To not view this house

Name changed as I've spoken about this a lot in real life so don't want other posts linked.

DH wants to view this property. It is in the area we want and he loves it from the outside. I hate how it is set up, think it's really over priced and can't imagine how we would use the space.

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/150168083#/?channel=RES_BUY

Currently we are in a smaller property and I think we'd need to spend a lot to "fill" this house. I worry our current sofas etc. wouldn't fit. Looks like the family there now had the same issue. Lots of badly matched furniture round the sides of the rooms has honestly put me off.

There are 4 of us so the bedrooms would be good. The living areas, dining rooms etc. looks like too much dead space. Not a cosy feel at all has made me unable to see what I could do.
He is keen to go and view but I don't think that would help me get a view of what it could be, just more what it is.

Gut feeling is a no. Possible too much money considering I'd want to re do all the windows, the bathroom etc. But interested on opinions and what ideas for making this a home, other people have please.

OP posts:

I agree with you op, I prefer cosy to spacious.

VanCleefArpels · 25/08/2024 11:34

Your opinion on a house doesn’t trump your husband’s. If he wants to look then go look. You might be surprised, he might be disappointed. The photos are not necessarily showing the actual size of the rooms

PolePrince55 · 25/08/2024 11:35

I think it's only cosmetic and most houses will be that you buy.
You could pick up second hand furniture pieces as you go along x

Try it.

I said I didn't like my wedding dress when she held it up and she told me to try it and I loved it, 15 years later I still love it.

Booobs · 25/08/2024 11:36

Eh? I mean it’s presented and photographed terribly, but as a PP has pointed out, I suspect that the family are caring for a child with additional needs, so it’s probably not their priority, and the agents are at fault for not advising them better.

The rooms are totally unremarkably sized - kitchen is only 5.45 x 4.68, lounge is long but just need zoning better. What it needs is someone with a bit of imagination and inclination towards interiors - is this you? If so, go and look. If not, don’t bother. It’s got absolutely heaps of potential and looks in great condition, especially outside.

Absolutely no idea why you’d be replacing all the window either…

Mysinglepringle · 25/08/2024 11:37

As a former estate agent, its mainly shitty photos. You may not like it anyway, but they've made all the rooms look a lot bigger than they are.

RosesAndHellebores · 25/08/2024 11:37

It's spacious and well laid out. The garden is very large. The vendors are selling a house and the purchasers must evaluate It's potential to be their home.

The only deal breaker for me is the fact that it's 7.5 miles from a decent station.

Tel12 · 25/08/2024 11:38

You need to view. The photos are always deceptive. Assuming you can afford it if course.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 25/08/2024 11:40

The family currently living there clearly have a disabled child who uses a wheelchair which is probably why all of the furniture is placed around the side of the room, there needs to be lots of space so that it is easy to move the wheelchair around the room, to use equipment such as the mobile hoist and to transfer between equipment such as chair and standing frame. If you don’t have accessibility issues you could easily fill the space by having furniture which goes into the space, for example a lounger sofa and coffee tables etc and you wouldn’t have to place everything at the edges to keep a clear floor space.

It might not be the house for you but I think it’s worth viewing, it might feel different once you’ve seen it and even if not it will help you and DH to get a feel for what you both like and dislike in a property moving forward.

Portfun24 · 25/08/2024 11:40

I wouldn't let the owners not knowing how to dress their house put you off. In that lounge the settess shouldn't be pushed against the wall like that they should be brought in away from the walls with a coffee table in the middle, looks like they have them back as there's kids playing. I think there's lots of great space. Can't comment on price as don't know the area. I'd love it but it's up to you, I'd at least go view it if my partner felt strongly. A place can feel different in person than in images.

TheSquareMile · 25/08/2024 11:41

@Elaine222

I would go and view it, to be honest. You could discover positives, such as the location, which hadn't occurred to you.

Once the furniture has gone and you have redecorated to your taste, it could look fabulous!

As I looked at the photos, it struck me how lovely it would be at Christmas - imagine so much space and the opportunity to make it look truly beautiful!

