Found a dog help!

Posting here for traffic, my sister and I were walking my dog and found a dog that was in the road with no one around we have brought it with us but it has no collar or anything and my dog doesn’t like other dogs so can’t bring it inside until somebody claims her. Have posted a picture on the local Facebook group, is there anything else I can do?

The standard thing is to take it to a vets so they can check chips but FB usually comes up trumps with all the busybodies who are never off it.

LiterallyOnFire · 18/08/2024 20:15

Often there will be someone doggy in the community who has a microchip scanner. FB might be the fastest way to find them. Otherwise call the council dog warden or drop it into a vets to be scanned. The vets will usually call the owner to collect.

noctilucentcloud · 18/08/2024 20:19

I'd wait around 30 mins or so to see if the owner appears on fb or looking for it, but otherwise contact your local dog warden and they'll be able to scan it for a chip and look after it until the owner is found. Otherwise if you don't have a local dog warden, take it to the local police station or vets.

You need to contact the dog warden, by law.

Is that true? We have rescued the sane dog twice now and I've seen a neighbour has also done the same.

Its not the bloody law!

Wahine24 · 18/08/2024 20:46

@FunkyDonkey any luck finding it's owners?

FunkyDonkey · 18/08/2024 20:52

I’ve called the council and they said there’s no dog warden available until tomorrow morning🤦‍♀️ I’ve got no clue what to do now

LOL still not the law.

There's ample opportunity to find the owner yet. All that law is, is to state you can't keep the dog.

HTH

Surely you take it to a vets like the first poster suggested, so they can scan it's chip, isn't that the most logical solution?

FunkyDonkey · 18/08/2024 20:54

The guy at the council basically said my only option is to let it back out if I don’t want to keep it over night, it’s not that I don’t want to but it’s distressing for my dog to have another random dog in the house overnight

Do you have a local shelter you can call for advice or find a local vet with an open premises. Failing that tether it up in your garden!

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 18/08/2024 21:01

Our dog warden is closed Sunday too but we have a 24 hour vets close by and I've taken dogs and rabbits there before. They then organise with the local dog and cat shelter when open for pick up etc. Anything like that near you? Fancy telling someone to just let the dog out again fgs. Can a friend or neighbour or family take it in for the night?

A friend might be a good shout, we have driven to a ‘tip off’ we got on Facebook saying it looks similar to a dog that escaped from there previously so fingers crossed this is it

Wow that's awful. In my area they go straight up to the local animal charity whilst they try and find the owner. If you have a local charity it's worth contacting them along with the vets. If I lost my dog, fb, the police station, the vets and the local charity would be my go toos.

Wahine24 · 18/08/2024 21:08

You should have a late night /24 hour vet in your area who should take in the dog, it's what happens when someone is taken ill to hospital or dies etc and noone can care for the animal.

FunkyDonkey · 18/08/2024 21:08

We found the owner through Facebook! Going to drop it off now🩷 thank you for all of your help

Wahine24 · 18/08/2024 21:09

Hopefully it is the right owner not just a random! You'll know by the dogs reaction

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 18/08/2024 21:12

Great outcome. Well.done
