To think having an indoor cat is cruel?

Catnope · 16/08/2024 14:31

I was looking after my mother’s cat last week - feeding him while she was on holiday and changing the litter tray - and I felt so incredibly sorry for the cat. It’s not the first time I’ve looked after him for her, and not the first time I’ve thought that.

What a shit life for the cat.

Of course I don’t like the idea of cats killing wildlife out there, but to be a prisoner indoors 100% of the time your whole life?!

It’s cruel. Right?! Just me?

Of course I was nothing but lovely to my mother and took good care of the cat. My mother doesn’t let him out because she fears he’ll get stolen or run over. She lives on a quiet and safe street, so I don’t think anyone will want to steal him. At this point, I also think he wouldn’t have a clue how to kill a bird.

Well you're keeping it well hidden.

So are most of the owners on here 🤣😂

check out @grapesstrawberriesplease post - she seems like she has genuine knowledge and a factual and balanced view tbh.

Yeah, we're so awful we spent thousands on him at the vets, kept four other cats (over the years) happily indoor, spent even more money on cat-proofing our garden, rushed him to the vets at midnight on NYE and then followed professional advice to let him outside - yeah, we're really awful 🙄

Respectfully, do shut up. You have no idea what you're talking about.

My 12+ years of training and experience means I know exactly what I’m talking about thank you 😘

What pet of dreamskies did this local cat kill?

What relevance does this have? As per a previous poster, you’ll no doubt want to judge whether a cat is somehow “more valuable”. Newsflash - it isn’t.

Well, considering you've never met me or my cat, nor do you know anything about his health or behaviour, I'm going listen to the professionals (with over 40 years experience) who actually know him instead - funny that 🙄

Amberpants · 18/08/2024 18:31

We have 3 cats, only one goes out. They are all happy 😊

Maybe its irresponsible to let whatever pet it is roam around when there are predators about, be that cats or foxes or birds of pray etc.

It happened inside, not even out in my garden, but yeah, you keep reaching and trying to justify why I should have to suffer your pet on my property ☺️

Maybe you should shut your door then! Cats are going to roam! Dont like it then fit an ultrasonic detector, water sprinklers or move somewhere remote.

All the cats round here seem to have a lovely time of it outside.

Don’t be so ridiculous, I shouldn’t have to keep my doors closed and fail to enjoy my property just because you’re selfish. Nor should I have to spend money on things that don’t even work. Pet owners should take responsibility, or not have pets. They don’t deserve them.

You must live in the back of beyond then.

I've had cats in my life for 60 years - in a rural setting as a child, and an urban setting as an adult.

Off the top of my head, I've had 6+ cats killed by cars. I've had a 6 month old kitten killed by a predatory stray full tom. He literally just tore into her throat. I'd a couple hit by cars that survived. I've had several that just disappeared.

I had a ginger boy who was a fighter even though he was neutered. He was with the vet regularly, and he was limited to getting out when we were at home, and wasn't allowed out overnight. He contracted FIV and died of kidney failure when he was 10.

AFAIK I've not had one poisoned but then I had some that I never found out what befell them. A neighbour a few doors up had her cat poisoned - she was a regular in our garden.

I haven't had a neighbour complain but I know Brian up the street used to chase my last old boy with a broom when he shat in his garden. Clever boy, didn't shit at home lol - until he got a litter tray in the house and then he would come in from outside to use it!!

Bloody hell you have had bad luck.

We don’t live in the middle of nowhere- but at the back we have a backyard then a lane where the only vehicle is the bin lorry once a week, then sort of common land- cats can roam a long way without coming to a fast/busy/real road.

My current ones can’t be arsed to leave the yard though.

MissConductUS · 18/08/2024 18:39

Our indoor cats have a second-story deck that overlooks the woods. If the weather is good, they love it out there.

Those woods contain coyotes, who will kill a cat for the sport of it. They wouldn't survive a month as outdoor cats, so I think the status quo is best for them.

About not finding dogs in our gardens or something? Made no sense.

You’re a very pointlessly angry person

It didn’t seem relevant that’s all, of course we don’t find dogs in our gardens because we expect pet owners to take responsibility for their pets actions. It confused me because you were proving my point!

But sure, if it was a joke attempt then no worries.

That poster apparently was trained by a cat charity to think cats shouldn’t go out, yet that charity gives out a lot of advice on the benefits to cats of roaming outside… something odd there.

Ah, sorry. Yes, my suffering is “pointless”. I’ll remember that in future. I’d best let whoever it was that gets irate about their neighbours basketball noise know that they’re not to be angry anymore either. It’s not illegal to play basketball after all. Thanks for being so concerned ☺️

Back to my point of cats not being a suitable pet for the 21st century 🙂

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 18/08/2024 18:48

The problem is in some peoples' minds cat owners can't do anything right.

When we put up the cat proof netting our neighbour came round wanting to know what the netting was she could see on the top of the fence (our fence) and rolled her eyes when DH told her what it was for. I was glad we did have it as they went on to get a yappy little dog and I wouldn't have wanted my cat to be at risk from it.

Well, quite Grin

I mean, maybe I'm a bit odd, but I'm going to trust my vet who has over 40 years experience and who actually knows my cat over some random stranger on the internet, lol.

Theyre just on the wind up! Cats are a great pet for busy people. Amuse themselves, kill mice, have an occasional itch, a few dreamies then a poop in next doors flower bed. Low maintenance.

Canthave2manycats · 18/08/2024 18:52

Dreamskies · 18/08/2024 10:48

Great point 🤣

I particularly like the “no complaints about my cat” - two main reasons for that:

  1. how the fuck are we supposed to know who owns the cat seeing as it’s out unsupervised?
  2. we know (as shown by this thread) that outdoor cat owners are too selfish to care about anyone else, they have no qualms in letting cats impact other people because “it’s legal” 🙄 so no point in attempting to track down an owner

I know who all the cats in our street belong to, bar one. I welcome them to my garden, because I love cats. I seldom see any crap in my garden, and what harm if they do! We've a big floofy boy who lives in the next street who calls regularly. He's a big sweetheart. I don't understand how people can hate cats. They're missing out.

Dog and cats are not comparable. They are different types of animals. Cats need their freedom. You’ll have to suck it up

And that’s relevant because?…. there’s a number of cats round here and they could live god knows where. The point is that not having heard a complaint means nothing.

I regularly have shit in my garden, to the point I’m now about to tear out the flower beds as I can no longer bring myself to garden, and fed up of the stench and maggot ridden shit from the pets of lazy, irresponsible owners. They even do it on the drive, it’s been walked into the house before. Yet you’d all go mad if someone left a dog turd outside your house. Hypocrisy at its finest.

And they can have it - whilst being supervised by a responsible owner.
