Neighbours on holiday and left dog in house

And the poor bloody animal has been crying and barking for 24 hours. She has the occasional rest but it’s pretty much constant other than that. They have form for this: worst before this recent episode was leaving the poor dog crying for 12 hours straight when they went out one time. That wasn’t the only time but was previously the worst.

They were reported and notified so they know their dog has separation anxiety. Yet this morning in the early hours the entire family fucks off on holiday - must be a holiday as they all had suitcases - and since they left, that poor dog has been crying.

Someone came in for around twenty minutes earlier today to let the dog in the garden and presumably to feed her. But then they fucked off and since then just non stop crying interspersed with barking. it’s honestly NOT annoying me - it’s making me feel so sad for the dog.

Given they had suitcases this has got to be for at least a week, I know the dog will be fed and let out for twenty minutes a day but it’s so clearly in distress! What would you do? Anything?

Can you contact the managing agents of the block?

Other residents are entitled to a bit of peace and quiet, not listening to a distressed dog! Poor thing.

Copperoliverbear · 19/08/2024 06:50

I can't believe you have waited so long, call the rspca the poor thing is highly stressed

Copperoliverbear · 19/08/2024 06:51

Or call the police.

DreamTheMoors · 19/08/2024 06:54

You can certainly call the non-emergency police line.
AND the RSPCA.
AND get in touch with whomever is feeding the poor dog — in fact, you could leave a note on the neighbor’s door with your phone #.
I’d be calling everyone.
Thank Heavens for good people like you, @PrimaryBufferPanel— I hope you’re able to rescue the dog.

MrNarwhal · 19/08/2024 06:54

RSPCA

I work in this field. They will visit, sellotape door and put card through the door to speak to owners. On return the owners will be given an advice notice or warning notice, depending on how severe the situation is assessed, under the animal welfare act.

If no one is feeding they will ask police support to enter property and seize the dog, but if sellotape is clearly broken and someone is feeding the dog then they will look to educate the owners on their return.

I would suggest that you keep a diary of when the dog is visited as evidence.

You can also report the noise to the council as noise disturbance and they will send someone to assess.

autienotnaughty · 19/08/2024 07:09

I'd ring the police say there's a dog alone distressed. Owners have gone on holiday and left it.

ClipTap · 19/08/2024 05:12

Why are you on MN and not calling the RSPCA straightaway

At 4am?

I’m not sure this classes as an emergency.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 19/08/2024 07:09

The dog hasn’t been abandoned though has it. I assume they’ve paid someone to come in and feed the dog and let it out.

babyproblems · 19/08/2024 07:15

I’d call the RSPCA and notify them..
Id also catch the person feeding it and ask them for the owners number and id call and say the dog is barking not at all happy etc and would they mind if it stayed with you…
hopefully they would say yes. You could say the RSPCA have been notified (don’t say by you!!) and this might encourage them to say yes to you… however if they say no then if pursue it with the RSPCA/police as neglect and abandonment. If they say yes it means you have a job on your hands so assuming you wouldn’t mind that.. it’s terrible behaviour from them and is neglectful of the dogs needs. There’s SO many options in the uk for dog care it beggars belief they’ve not bothered to sort anything decent out and neglected the dog in the process.

Call the RSPCA, once ita been abandoned for 24 hours they are able to have the police break in. We had this with a neighbour once, we knew the shory minute a day would make it ‘okay’, so when they has fed the dog we went to the door and restuck the cellotape the RSPCA had put on the front door.

If someone is going in to feed the dog the RSPCA won't do a thing.

My mums neighbour ended up in hospital and someone was going in just to feed her, maybe 5 mins a day, not even let her in the garden and she cried night and day. Rspca just put something on the door and then go back later to see if it's been broken and that's their proof someone is going in.

In the end my mum went to visit the neighbour and asked if she would be OK if her dog stayed with me while she was in hospital (and later with me permanently when the lady passed)

If someone is going in the dog isn't classed as abandoned unfortunately.

Demonhunter · 19/08/2024 07:24

@Simonjt didn't mean to quote you there sorry. Morning sausage fingers.

