To think having an indoor cat is cruel?

I was looking after my mother’s cat last week - feeding him while she was on holiday and changing the litter tray - and I felt so incredibly sorry for the cat. It’s not the first time I’ve looked after him for her, and not the first time I’ve thought that.

What a shit life for the cat.

Of course I don’t like the idea of cats killing wildlife out there, but to be a prisoner indoors 100% of the time your whole life?!

Of course I was nothing but lovely to my mother and took good care of the cat. My mother doesn’t let him out because she fears he’ll get stolen or run over. She lives on a quiet and safe street, so I don’t think anyone will want to steal him. At this point, I also think he wouldn’t have a clue how to kill a bird.

I’m nowhere near “concerned”. You’re slightly nuts if you’re now comparing cats to basket balls. Baffling

Our last cat was 20+ when he died. He lived most of his life outdoors and as he got older and slower, he preferred to be indoors. I have never known a cat to fight for life as tenaciously as he did! He loved his life with us.

Why do you hate cats so much?!!! You might consider therapy? That attitude is not healthy. I don't know how you can hate one species of creature so intensely and like others. It's not rational.

I'm allergic to cats. I've got three, two of them long-haired. I will never be without a cat.

I’ve had no faith in self styled ‘cat specialists’ since the last one I met told me my cat was deeply unhappy because we were calling her Betty, but the cat had told her she should have been named Dorothy 😂.

I do. They never showed any signs of predatory behaviour. It just wasn't their nature.

I grew up in a very rural area but still lost cats to the roads. When I got my first two cats when we got married and bought our house, we kept them indoors. One lived until just short of 17, the other just over. We always said we had two planned and two 'accidents' lol - the 3rd cat was a stray who moved in and the 4th was left behind by his bastard owners when they moved house and left him behind. #3 was run over by a car but survived, and #4 was the one that died from FIV.

The old boy lived a lot of his life outside. He used to regularly wake me up during the night when he was fighting. Yes, it was always him!!

The thing is, I have done… and am doing…. absolutely nothing 🙂 just living my life and sadly suffering the consequences of other peoples lack of care and responsibility. Definitely not me doing anything wrong to anyone at all. Just fed up of those who do.

I have seen a cat that been hit by a car but as in the uk not attacked by a raccoon

I’ve heard on occasion dogs attacking cats but cats tend to make other animals fearful of them even when my cat was old and frail he would chase foxes away

there are dangers in the world you can’t protect pets from all dangers and they should be allowed access to the outside unless they are poorly themselves and have a real need to be kept indoors

it’s cruel and absolutely against their nature to be kept enclosed indoors

I haven’t had a cat for years, but the neighbourhood cats are always walking along the walls, climbing things, sunning themselves in my garden etc. They are pets, but still have a full and free life, that is how a cat should be IMO.

1. @Dreamskies is perfectly reasonable and anyone who lets their cat out is a 'selfish bastard' or 'an outdoor cat nutter'
2. @grapesstrawberriesplease Knows more about cats than anyone else in the whole world, including my vet (who actually has some real qualifications) and many cat charities. Presumably this is because she has a certificate and therefore I am not worthy of an opinion
3. I have discovered that I am an utterly selfish bastard who knows nothing about cats, presumably because I have the temerity to disagree with these two fonts of wisdom, oh, and also I would be the worst neighbour in the world

Well since you two have both been insulting to me throughout this thread I asked one of my cats what she thought about randos on the Internet telling her to stay inside.
She responded
'fuck that idea you stupid twats'
Please note - she is outside 🙀. She hasn't caught fire, been run over by a number 22 bus, been fed poison by an arsehole, she also hasn't been swept away by a passing golden eagle or used as fox cub food by a cunning little vixen. She hasn't even wiped out any bird species yet this evening or murdered anyone's house pet.
