Turkey wildfire

Posting here for traffic.

On holiday with two small children in Turkey. A wildfire has broken out - there are flames visible in the distance from our hotel, though everything remains calm here. Helicopters are in and out of the sea to take water to the fire.

I’m preparing grab bags with essentials in case we need to evacuate. Has anyone experienced evacuation and have any tips? Did the hotel or tour operator support you? Did you get your insurance involved (I don’t think ours covers us for acts of nature). Stupid me, avoided Greece specifically because of the fires 🙄.

It's common in Cyprus. The royal air force helicopters often put them out. How close is it? Do you have forests/trees/brush etc leading up to wear you are?

@Whammyammy yes it’s vegetation leading to the hotel. We can’t tell but probably 20 miles.

Write your name and phone number on your children's arms if you do have to evacuate. Tie something round adult and child's wrist. It may be chaotic if there's panic. Hopefully it won't come to that.

we now realise, from news reports, fires are around 6 miles away.

@heldinadream anxious but fine. It does sound close! Can’t see the smoke as it’s dark and the smell is no worse. Watching twitter intently and have grab bags at the door.

@heldinadream yes it has thank you. The fire very close has been extinguished. The fire near the airport is still going but no reports of flights or roads being impacted. Hopefully we’ll get off home ok tomorrow.

Fantastic. Glad you're OK. These fires are not going to get much better anytime soon.
I feel desperately sorry for anyone caught in a wildfire.