I’m certain though that everyone can hear that dog crying. In a situation like this you start to think: am I the weird one for finding the dog’s distress distressing if nobody else seemingly gives a shit?

I’m having issues scrolling down so someone may have already suggested this but have you tried recording the dog so you have a record of its distress? Poor thing.

User135644 · 19/08/2024 07:28

Utter scum. Call the RSPCA and have it out with them when they come back. They're total shits.

dawngreen · 19/08/2024 07:39

The rspca can only check if any one is visiting, and if the dog is getting food and water. Unless its in very bad condition skinny or unable to move they cannot do much else by law. I would speak to the person who visits, and offer to look after the dog. Explain the dog is stressed and not settling.

CautiousLurker · 19/08/2024 07:40

OMG. Definitely call the RSCPA.

I am so upset for this unknown dog hat this has made me well up (my last dog had separation anxiety and cried when I did so much as went to the corner shop). Going to snuggle with my two spaniels now (got two so they were never alone) and be grateful we found a lovely in-home boarding service for them so that they were very cared for when we went away recently.

Butterfly43 · 19/08/2024 07:46

Call the RSPCA. There was a horrific story they put on their social media a few months ago where a family left their dog alone when they went to centre parcs, RSPCA were called by a neighbour and the police broke the door down, but the dog was so unwell and couldn't be saved, she'd eaten loads of rubbish from the bin and was severely emaciated. Not saying that would be the same in this case because someone is going in, but 20 minutes is nothing. Fuck people who don't care for their animals properly.

Boomer55 · 19/08/2024 07:57

If the dog is being visited, fed and watered, even once a day, the RSPCA can’t and won’t do a thing.

Cural · 19/08/2024 08:01

I've never found the RSPCA to be of much use, and that's putting it mildly.

Cherrysoup · 19/08/2024 08:02

Cheapskate wankers. Find a proper bloody kennel, get a mate to dog sit. I could no way just dump mine. RSPCA and replace the tape as needed.

We sourced a kennels with very few others, run by the treasurer of the gundog club, huge indoor space with big run outdoors and 2 acres which was stockfenced. Expensive but we considered it part of the holiday cost.

Globules · 19/08/2024 08:06

That poor dog.

Clearly the dog sitter doesn't care much about the animal either, else they'd not be complicit in this. 20 mins a day is nothing.

I'm not saying it's the feeders job to have the dog in their home, but they've agreed with the owners it was ok to only see the dog once a day for 20 mins.

Abuseandptsdsurvivor · 19/08/2024 08:06

RSPCA are REALLY hard to get hold of . We had an issue recently where an animal needed assistance and couldn’t get hold of them till I contacted them saying I wanted to leave a large gift in my will 😂😂😂 managed to speak to an actual person then !!!! Who I told that I needed an issue sorted that day then I’d consider adding them to my will 😂 They did actually attend the same day then.

Ourdearoldqueen · 19/08/2024 08:09

This is so sad. My mum’s neighbour ended up in hospital and even though he had arranged feeders to pop in, poor Charleydog was howling and miserable. Thankfully my mum is a soft touch and soon Charley was happily playing fetch with my nephews, had stewed steak treats and spent his days being petted under his own special blanket.
The neighbour is totally recovered but Charley knows a good thing when he sees it and howls the house down when he sees my mum’s car, so has to come in nightly “for a little bedtime story” or he won’t settle…

AgileGreenSeal · 19/08/2024 08:11

Phone the council- noise pollution.

Blingu · 19/08/2024 08:13

PM the person above. It might be someone like my old dog walker who was forever pinching neglected dogs and rehoming them. The old Alsatian that lived chained in a yard now is found lounging on luxury cushions and is partial to rotisserie chicken. The cockerpoo that was a matted mess who was regularly left over night in the garden with a few manky bowls put down has had quite the glow up and looks like it should be titled. There is a bit of a group of like minded people and there is a horse division too. They buy neglected pets where possible but where it isn’t…

Branleuse · 19/08/2024 08:13

The laws around pet ownership and responsibilities are extremely low bar. The law around noise disturbance might be easier to get somewhere.
Id be extremely tempted to find a way to get the dog out via the community, as i think everyone will be feeling similarly
