Neighbours on holiday and left dog in house

And the poor bloody animal has been crying and barking for 24 hours. She has the occasional rest but it’s pretty much constant other than that. They have form for this: worst before this recent episode was leaving the poor dog crying for 12 hours straight when they went out one time. That wasn’t the only time but was previously the worst.

They were reported and notified so they know their dog has separation anxiety. Yet this morning in the early hours the entire family fucks off on holiday - must be a holiday as they all had suitcases - and since they left, that poor dog has been crying.

Someone came in for around twenty minutes earlier today to let the dog in the garden and presumably to feed her. But then they fucked off and since then just non stop crying interspersed with barking. it’s honestly NOT annoying me - it’s making me feel so sad for the dog.

Given they had suitcases this has got to be for at least a week, I know the dog will be fed and let out for twenty minutes a day but it’s so clearly in distress! What would you do? Anything?

Why are you on MN and not calling the RSPCA straightaway

Because: The RSPCA have no right of entry unless the animal has been left alone for 24 hrs. Even then they have to get the police to break in.

csigeek · 20/08/2024 18:21

We had this a few weeks ago with our neighbours, fucked off on holiday and left 3 dogs at home, locked out of the house but with access to the conservatory. The first night one managed to lock itself out with the others still inside and they all barked at each other for 4 hours solid. Neighbours from all around were walking around to see what the fuck was going on. Eventually someone came over about 12.30am and let them in and it was sporadic checking in for a week. These dogs are left like this a lot when neighbours are home as well and we’re all truly fed up of them.
RSPCA will do nothing as they are not neglected if someone is visiting.
Police don’t care.
Noise abatement want months of diaries and proof of contact!
They rent though, almost thankfully, so I have taken to annoying the landlord with complaints in the hope he’ll not renew their tenancy and they fuck off for good!

It is. HTH.

I hate initials. What does 'HTH' stand for?
And if someone is coming to feed the dog and let it out twice a day that is not neglect. Neglect is starving it, not treating a sick animal, hitting it, tying it up in a shed to die, or to just live in its own filth.

No pinching necessary @Grammarnut Barry the cat voted with his paws

Packetofcrispsplease · 20/08/2024 19:01

😭 absolutely awful the poor thing , I’d definitely let RSPCA or another animal charity know .
We have nobody to look after our dog so he goes to immaculately kept boarding kennels where he is spoiled with daily walks and a free run in their beautiful enclosed paddock .
He doesn’t suffer with separation anxiety but that’s possibly his breed ? And the fact we leave him 4 hours absolute maximum ( we are usually only out for 2 hours or so ) if we ever need to all be out and about the same time .

I think maybe that poster means that the RSPCA puts tape on the door, kind of like a crime scene. If the tape is broken then it means someone has attended.

What gives me pause is that someone definitely is coming in to see to the dog at least once a day but the poor girl is so distressed.

What the fuck is wrong with people? I could never do this.

The poster said wait until the people have fed the dog then the stick the tape on the door. RSPCA will come back & think dog has been abandoned & will trigger a rescue.
I agree I'd never dream of leaving my dog for more than 3 hours on his own pet alone go on holiday. People are selfish.

AlleycatMarie · 20/08/2024 19:11

Hi @PrimaryBufferPanel please, please call the RSPCA. No animal lover would dream of leaving their dog like this. It’s so sad and the dog deserves a better life.

Another update because I know people will be worried (which goes some way to restore my faith in human nature).

Since the conversation between neighbour and the one ‘looking after’ the dog, there hasn’t been a peep. Not one sound coming from that flat. I can only surmise as I didn't actually see, but I think either a family member has come to take the dog, or the neighbour calling in to feed her has taken her home. The neighbour who spoke up is a goddess in my eyes because she knows these people far better than I do and was clearly as affected as I was.

On a tangent, but this has also shown to me how different neighbour dynamics and communication can be. I live near these neighbours and yet don’t really know any of them so was very unsure of what to do; but one of their other neighbours (who actually lives next door) was able to raise this diplomatically and it seems to have been resolved.

Again, thank you to everyone who responded. It was so helpful to know that others out there care. Except of course for the POS who went on holiday and left her cat to fend for itself. There’s a special place in hell for you.

