So I get my bounce from being on my tip toes and going up and down. Knees are slightly bent but they are fixed. As I bounce I stick a hip out. One hip out/bounce per beat. And just do generic arms in the air.

Someone told me I dance differently to everyone else and now I’m scared. Just realised everybody gets that bounce from bent knees.

Now I’m bloody paranoid.

I’m 30 and know I’m not an amazing dancer. But like to be social/have fun. I’m not doing the worm in a dance battle just enough to participate

Slutdrop

BeerForMyHorses · 19/08/2024 21:13

I've just followed your instructions in the mirror and I look like a constipated chicken.

Hateam · 19/08/2024 21:16

I put my left foot in
I take my left foot out
I repeat this 4 times then I shake it all about.

I do the hokey cokey ( difficult to describe this bit to be honest. The exact nature is highly dependent on how much alcohol I've consumed in the previous 2 hours)

I then turn around.

That's pretty much what it's all about.

Notimeforaname · 19/08/2024 21:19

I'm a dancer and I just stood up to try your technique, at first I couldn't get it but now I do and I know people who dance like this (including my dad 🤣)so you're fine! 🤣 ignore this loser.

Every single person moves their own way, what matters is you feel good and have fun when you do it!!
Anyway, nobody wants to dance on a night out with someone who actually knows what theyre doing, that's not fun! Its the people who dance and dont give a shit that makes the party.

I bet the person who told you that is self conscious and they are probably projecting a bit.

rainsofcastamere · 19/08/2024 21:25

I was once told I danced like Sexual Harassment Panda from South Park!

Ihaveaquestionn · 19/08/2024 21:29

For anyone who is insecure or doesn’t think they can dance - the best advice I ever heard was to just move as if you are writing your name with your hips … try it if you don’t believe me 😄

BeEasyonYourself · 19/08/2024 21:32

I generally pogo when out (I mostly go to punk gigs and love a mosh pit!) which sounds not dissimilar to your dance OP - just with a bit more bouncing into other people (all in good humour!).

At home I just kind of bop around when cooking dinner - again sounds quite similar to you! Or do a kind of shuffle if I'm listening to ska.

I really don't care what I look like and nor should you 😊

Dobest · 19/08/2024 21:34

It's like this- you shake it to the left, you shake it to the right,

You do the hippy shake-shake with all of your might.

BurntBroccoli · 19/08/2024 21:34

I'm getting Boobah vibes from your description which is completely fine!

Slutdrop

At 52 I can still slutdrop
Cant slutgetbackupagain though

WetBandits · 19/08/2024 21:37

Depends entirely on the occasion. Sometimes it’ll be Neil’s robot dance à la Inbetweeners, sometimes it’ll be White Chicks.

Most often it’s a Carlton, just with far less enthusiasm.

Anitapu · 19/08/2024 21:47

@Hoppinggreen

that is fantastic!!!!😂

crazyunicornlady73 · 19/08/2024 22:11

Love this thread, I'm standing in a long queue and trying to follow your instructions so I can do the codat dance too...I am getting some odd looks but I don't care!

Whoever told you that you dance funny can piss off, dancing is about moving to the music and unless you belong to the Royal school of ballet or something it doesn't really matter!

charlie brown dancing GIF by Peanuts

I take all my dance moves from this gif and I'm not even joking

35965a · 19/08/2024 22:16

Get your hips moving and the odd slut drop and you’re golden

lmoh · 19/08/2024 22:24

I go crazy, shake my hair, jump around, do whatever feels good! Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks, the fact that they’re focussing on you should tell you they aren’t having a good time themselves

Shodan · 19/08/2024 22:29

In my youth, and wearing trousers, I was a very 'hippy' kind of dancer- swaying, circling, wiggling hips. I also (when drunk enough) used to be able to do the Beyonce hip thrust thing.

Nowadays, if called upon to dance in public, I'm usually wearing a dress (wedding/Christmas party) and do a very ladylike step from side to side thing. Like we used to do around our handbags in the 80s. I don't think I've ever raised my arms above waist level, no matter how I'm dancing.

XH used to (and still does, probably) do a finger pointy dance (index fingers jabbing towards the floor in turn) with a pout on his face. He thought he was an AMAZING dancer. He wasn't -but he had the confidence.

DP, on the other hand, does a sort of walking in place dance and looks like an elegant heron doing it. (He also has The Confidence).

Point is- everyone has their own special way of dancing. Own yours, and have The Confidence. Far better to enjoy yourself than sit meekly on the side, itching to dance but being afraid of looking 'silly'.

elQuintoConyo · 19/08/2024 22:51

Depending on the music, I do variations of the following:

Jimmy Somerville
Dave Gahan
No Good Start the Dance - Prodigy/Keith
Rick Astley's rainmac classic
The Carlton (fresh prince)

I'll bounce, wiggle, throw shapes. I was an 80s child, 90s teen, so I still dance like that. No grace, no lady likeness. Don't care if I have messy hair or I'm all sweaty. Just the opening bars of Let Me Be Your Fantasy* and I'm off!

  • I'll take you hiigherrrrrrrrrrrrrr
AppropriateAdult · 19/08/2024 22:52

I've just had to get out of bed to try the various machinations described here. Turns out I dance exactly like you, OP. Nothing wrong with it.

Runki · 19/08/2024 23:32

Hey, you dance however the heck you like and enjoy it. I was once told that I dance like a drunken aunt at a wedding. The person said it to insult me because he was horrible, but I took it as a compliment. You dance like no one's watching and take no notice of commentators! You should see me dancing....I dance round in a circle whilst pointing in the air....it doesn't get much more embarrassing than that so keep going!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 19/08/2024 23:37

Sorry I can’t link but your post immediately reminded me of a brilliant book I read to all my 3 DC when they were little. It’s called “Giraffes Can’t Dance”. Check it out. You will embrace your own unique style.

MonsteraMama · 19/08/2024 23:40

Not me getting up off the sofa to try and imitate your dance to work out what it looks like.

Hollowvoice · 19/08/2024 23:45

It's just a jump to the left, then a step to the right
With your hands on your hips, bend your knees in tight...

strawberrybarley · 19/08/2024 23:58

@savethatkitty Really distasteful choice of phrase 😡 I guess you've never had to witness one of your tiny, precious children have an epileptic fit.

RagzRebooted · 19/08/2024 23:58

Theimpossiblegirl · 19/08/2024 20:22

Apparently I dance like a beautiful pissed fairy according to teen dd. In a nice way. Wave your heads in the air like you just don't care and dance like noone is watching I say.

That's exactly how I'd describe the way my Mum danced and actually nearly made me cry! I'd love to dance with her one more time, even though she did look like a pissed fairy.

I love to dance and will really throw myself into it, quite happy to dance sober and even alone on the dancefloor (no one wants to be first!). In my head, I have fantastic rhythm and look great. In reality I probably look like a bit of a prat, but I really don't care. We recently went to see a band play an afternoon pub gig, no one was dancing when we arrived because they were still sober so I stormed up there in my black boilersuit (Lucy and Yack jumpsuit but it looks like overalls) and went for it, much to the band's delight. Can't have been too bad as my teens all eventually joined me!

My mum never cared what anyone thought of her dancing and I won't either.
