to be super picky and worried we might miss out on seeing other properties as soon as they came up. Hubby grudgingly tagged along. We made an offer on the house within 30 minutes of seeing it and still happily living here 25 years later. I could see past the ugly stuff and knew we could have work done to make it how we wanted.

It's hard to get a sense of a property just from photos. You need to walk around and get a feel for it. At least that's my opinion!

I agree with this
