Please mechanically describe how you dance - got told I dance funny

So I get my bounce from being on my tip toes and going up and down. Knees are slightly bent but they are fixed. As I bounce I stick a hip out. One hip out/bounce per beat. And just do generic arms in the air.

Someone told me I dance differently to everyone else and now I’m scared. Just realised everybody gets that bounce from bent knees.

Now I’m bloody paranoid.

I’m 30 and know I’m not an amazing dancer. But like to be social/have fun. I’m not doing the worm in a dance battle just enough to participate

How rude and nasty saying you dance 'funny.' Hmm

Do they dance like fucking Ginger Rogers?!

Keep dancing like nobody's watching @Codat !!!

savethatkitty · 20/08/2024 00:12

Come on ....

Sweetteaplease · 20/08/2024 00:19

You can't describe how you dance in words surely? That's like describing what a fruit tastes like or what music sounds like?

GoadyMcBigot · 20/08/2024 00:20

I make the Birdy Dance look like the Strictly winner.

JanglyBeads · 20/08/2024 00:30

So your feet stay rooted to one spot?

Bobbotgegrinch · 20/08/2024 00:37

Who cares if you dance differently to everyone else?

That's what dance is, it's a way to express yourself, your uniqueness.

I know I look like an absolute plonker when I dance, but I don't care, it's not like I can see myself. I dance because I'm having fun, because I want to share an experience with the people I'm with, (and mostly I dance because I'm drunk)

Singing and dancing are the two best ways I've found to announce to the world "I'm alive". I'm objectively bad at both of them, but I'm not stopping just because the odd person thinks I'm a bit weird.

TheHateIsNotGood · 20/08/2024 00:45

Does anyone remember the days when you'd go to a local 'gig' and the band were playing fiercely and yet everyone was to embarassed too dance?

I was that unembarassed solo dancer doing her thing like a Dancing Punk Queen.

I rest my case.

ManhattanPopcorn · 20/08/2024 00:45

Your dance move sounds really unusual tbh.

DreamThrum · 20/08/2024 10:07

I'm okay with the bottom half but feel my arms are under utilised, any tips for these?

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2024 10:31

This thread has made my morning!

"Poking flies"

"Python shedding its skin"

😂

Your dancing sounds fine.

I'm not sure I have a particular way. But sadly I'm self conscious so it's not as free and easy as some people.

I'm better off when something with dance moves comes on - I'm a pro at the Macarena Grin

KimberleyClark · 20/08/2024 10:48

I sway at the hip with arms bent, keeping foot movement to a minimum. Was once told you should move your body not your feet.

zingally · 20/08/2024 10:54

I had to get up and follow your instructions to see how it worked! 😂

Doing it on tip-toes is a bit odd. Perhaps other people think you look wobbly/unbalanced? I wasn't very stable trying to dance on my tiptoes!

Maybe just put your feet down flat and bend your knees instead?

Lots of people do the side-step dance. Step, together, step, together, in alternate directions, with perhaps a bit of hip-shimmy on each step out?

But honestly, as long as you're having fun and enjoying the music, who cares what other people think?!

AmandaHoldensLips · 20/08/2024 11:01

The older I get, the better I get at dancing. Particularly "Le Freak" by Chic and various other dance moves, which I like to intersperse with Contemporary Interpretive Dance mime actions and the occasional Vogue with my hands framed around my face.

Meanwhile, DH looks like he's doing Extreme Yoga for Grandads while simultaneously wobbling his head a lot.

If dancing on tip toes is odd then all those women in heels must look odd too.

hiboufly · 20/08/2024 12:24

I can't visualise the tiptoes thing. I do something like that as a warm up exercise at the barre.

I just copy vaguely what other people are doing when there's dancing at parties. I take regular dance classes, but those are in tap, ballet and contemporary, so dancing to pop music isn't my forte.

Look up some YouTube videos if you're considering something like that.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 20/08/2024 12:43

Goth here. Lots of two step and arm waving. Occasional demon summoning. Headbanging but only if I've got ibuprofen in the house for the next day. And sometimes I have to hold onto a stationary object for that these days. Also depends on footwear and available space. Best to just do what your body tells you I reckon, and don't give a stuff about anyone watching- I always assume nobody is!

spikeandbuffy24 · 20/08/2024 12:44

I found a video of me dancing from my university years and it became quite apparent why I needed spinal surgery

I've just realised while watching YouTube on the sofa that I kind of do a side to side jiggle and wave my arms while shrugging my shoulders when sat down. Yet I barely move my arms or torso when dancing stood up, it's all about the pogoing. Perhaps at the next gig I should try to incorporate this move 🤔

SharpWriter · 20/08/2024 16:36

How rude! As long as you're enjoying yourself, who cares

CanadianJohn · 20/08/2024 17:06

I used to love to dance, though I was terrible at it. I ain't got no rhythm. I used to sort of jog on the spot, waving my arms, with a stupid grin on my face.

Ah yes, the good old days.