Pixiewombat · 25/08/2024 11:43

It looks a bit unloved atm (tho I assume the owners would disagree) but yes, lots of potential.

mynameiscalypso · 25/08/2024 11:43

If I could spend my life viewing properties, I would. We were on holiday in LA once and on a Sunday, they had open viewings of some of the houses for sale. I loved it!

nottoplan · 25/08/2024 11:45

I really like the house , it’s spacious but not overly , bearing in mind the current owner has needs that require the furniture and fixings to be suitable for them to move about and access rooms , You would be placing your furniture how you would like it rather than just around the edges of the room

It looks very well maintained but you would want minor changes such as changing the colour on the kitchen units , removing ceiling hoists etc ( they will probably remove and take these anyway )

have a look at previously sold houses on there , this is no 11 and sold August 2019 (just before Covid and the huge price increase ) for £550k as did number 9 which last sold April 2019 , I think an increase of 100k (+/-20% ) over that period is actually quite low - in many areas houses have increased by 100% +

have a look around the photos of number 9 , same size & layout , but you might prefer how the space is used , to give you a better idea of how you can use it

well worth a viewing

on a personal note if I didn’t need all the bedrooms I might be tempted to use the smallest one to divide in half for shower rooms to serve the two bedrooms either side

Sewsewsew · 25/08/2024 11:47

Not looked at the house as just off out. But maybe walls need ‘going back up’ if been removed, or altered to give a better layout. Maybe take an architect to view it with you.

im rather a fan of love it or list it and your home made perfect programs as they are very inspiring.

and if it’s large enough def have a walk in pantry for me, I’d sooooo love one of those!

BiscuityBoyle · 25/08/2024 11:47

It looks odd due to the layout but you could make it work. You don’t need to fill it with furniture all at once. It’ll take time to see how the space works for you. All the bedrooms are a decent size, which is unusual.

GinToBegin · 25/08/2024 11:47

I’d happily view that. i don’t like the wild colour in the kitchen, but wouldn’t let that put me off. Some rugs would make a huge difference throughout, but clearly not an option for the current owners.

Sure, it’s not particularly well presented, but my goodness, there’s a lot to work with.

sleekcat · 25/08/2024 11:50

I would view it anyway. You don't have to have sofas all around the edges, you can use them to section off part of a room and make the room multifunctional. Personally, I would kill for the extra space! You could have a lounge/diner if you wanted and use the other room for something else entirely. Big bedrooms are great for children as they get older - we actually decided bedrooms were too big in a house we viewed and not 'cosy' but now, with teenagers, wish we had them. It's swings and roundabouts as that house would have seen us declined a place at our current school, but we didn't know that then.

Trixiefirecracker · 25/08/2024 11:51

Awful house. Big no from me.

HelenWheels · 25/08/2024 11:53

its got quite a lot of floor space
your dc can cartwheel around the house. mine would

ChristmasCwtch · 25/08/2024 11:53

The decor is horrible, but it’s got a lot of potential. You’re being unreasonable to discount a house based on photos alone.

You can redecorate, have the kitchen units resprayed, change the flooring, rip out the fireplace. The bones of the house and the setting/garden are good.

Misthios · 25/08/2024 11:53

If it's not for you, it's not for you. A house purchase is a big decision and it has to be right for everyone.

Personally I could not live with that kitchen and it would have to be ripped right out or at least repainted. It also doesn't come across as a loved family home, no artwork on any of the walls, just paint. Very odd.

Floralnomad · 25/08/2024 11:54

It’s not decorated to my taste but I’d view it because the rooms look a great size and that means you can work with it IMO , it has huge potential to be lovely .

Itsallsostressful · 25/08/2024 11:56

Trixiefirecracker · 25/08/2024 11:51

Awful house. Big no from me.

A bit mean 😕!!!

OP I think it has lots of potential and it's set out for someone with mobility needs so you need to bare that in mind.

I've never experienced such a big house but would imagine the fun of planning what it could become for your family. Anyway think it's only fair to your DH to at least view it.

JMSA · 25/08/2024 11:58

I don't particularly like what they've done with the place, but it could be a wonderful family home.

queenofthebongo · 25/08/2024 11:59

Kitchen cupboard colours are awful, and I would swap things - place the dining room in the conservatory/family room. I would then have the dining room as the tv room/snug and then use the main lounge with sofas placed around the fire with a coffee table (as someone mentioned) and I would have walls of books and no tv there. I would definitely view it.