Ah this is good news & a great outcome

AlleycatMarie · 20/08/2024 19:17

@DonnaBanana I hope that is some
kind of sick joke. I am absolutely disgusted by this. Why do you have a cat if you don’t care about them? What did you expect them to do for food? Shelter?

I just went away for a week and left my cat outside. Came back he’s happy as Larry. Animals can adapt if you let them after all they come from nature.
Humans come from nature; does that mean it's OK to leave a child outside for a week? After all, it'll adapt, won't it?/s

Pixiedust88 · 20/08/2024 19:27

Call the RSPCA. My inlaws previous neighbours had a German shepherd and it was confined to the garden. Didn’t bother anyone until bonfire night when they went out leaving the dog in the garden chained to a tree underneath a door that had been propped up to shelter it from the rain. Needless to say we walked through the (unlocked and wide open) back gate, took the dog and put it in my FIL’s work van with some food and blankets (we couldn’t take it in the house as they had a dog that wasn’t the most friendly with other dogs). We called the RSPCA and they said they couldn’t come out until the following day so could we keep the dog in the van until they came out

LlynTegid · 20/08/2024 19:32

I am reassured to read that your concern may have led to the dog being kept by the person who was feeding it.

The people who to all intents and purposes abandoned the dog without proper care I wish could be banned from going on holiday, at least abroad, for a period of time.

Well, your cat had reason but feeding a neighbour's cat can be problematic (does anyone remember the picture book Six Dinner Sid?). My DS's cat voted with his paws when a neighbour fed him. Ten years later he turned up at a vet's badly nourished and thin and my exDiL was notified because he was microchipped. Luckily same phone number. Samcat came home to my DS and had 3 happy years with him before passing away this summer. Without doubt, Samcat had had an adventurous life but he was stolen by the neighbours. My DS and ex-DiL did not neglect him and he was the son of my cat, so it was very upsetting when he disappeared and no enquiries could find him.
But your cat was neglected. Who leaves their cat without someone to look after it when they go away? Hope your cat is happy with you and lives long.

This is positively cruel, how did your poor cat eat. When we went away our cat had a microchipped cat flap so can come and go as she pleased. We had someone come into her three times a day as she missed us and I still felt guilty. Shame on you!

helpplease01 · 20/08/2024 19:59

This in Animal cruelty . Call the RSPCA. They should not be allowed to have a dog!! FFS!!!
Corner the person who let it out, tell her you will take it to look after.
Then if you can’t look after tot, take it to the SPCA.
It make me feel sick!

I was just about to ask if anyone had mentioned the ZERO legal rights to enter or take the dog RSPCA.

Haha yeah you often hear how pointless they are, bit like Nspcc for urchins.
I think the dog got moved a few pages ago didnt it but people dont read the updates.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 20/08/2024 20:05

It shouldn't be legal to leave a dog alone overnight. What if there was a fire?!

yup far to hard to click see all.

I really do wonder how so many people think the rspca have actual legal powers.

They are a charity they have no more actual power to take an animal (without the police) than Doris down the road.

The RSPCA is a registered charity (no. 219099) that relies on donations from the public. The RSPCA states that its mission as a charity is, by all lawful means, to prevent cruelty, promote kindness and to alleviate the suffering of animals.”

I mean the dogs more likely to alert the neighbours of an issue than a sleeping person. Then someone could smash the window.

Tho not many empty houses catch fire while someone’s on holiday. Unless maybe the dogs the arsonist. To serve them right for leaving him 😅

Pigwig10 · 20/08/2024 20:10

I cannot understand anyone who does this. We have a dog and 3 cats. When we go away we ensure the dog is looked after by friends of ours, at their homes, and they have doggy friends there too. The cats stay at home, they have a cat flap so can come and go as they please. We have a cat sitting service call twice a day to feed them, give fresh water, clean the litter tray if it’s been used and cuddle/play with the cats. They send us updates of every visit and photos. This is a much better arrangement than a cattery. Only sent them twice. Never, ever, again!!! The cats are happy and chilled when we return, they stank and we’re horribly stressed after the cattery. The dog sulks because he wants to stay with his mate 🤣🤣

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 20/08/2024 20:16

I cannot think of a dog which would not be severely distressed by being alone for so long - we seriously need to up welfare standards in this country. For a social animal, this is horrendous.
