To not view this house

Name changed as I've spoken about this a lot in real life so don't want other posts linked.

DH wants to view this property. It is in the area we want and he loves it from the outside. I hate how it is set up, think it's really over priced and can't imagine how we would use the space.

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/150168083#/?channel=RES_BUY

Currently we are in a smaller property and I think we'd need to spend a lot to "fill" this house. I worry our current sofas etc. wouldn't fit. Looks like the family there now had the same issue. Lots of badly matched furniture round the sides of the rooms has honestly put me off.

There are 4 of us so the bedrooms would be good. The living areas, dining rooms etc. looks like too much dead space. Not a cosy feel at all has made me unable to see what I could do.
He is keen to go and view but I don't think that would help me get a view of what it could be, just more what it is.

Gut feeling is a no. Possible too much money considering I'd want to re do all the windows, the bathroom etc. But interested on opinions and what ideas for making this a home, other people have please.

The decor is so off-putting (those kitchen cabinets!) that I think you need to see it in person with someone who can picture living in it.

gotmychristmasmiracle · 25/08/2024 11:15

Think it's one of those cameras that make the rooms look bigger than what they actually are, but if it's not in the location you want I wouldn't bother.

NeedToAskPlease · 25/08/2024 11:17

You don't have to full a house straight away - it's much better to live in it first to see how best to use the rooms.

The downstairs rooms in my house have changed usage over time - especially as the children have grown-up. For example one room was the playroom...then became an extra sitting area...then became my youngest sons gaming room....and now it's my home gym.

The official dining room was that to start with, then changed to the playroom ... and now it's my oldest sons gaming area.

This house has so much potential and just because they label rooms as certain things ie lounge, study etc....it doesn't mean you have to use it as that

The bones of the house are nice so I would go see it. However don’t overpay for the renovated status here as much of that looks unfashionable or cheap, e.g. the deep raised shower tray, plastic bath, the vibrant kitchen that screams B&Q even if it’s not, the kitchen tiles. There’s a lot here that I’d want to pull out and start again which feels wrong given how new it is.
When we moved into a much bigger house from tiny flats/houses, we just shut some doors and kept the rooms empty until we could afford to furnish. I think that’s pretty normal!

GG1975 · 25/08/2024 11:17

I also think it's worth a look in person. I hated the house we are in when I saw It online but said I'd come with DH to have a look.
The minute I walked in I could see what we could do with the space and now I love it.

Those photos are all stretched, so the rooms and spacing look a lot bigger than they are in reality.

They are straightened not stretched. So a wide angle lens has been used and the photos straightened in photoshop so all verticals are actually vertical. It gives a very unnatural feel and makes part look stretched.

Mymanyellow · 25/08/2024 11:19

I like it. Kitchen colour is awful but I expect you could change doors even spray those ones.
Always worth a look I think. If you don’t like it then don’t buy it I guess.

Miffylou · 25/08/2024 11:20

Very difficult to tell, without knowing your family's ages etc., especially as estate agent photos always make rooms look bigger than they really are and I can’t see any measurements. I agree that the photos make it look cold and drab but it would look very different with different furnishings. If you can afford it and it’s in the area you want, I can’t see any good reason for not going to look at it.

Instaflan · 25/08/2024 11:21

YABU to not even entertain something your husband is keen on. Photos often make spaces look a lot different to how they are in person. You have nothing to lose by looking at it.

In regards to the space, there is clearly someone at the property who needs assistance so it is possible the current owners have purposely set up their furniture to allow for a wheelchair to be easily manoeuvred, or something along those lines. I can see loads of potential how the living room could be set up. You don’t need to have furniture shoved against a wall.

Molga · 25/08/2024 11:23

View it. Give your DH's opinion that much credit. If you hate it after seeing it in person, fair enough.

As PPs have said, I think the "vast expanse of floor" shots are camera lens.

MendaciousMabel · 25/08/2024 11:23

Huge amounts of potential, I prefer cosiness too but you'd have to throw a lot of money at it I think to achieve that.

dollopz · 25/08/2024 11:23

I’d go look at it, it has potential.

Sidebeforeself · 25/08/2024 11:23

Whats the harm in looking? It will either only confirm your opinion , or if you like it - result! Your DH might change his mind too when he sees it.

Starlingexpress · 25/08/2024 11:24

As long as your husband also refuses to ho and see houses that you want to view if he doesn’t like the details.

I don’t actually believe that you can ever grt a true sense of a house without viewing it.

Trethew · 25/08/2024 11:24

Go and see it. If the same house had been photographed with pictures on the walls, bunches of flowers, furniture more comfortably placed and a softer range of colours I don’t think you would be so put off. Looks like a well-designed building in good condition with bags of potential. Give it a chance.

Echobelly · 25/08/2024 11:27

I'd see it - sometimes those wide-angle estate agent photos make everything seem rather 'barren' and empty but it will probably feel more 'human scale' in person, so it's worth a look.

Yes, it'll need a lot of updating but it has a lot of potential.

Sheeplesss · 25/08/2024 11:28

Go and view it, whats the harm?
It looks cheaply done and the design is really poor.
But have a look anyway.

The fridge freezer looks very odd indeed, like it’s leaning against the wall, and who needs 4 ovens?

RaspberryWhirls · 25/08/2024 11:28

Fabulous property with lots of potential, I would definitely view it to rule it in or out. Pictures only tell you so much, you need to see it for yourself to gauge dimensions.

TappyGilmore · 25/08/2024 11:28

To me it needs an enormous amount of redecoration/renovation but I actually quite like it and think it has a lot of potential. It’s lovely from the outside, and the garden looks nice. So it really depends on whether you have the funds and the inclination to do the work. If you are looking for something that is move-in ready, this probably wouldn’t be it.

GRex · 25/08/2024 11:29

The floorplan looks fine. You don't need to keep their old sofas and keep them in the exact same spot they are now. You buy your own paint, floorboards, sofas and fit your own shelves, change kitchen cupboard doors etc. Have you never moved into somewhere unfurnlshed before to do this? You can get an interior designer if you really don't have any style ideas.

ThinWomansBrain · 25/08/2024 11:31

estate agent photos make even the pokiest of places look cavernous and huge.
If it's close to where you live now, a viewing would take half an hour - at least if you see properties that each of you like its a starting point to find out what you'll need to compromise on.

MoveToParis · 25/08/2024 11:32

It does look like there is a disabled person in the current owners family, and my guess is the space is created to allow for that.

I have no idea how it measures up to others locally but I think it’s a lovely house- although the kitchen is not for me.

BaronessBomburst · 25/08/2024 11:33

I really like the house. It's spacious and well laid out.
The decor and kitchen are terrible but you can change that.
The dining room and family room need swapping around too.
View it and report back!

AbigailisPartiedOut · 25/08/2024 11:33

I would go and see it. As others have said this house looks like it is set up for a resident whith mobility issues so the furniture is not in the natural space you or I may have it, it is desiged for ease of move for power chairs/equipment and maneuvering. No clutter and minimal practical furniture.

The decor is not to my taste but I can see great potential. Plus you'd never get a place like that for that price where I live!!
